Solomon Islands picks new prime minister, likely to keep close ties with China

Lawmakers in Solomon Islands have selected foreign affairs and trade minister Jeremiah Manele as the South Pacific nation's new prime minister. The move indicates Solomon Islands will likely maintain close ties with China.

The lawmakers voted on Thursday to choose the successor to Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, whose government has deepened relations with China.

In 2019, Solomon Islands cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and established relations with China. The island nation signed a security treaty with Beijing three years later.

Sogavare announced on Monday that he would not seek another term as prime minister after the governing party lost a number of seats in the April 17 general election, although it secured more than any other party.

Manele said after Thursday's vote that his country continues on the recovery path after the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges. He added, "It is not an easy task but we will be reaching out to all relevant stakeholders as we progress on a road to recovery."

In November last year, Manele told NHK he is aware that major powers such as the United States and China are interested in his country in terms of security.

But Manele noted that economic and other support from China is important, saying Solomon Islands is a small country and its main interest is development. His remarks suggested there would be no change in the island nation's pro-Beijing stance.

Kishida in France to address OECD Ministerial Council as chair country leader

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio arrived in France on Wednesday.

He will attend on Thursday a meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which Japan chairs this year.

In a speech he plans to deliver during the talks, Kishida is to explain Japan's efforts to promote what he calls a "new form of capitalism." The prime minister will stress the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and fair economic order.

Kishida also intends to announce Japan's commitment to tackling global issues, including the use of generative artificial intelligence and climate change.

In particular, Kishida is to disclose plans to establish an international framework to discuss creating rules for governing AI. He also plans to announce support for the practical use of technology to provide information on those placing articles and advertisements on the internet as a measure against fake information.

Kishida also will express his intention to strengthen cooperation with Southeast Asian countries.

In France, Kishida will hold talks with President Emmanuel Macron at a working lunch to discuss their response to China, which continues to ramp up its maritime activities, among other issues.

The two will likely confirm cooperation in the security and economic fields as well as the promotion of human exchanges.

Kishida, Macron agree to begin talks on security cooperation deal

The leaders of Japan and France have agreed to open talks on a deal to smooth preparations for joint exercises between Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the French military.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio met French President Emmanuel Macron over lunch at the presidential palace in Paris on Thursday.

The leaders discussed holding bilateral talks to prepare for a possible Reciprocal Access Agreement.

Their meeting comes amid China's growing maritime activity in the Asia-Pacific. Analysts say France is seeking to reinforce security cooperation with Japan in the region in light of its overseas territories in the South Pacific, including New Caledonia.

Kishida and Macron also agreed to maintain close collaboration on other issues, such as North Korea as well as the situations in the Middle East and Ukraine.

The leaders expressed hope that exchanges between young people and others will increase through this year's Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, next year's World Exposition in Osaka and other occasions.

After completing a series of outings in France, Kishida departed for Brazil. He will also visit Paraguay before returning to Japan.

Record heat scorches Philippines

A record-breaking heatwave in the Philippines has raised the risk of power outages and triggered school closures.

The high in the capital Manila reached 38.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The same day, the temperature hit 40.3 degrees in the nearby province of Tarlac.

The metro Manila power utility is calling on people to save electricity as a surge in air conditioner usage is threatening to overload the grid.

The department of education has ordered all public schools to suspend classes and switch to home-study or online classes for two days.

The country's north and central regions have seen little rainfall, raising concerns about agricultural produce.

The scorching heat is believed to have been brought on by the El Nino phenomenon. Weather authorities say it will last until June and are urging people to be careful.
