Iran mourns President Raisi's death

Memorial ceremonies for Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi and other passengers killed in a helicopter crash have been held across the country.

All eight people aboard a helicopter that went down in the northwestern Iranian province of East Azerbaijan on Sunday were killed, including Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

Authorities are working to retrieve passengers' bodies and determine the cause of the crash, which state-run media has attributed to bad weather.

Mourners packed into the venues of memorial services held in Tehran and other parts of the country on Monday.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning.

Funerals are planned in locations including Mashhad, a northeastern Iranian city where Raisi came from.

Officials said First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as interim president for the time being. Elections for a new president will be held on June 28.

It remains to be seen how changes to the government lineup will affect the country's diplomatic policy in the Middle East. Iran backs Hamas militants, who are fighting Israel in Gaza.

ICC prosecutor seeking Israeli and Hamas leaders' arrests

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court says people on both sides of the conflict in Gaza "bear criminal responsibility" for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Karim Khan is requesting arrest warrants for five men, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas' leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar .

Khan issued a statement on Monday from the court in The Hague, saying Israeli leaders are using starvation as a "method of warfare" and "intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population." Khan has also applied for an arrest warrant for Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Khan wrote that Hamas leaders Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and Mohammad Deif "planned and instigated" the attacks in October 7 on Israeli villages. He wrote that they are responsible for the killing of hundreds of citizens and the taking of at least 245 hostages. "We underline in the clearest possible fashion that international law and the laws of armed conflict apply to everyone," he said. "No foot soldier, no commander, no civilian leader - no one - can act with impunity."

Netanyahu labeled Khan's announcement a "disgrace."
He said comparing Israel and the "henchmen of Hamas" is a "travesty of justice."

Hamas officials released a statement saying they "strongly" denounce Khan's attempt to equate the "victim" with the "executioner." They demanded that he cancel all arrest warrants for their leaders.

A panel of judges will determine whether the evidence supports the issuing of warrants, a process that can take months.

Mount Fuji climbing reservations open amid overcrowding

When it comes to Japan's top tourist destinations, Mount Fuji towers over many. The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site was visited by about 220,000 climbers last year, but concerns about "overtourism" have led local authorities to put a cap on how many people are allowed to walk its most popular trail.

US: Israel briefs security advisor about 'alternative' operations in Rafah

The White House says that Israeli military officials informed US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan about alternatives to a large-scale ground operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

The White House said in a statement on Monday that Sullivan met with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Chief of Defense Herzi Halevi and other military leaders in Israel.

It says Gallant and Halevi briefed Sullivan on "new alternative approaches to defeating Hamas in Rafah" to address US concerns.

Details of any alternative approaches have not been disclosed, but the White House says the two sides have agreed to continue discussions.

Sullivan is said to have reiterated concerns about a major operation in Rafah, which currently houses many evacuees.

Gallant, meanwhile, has emphasized on social media that Israel has a duty to expand the ground operation in Rafah to destroy Hamas and bring hostages home.

As Israel is poised to dispatch more troops and step up its offensive, attention is focused on whether the US pressure will be successful in halting a large operation.

Ukraine to participate in 2024 Paris Olympics

Ukraine says it has decided to take part in the upcoming summer Olympic Games in Paris. Following the International Olympic Committee's decision to let some athletes from Russia and Belarus participate as "neutrals," Ukraine had hinted it might boycott the Games.

In a statement on Monday, the country's Youth and Sports Ministry and Olympic Committee announced the decision to participate in the Games, which open on July 26.

The statement said participating in the Games is an opportunity for Ukraine to demonstrate its strong will and spirits. It said Ukrainian athletes performing under the national flag is a manifestation of willpower. It added that Ukraine's slogan for the Olympic Games is "The Will to Win."

About 100 Ukrainian athletes have reportedly qualified for the Games.

The Ukrainian government said at least 450 of the country's athletes and coaches have been killed and more than 500 training and other sports-related facilities damaged since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The IOC said last year that athletes with Russian and Belarusian passports who actively support Russia's war on Ukraine, or are contracted to the Russian or Belarusian military and national security agencies, are not eligible to participate in the Games. It added that those who are eligible will compete as "Individual Neutral Athletes."

Ukraine's government and the country's Olympic Committee say they continue to oppose the IOC decision.

Viral scene of Mt. Fuji over convenience store blocked off

A view of Japan's famous Mount Fuji appearing to perch on a convenience store roof in Yamanashi Prefecture has been blocked after it drew global attention for tourists flocking to the area to take photos.

Mount Fuji, when viewed at a certain angle from across the street, looked like it sat neatly on the store's roof. The scene became wildly popular on social media.

Workers on Tuesday finished setting up a large curtain to cover the view in a bid to keep away camera-toting tourists in the town of Fujikawaguchiko. Locals complained they had been trespassing and disrupting traffic.

One resident said, " The screen damages the landscape, so it's a shame they had to set it up. I hope many people will come here and practice good manners."

Newly identified specimen of extinct Japanese wolf on display in Tokyo

A newly identified specimen of an extinct Japanese wolf made its public debut in Tokyo on Tuesday. A schoolgirl helped initially identify the mounted specimen.

The wolf is now on display as part of a special exhibition titled "Mammals3 - The Parade of Life" at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo's Ueno district. It had been in the museum's collection wrongly labeled as the skin of a kind of yamainu, or wild dog.

Second-year Tokyo junior high school student Komori Hinako joined experts and concluded in a report released in February that the specimen is likely to be a Japanese wolf that was kept at Ueno Zoo more than a century ago.

The team began studying it after Komori saw it in 2020 and wondered whether it was actually a Japanese wolf she had seen in books.

The museum said the specimen is the fourth example of the extinct animal in Japan. The other three are at the same facility, the University of Tokyo, and Wakayama University.

Kawada Shin-ichiro of the museum's department of zoology is on the research team. He said the specimen is important for exploring the features of the extinct species. He expressed the hope that visitors to the exhibition can feel its value for future research, despite it being more than 100 years old and a little worn.

Komori said she is glad that the specimen is on display, adding that she feels it looks cute.

The exhibition will run through June 16.

Hotter-than-usual summer forecast across Japan

Japan's weather officials say it will be hotter than usual across the country from June through August.

The Meteorological Agency announced a three-month forecast on Tuesday.

The agency predicts a hot summer due to warm and humid air flowing in Japan from the edge of a high pressure system in the Pacific. It adds that the ending of the El Nino phenomenon will strengthen the high pressure system.

Forecasters say that in June and July, temperatures will be normal or high in northern Japan. They expect high temperatures in eastern and western Japan and in the Okinawa and Amami regions. In August, temperatures will be high across the country.

The agency expects rainfall to be near-normal during the three months in northern and eastern Japan, and usual or more than usual in western Japan as well as the Okinawa and Amami regions.

It says that in June, Okinawa and Amami, as well as the Pacific side of western Japan, will have normal or above-normal rainfall. The agency says the rainy season appears to have started in Okinawa and Amami on Tuesday.

In July, weather officials expect similar trends for western Japan and the Pacific coast of eastern Japan.

For other areas, the agency says there will be normal rainfall for June and July.

In August, it expects near-normal rainfall nationwide.

Officials warn of very high temperatures in August if a La Nina pattern takes place. La Nina refers to lower-than-usual sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean off Peru.

Agency official Tanaka Shotaro says there is a 50 percent chance of La Nina occurring this summer, and the degree of heat will depend on conditions in the tropical zone.

He called on people to take precautions for heatstroke and heavy rain.
