Georgian President vetoes 'foreign influence' law

Georgia's president has vetoed a draft law which would regulate organizations that receive foreign funding.

President Salome Zourabichvili called the law, "Russian in its essence and spirit" in a televised speech on Saturday. She added that it contradicts Georgia's constitution.

The law would require non-government organizations and media outlets receiving more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence.

The parliament passed the draft law on Tuesday amid massive protests.

Those who are against the law are saying that it is designed to limit the activities of organizations and media which the government finds unfavorable.

The ruling party which supports the law has enough votes to override the veto when it is returned to parliament.

Georgia has applied to join the European Union.

Posting to a social media on Saturday, President of the European Council Charles Michel said that the law is not in line with EU values.

He called on Georgian politicians to ensure the country "stays on the European course the population supports."

Zelenskyy on alert after another village in Kharkiv falls to Russia

Russia's defense ministry says its forces have taken control of another village in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv.

Saturday's announcement brings the number of villages in the region under Russia's control to 13. The ministry earlier said they had seized 12 villages during the week through Friday.

Russian forces have been intensifying their offensive in the northern Kharkiv region since crossing the border earlier this month.

About 10,000 people in Kharkiv are said to have fled from communities bordering Russia.

The governor of Kharkiv says Russian attacks on a residential district in the region on Saturday injured five people, including children.

In an interview with the AFP news agency on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the recent rounds of Russian attacks on Kharkiv "the first wave."

During the interview, Zelenskyy rejected a call by French President Emmanuel Macron for a truce with Russia during the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

He said Russia would use any suspension of hostilities to further its military advantage. He asked, who can guarantee that Russia will not use the pause to send more forces into Ukraine. Zelenskyy said his country opposes any truce that plays into the hands of the enemy.

Video footage from the disaster zone shows muddy floodwater inundating roads and shops filled with merchandise were covered in mud.

Local media say more rain is expected on Sunday in Ghor and 15 other provinces, raising concerns about further damage.

Just over a week ago, Baghlan and other provinces in the north were also hit by floods.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said those floods killed 180 people.

Governor Oishi Kengo said in a letter sent to US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel on Saturday that the test would further accelerate the nuclear arms race.

He called on the US to do away with all tests that contribute to maintaining or developing nuclear weapons.

The mayor of Nagasaki City has also sent a letter of protest to Biden and Emanuel, saying the testing can never be permissible.

He said that it tramples on the wishes of atomic bomb survivors and others who hope for peace.

Traditional samurai procession takes place in Nikko

About 1,200 people clad in samurai or other period costumes took part in a parade on Saturday at the Nikko Toshogu Shrine in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo.

The parade, known as Hyakumonozoroi Sennin Musha Gyoretsu, is held every spring and autumn to reenact the procession that transferred the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that ruled over Japan from 17th to the late 19th century.

The participants walked down a street for about 1 kilometer. The tail end of the procession featured three portable shrines, each weighing more than 800 kilograms and carried by about 50 people. The shrines honor Tokugawa Ieyasu and two other warlords.

The parade took place on a large scale for the first time in five years. The event had been cancelled or scaled down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tourists flocked along the parade route to watch the spectacular procession.

One participant dressed as samurai said the armor was heavier than he had imagined. He added he felt solemn.

A woman said she comes to watch the event every year, and the latest procession was more impressive than last year as she was able to see more portable shrines.
