US conducts 3rd subcritical nuclear test under Biden

The United States has conducted its third subcritical nuclear test under the administration of President Joe Biden.

The US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration says the test took place on Tuesday in the western state of Nevada.

The NNSA said it relies on subcritical tests to support the safety and effectiveness of nuclear warheads.

The US government announced a moratorium on tests involving nuclear explosions in 1992. But successive administrations have continued subcritical tests.

The previous subcritical test took place in September 2021.

The US has not ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, but an NNSA official said the 33 previous subcritical experiments and the latest experiment were consistent with the stipulated zero-yield standard.

A senior official of the NNSA said, "We plan to increase the frequency of these subcritical experiments so we can continue to gather important data on nuclear weapons materials, with no technical need for a return to underground nuclear explosive testing."

Gun attack kills 4 in Afghanistan, including 3 foreign tourists

The Taliban say a gun attack in central Afghanistan has killed four people, including three foreign tourists, and wounded some others.

European and US media outlets say the three foreign victims are Spanish tourists.

The shooting took place on Friday in a shopping area in Bamiyan province, known for its Buddhist heritage registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The Taliban interim government says four people have been detained for alleged involvement in the case.

Foreign tourists have been visiting Afghanistan as the country's security situation is improving. The Taliban have intensified crackdowns on extremists since they retook power three years ago.

N.Korea says it conducted tactical ballistic missile test

North Korea has announced it conducted on Friday a tactical ballistic missile test that features a new autonomous navigation system.

The state-run Korean Central Television said on Saturday that the country's Missile Administration carried out the test-launch in waters off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. The report said North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw it. A released photo shows a missile reportedly striking its target.

North Korea has been developing tactical ballistic missiles, which the North says are designed to carry nuclear warheads. Observers say the missiles could be used in potential attacks on South Korean and US military bases in South Korea.

On Friday, Kim said North Korea's enemies would be afraid of playing with fire when they witness its "nuclear combat posture." He made the remark when he visited a defense industrial complex. He also stressed the need to accelerate activities for bolstering the country's "nuclear force."

The South Korean military said North Korea launched what appeared to be multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward waters off the eastern coast on Friday afternoon.

US to send national security advisor to Israel to discuss operations in Rafah

The White House says its National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will travel to Israel to discuss military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Friday that Sullivan will visit Israel on Sunday to hold talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some other senior officials.

Kirby said Sullivan is going to raise the issue of Israel's offensive against Hamas in Rafah. He said the talks will be about "going after that terrorist capability in Rafah in a way that's targeted, precise and, quite frankly, effective."

He said the US government does not believe that "the way to do it is to smash into Rafah with a large body of armed forces on the ground in an indiscriminate and reckless manner."

Kirby suggested that Sullivan will try to dissuade Israel from staging a massive ground operation in Rafah.

Kirby added that the US has been assured that Israel is willing to continue to talk with Washington before making any major decisions.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Thursday that additional troops will be sent to Rafah, where a large number of Palestinians, many from other parts of Gaza, are taking refuge.

Aid to Gaza arrives via US-made pier

White House officials say a floating pier in central Gaza made by the US is being used to offload humanitarian aid arriving by ship. White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby confirmed the details on Friday in a news conference.

US President Joe Biden had ordered the creation of the pier to provide a pathway for aid. Kirby said that once the supplies reach Gaza, they will be distributed by the United Nations to people in need.

About 1,000 US soldiers are involved in the operation, although none of them have entered Gaza. They are aiming to supply about 90 truckloads per day at first and, soon, scale that up to 150.

However, UN officials say at least 500 trucks are needed each day.

The spokesperson for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said he welcomes "any and all aid." However, Jens Laerke added that the pier is not enough. He said land routes are "the most viable, effective and efficient" aid delivery method, and all crossing points need to be opened.

Aid workers say land access is the best way to stave off famine, but they add that nothing has come through Rafah crossing since about two weeks ago, when Israeli forces began their offensive in the area.

They also say very little is getting in through another crossing at Kerem Shalom, even though the Israelis say they have allowed fuel supplies in.

Tragic history of Crimean Tatars on display in Kyiv

An exhibition to remember the tragic history of Crimean Tatars, an ethnic group indigenous to southern Ukraine, is underway in Kyiv.

Saturday marks exactly 80 years since the Soviet administration of Joseph Stalin began the deportation of the entire ethnic group to central Asia from its native land.

Reporters were invited to view the exhibition on Friday.

The Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Tamila Tasheva, said the event is designed to convey the pains endured by the Crimean Tatars over centuries.

The exhibits include paintings and illustrations drawn by Crimean Tatar artists that depict the plight of their people.

Such items as clothes, hats and tableware used in the 19th century are also on display.

Many Crimean Tatars returned to Crimea at around the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, those people have had to suffer oppression following Russia's unilateral annexation of Crimea 10 years ago.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which started two years ago, has reportedly forced many members of the group to leave the region out of fears of being drafted into the Russian military.

Organizers of the exhibition say they hope to draw the attention of a wide audience to the tragic past of the Crimean Tatar people.

The exhibition will run through June 26.
