Putin arrives in Beijing for summit talks with Xi

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in China for a two-day official visit. It's his first trip abroad since he began his fifth term in office.

The presidential plane carrying Putin landed in Beijing early Thursday morning. He was welcomed by Chinese officials as he stepped off the boarding ramp.

Russia's presidential office says Putin will hold summit talks with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in the capital on Thursday, and the two leaders will sign joint documents.

Putin's delegation includes Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, new Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, a string of deputy prime ministers and heads of state-owned enterprises. They are expected to take part in an expanded meeting.

In a written interview with China's state-run Xinhua news agency published on Wednesday, Putin said Russia-China relations have reached the highest level ever. He stressed that Russia will strengthen its ties with China in various sectors, including the economy.

Presidential aide Yury Ushakov praised China for not participating in an international conference to be hosted by Switzerland next month. The gathering aims to build on a peace plan advocated by Ukraine. Ushakov said Russia appreciates the "wise, balanced position" of its Chinese partners.

The aide also said Putin and Xi will discuss the situation in Ukraine.

Observers say Putin aims to gain China's understanding for Russia's stance in the Ukrainian situation while confirming solidarity between the two sides as they step up their confrontational stance against Western powers.

Reports quoted Xi as saying that steady development of bilateral relations is not only in the fundamental interests of the two countries, but is also conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity of the region and the world.

New Singapore PM sworn in to replace outgoing Lee

Singapore's long-serving prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, has stepped down and has been replaced by the deputy leader, Lawrence Wong.

Wong was sworn in on Wednesday. In his inauguration speech, he stressed that a generational shift has taken place, saying that his leadership style will differ from that of previous generations.

Wong highlighted diplomatic and domestic issues faced by the government, including worsening US-China relations and the rapidly aging Singaporean population. He called for national unity as he asked his fellow Singaporeans to join him and his team and their journey forward.

The new prime minister, a former bureaucrat, is 51 and grew up in a middle-class family.

He captured the spotlight as co-chair of the COVID-19 task force. Wong was named deputy prime minister in 2022.

He succeeded Lee, the eldest son of the first prime minister and the country's late founding father, Lee Kuan Yew. His high profile and leadership helped him remain in power for almost two decades.

The outgoing prime minister will serve in Wong's cabinet as senior minister.

Wong's inauguration comes as Singapore faces growing domestic and international challenges. Attention is focused on how Wong will lead the country amid a declining birth rate and US-China tensions.

UN sanctions monitors suspect N.Korea stole 3.6 billion dollars in cyberattacks

UN sanctions monitors suspect North Korea was behind 97 cyberattacks involving the theft of 3.6 billion dollars' worth of cryptocurrency between 2017 and April 2024.

The monitors were members of a Security Council expert panel overseeing the enforcement of sanctions on North Korea. The panel was disbanded at the end of April after Russia vetoed the renewal of its mandate.

UN diplomatic sources say some of the monitors submitted their unfinished work to the Security Council's North Korea sanctions committee on Friday.

In their report, the monitors allege that North Korea stole cryptocurrency worth 147.5 million dollars from an exchange and laundered it in March using a crypto mixer service.

A mixer service mashes up cryptocurrencies of many users together to obscure the origin and ownership of the funds.

The report says the stolen money is being used to fund North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs.

It is feared the disbanding of the expert panel will weaken the UN's ability to monitor North Korea's violations of sanctions.

Man referred to prosecution for electronic cheating on university entrance exam

Tokyo police have sent papers to prosecutors on a man who allegedly used camera-equipped smart glasses to cheat on an entrance exam at Waseda University.

The 18-year-old was a high school senior when the alleged cheating took place in February of this year.

Police say the man took photos of question sheets during a chemistry test for the private university's School of Creative Science and Engineering.

He then sent the images via smartphone to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and solicited answers.

He could be charged with obstructing the university's operations.

The man allegedly searched on X about one week before the exam for people who might be able to solve tough questions.

He sent them messages asking them to be his online tutor, with suggestions of payment.

On the day of the exam, he sent them images without telling them the questions were from an entrance exam.

The man wrote the answers he received on the test sheet.

But one person he contacted notified the university.

When the man showed up at a later date to take an exam for another faculty, the university staff confirmed there was a camera attached to his glasses. His exam results were invalidated.

The man paid several thousand yen, or a few dozen dollars, to those who sent answers, but the police believe those people were not aware of any wrongdoing.

The man is believed to have cheated on tests other than chemistry.

He has reportedly told investigators he was worried because he had done poorly on standardized entrance examinations and was rejected by his preferred national university. He said he wants to apologize to Waseda University and the people he got involved.

Japan's Gifu City recreates 16th century castle with metaverse

The city of Gifu in central Japan is using the metaverse to allow people to virtually visit part of Gifu Castle during the era of the 16th century warlord Oda Nobunaga.

The city launched the service late last month. It is available on its website and the online game Fortnite.

The website recreates Nobunaga's residence and garden, which was located at the foot of a mountain in what is now Gifu Park.

Visitors can compare the virtual castle with the present-day landscape by scanning QR codes with their smartphones.

An online game is available free of charge for registered users. They can take a stroll inside the residence, or talk with characters to get more information.

Officials plan to virtually reproduce the entire castle, including its tower and the view of the surrounding houses, from next April.

They say they hope to attract tourists by promoting the castle to the world through the metaverse.
