Japan Prime Minister Kishida to visit Seoul for 3-way summit with China, S.Korea

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio departs for Seoul on Sunday to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. It will be the first summit of the three countries' leaders in four and a half years. Arrangements are also underway to realize a bilateral meeting between Kishida and Li.

The three leaders will hold the summit in the South Korean capital on Monday. They appear likely to confirm the further facilitation of human exchanges through intercollegiate interactions and tourism. They may also designate 2025 and 2026 as years of cultural exchanges.

The leaders are expected to compile a joint declaration that summarizes their talks, such as cooperation in the economic and trade sectors.

Ahead of the summit, Kishida is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Yoon on Sunday. They will likely agree to have closer communications between their leaders and ministers.

The two leaders are also expected to seek enhanced collaboration in dealing with North Korea, which has been stepping up its nuclear and missile development.

Kishida is also arranging a bilateral meeting with Li. The Japanese prime minister appears eager to reaffirm their intention to promote a "mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests."

Kishida will likely seek an immediate removal of China's suspension of Japanese seafood imports, and outline his government's positions on other outstanding bilateral issues.

Kishida is also expected to call on China to peacefully resolve issues related to Taiwan through dialogue. China began military drills around Taiwan on Thursday.

G7 finance chiefs express concerns about China's industrial overcapacity

The finance chiefs and central bank governors of the Group of Seven countries have expressed concerns about China's industrial overcapacity.

Beijing is being accused of overproducing electric vehicles and other products to sell them overseas at unfairly low prices.

The G7 officials released a joint communique after wrapping up two days of talks in Stresa, northern Italy, on Saturday.

The statement says, "We express concerns about China's comprehensive use of non-market policies and practices that undermines our workers, industries, and economic resilience."

The statement further says that the officials will "consider taking steps to ensure a level playing field, in line with World Trade Organization principles."

The participants also discussed the idea of supporting Ukraine by using profits from Russian assets that have been frozen as part of sanctions over Moscow's invasion of the country.

The statement says the officials intend to present options to their leaders ahead of the G7 summit next month.

Japan's Finance Minister Suzuki Shunichi spoke to reporters. He said Tokyo's basic position is that international law must be obeyed, as far as the use of profits from Russia's assets are concerned, because Moscow is being condemned for its violations of international law.

The G7 officials remain split on how to handle the Russian assets. It remains to be seen to what extent they will be able to narrow the gap by the G7 summit.

Russian strike on commercial facility kills 11 in Kharkiv

At least 11 people have reportedly been killed in a Russian attack on a busy commercial facility in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

The governor of the Kharkiv region said many others were also injured in an attack using guided bombs on Saturday. Some people remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations are underway.

Eighteen people were also reportedly injured in another strike on a residential area in the regional capital.

The regional prosecutor's office posted footage on social media showing black smoke rising from the commercial facility. The structure was partially reduced to a skeleton.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 200 people could have been at the site when it was struck in the daytime on Saturday.

Russia has recently been launching an offensive in the northern part of Kharkiv across the border. The regional capital Kharkiv has also come under missile attacks.

Zelenskyy said on social media that the lives of ordinary citizens have been targeted.

He added, only such madmen as Russian President Vladimir Putin are capable of killing and terrorizing people in such a vile way.

Israel continues attacks in Rafah despite ICJ order for immediate halt

Israeli forces continued to launch attacks in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip even after the International Court of Justice ordered the country to immediately halt its military offensive there.

Israel announced where it had staged military operations in Gaza on Friday. That was the same day the court in The Hague handed down the provisional measure.

Israel said its troops had broken up a terrorist cell in Rafah, and eliminated dozens of fighters in Jabalia in northern Gaza.

Meanwhile, health officials in Gaza said on Saturday that they had confirmed 46 fatalities in the enclave over the past 24 hours. They said the death toll in Gaza since the start of the Israeli onslaught on October 7 had climbed to 35,903.

Some media outlets quote officials as saying gridlocked negotiations for a pause in the fighting, and the release of remaining hostages held in Gaza, are expected to resume in the coming days.

Reuters news agency quotes an official as saying the decision to restart the talks came after the head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency met with the chief of the CIA and the prime minister of Qatar.

The source added that the negotiations would "open based on new proposals led by the mediators, Egypt and Qatar," and with active US involvement.

Israel and Hamas have honored a pause in their fighting only once since the conflict started on October 7. That lasted for seven days from late November. But both sides have since remained at odds, hindering an agreement on another pause.

It remains unclear whether the deadlock can be broken, even if negotiations resume.

Google's AI search feature gives false information

A new generative artificial intelligence search feature created by Google is said to have given inaccurate answers to questions, according to some US media outlets.

AI Overview was rolled out on May 14 in the United States. It gives answers to sentence-based questions.

The New York Times reported that it instructed some users to mix non-toxic glue into their pizza sauce, when asked how to prevent the cheese from sliding off.

The newspaper also said that AI Overview provided other erratic answers. It apparently stated that former US President Barack Obama is Muslim. He is actually Christian.

Other media outlets have issued reports about a user who asked AI Overview if gasoline can be used to cook spaghetti faster. The search feature said that gasoline cannot be used to cook spaghetti faster, but that it can make spaghetti spicy.

Google told NHK that many of the questions were "uncommon queries." The firm also said, "We appreciate the feedback."

The company's spokesperson added, "We're taking swift action where appropriate under our content policies, and using these examples to develop broader improvements to our systems."
