Ralliers in Tel Aviv urge government to secure release of hostages

Thousands of people gathered at a rally in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Saturday. They urged the government to concentrate on securing the release of the hostages, instead of expanding the military operation in Gaza.

The participants demanded that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resign to take responsibility for his inability to solve the hostage issue.

Negotiations aimed at achieving a cease-fire and securing the release of the hostages have been suspended, as Israel and Hamas have failed to see eye to eye.

Israeli media outlets have quoted Israeli officials as saying that the negotiations will continue, as they have not yet failed completely.

Hamas said in a statement that it will reconsider its strategies for the negotiations.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have been increasing pressure on Hamas by expanding their military operations in Rafah, which is located in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

In a new notice issued by the Israeli military on Saturday, people in central Rafah were advised to evacuate. The military had issued a notice advising people in eastern Rafah to evacuate last Monday.

On Saturday, a Palestinian media outlet reported that seven Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Rafah.

Health authorities in the enclave announced that 34,971 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began.

Israel orders more evacuations in Rafah, drawing international backlash

Israeli forces have issued fresh evacuation orders in Rafah as they prepare to expand their attacks on the southern Gaza city. The move has sparked a backlash from international groups.

The Israeli military ordered people in central Rafah and other areas to evacuate on Saturday. It had earlier issued a notice calling on civilians in eastern Rafah to leave the city, where more than one million individuals are sheltering.

The military said about 300,000 people had fled so far.

The head of the United Nations refugee agency for Palestinians reacted sharply to the latest move.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini wrote in a social media post that since the war began, people in the Gaza Strip have desperately sought safety, but they never found it. He added that there is no safe place in Gaza.

European Council President Charles Michel said on social media, "Evacuation orders for civilians trapped in Rafah to unsafe zones are unacceptable."

He called on Israel to respect international humanitarian law and urged the country not to carry out a ground operation in Rafah.

Gaza health authorities announced on Saturday that 34,971 people have been killed in the enclave so far since the Israel-Hamas conflict began.

Russia says its forces seized five villages in eastern Ukraine's Kharkiv

Russia's Defense Ministry says its forces have seized five border villages in eastern Ukraine's Kharkiv region.

Russian ground troops crossed the border from the north and entered Kharkiv on Friday while carrying out a large-scale shelling offensive.

Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Saturday that fierce fighting has forced the evacuation of about 2,000 residents. He claimed that Ukrainian forces had blocked Russian forces from advancing.

In a video released on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his government is sending more forces toward Kharkiv. He said any attempted invasion by Russians will be disrupted.

The Ukrainian military said on Saturday that fierce fighting against Russian forces continued in the eastern region of Donetsk and elsewhere.

In an assessment report released on Friday, the Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, says "Russian forces will likely leverage their tactical foothold in northern Kharkiv in the coming days to intensify offensive operations."

The think tank's report adds that "Russian offensive operations along the Kharkiv international border likely have the strategic objective of drawing and fixing Ukrainian forces to this axis to enable Russian advances in other areas of eastern Ukraine."

Protesters gather against foreign influence bill in Georgia

Large crowds have gathered in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, protesting a bill which they say is aimed at controlling organizations that receive foreign funding.

The bill was introduced by the ruling party. If adopted, the legislation would require non-government organizations and media outlets receiving more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence.

Protesters say that the bill is similar to a Russian law which is used by the government to limit the activities of organizations and media which the government finds unfavorable.

As voting on the bill is expected to take place soon, tens of thousands of people rallied in a square in central Tbilisi on Saturday.

Participants said that free and democratic Georgia does not need this kind of bill.

One participant said that it is actually a Russian law which would be an obstacle for Georgia's aspiration to join the European Union, expressing hope that the protests will help get the bill rejected.

Another said that they need to protest for their future.

Georgia has applied to join the EU, but the founder of the ruling party is said to be close to Russia.

European Council President Charles Michel said on social media, "Georgian citizens' call for an open democratic and pluralistic society must be heeded."

Giant panda in western Japan enjoys special treats on Mother's Day

A zoo in the western Japanese prefecture of Wakayama has honored a giant panda on Mother's Day for her devotion to raising her offspring.

Rauhin at Adventure World in the town of Shirahama has given birth to a total of 10 cubs.

On Sunday, zoo staff arranged pieces of bamboo to create the message, "Thank you, always." They also treated the mother panda to a bouquet of carnation-shaped carrots and other foods.

Rauhin took a bite of the carrots and then feasted on her favorite bamboo.

Fifty people who applied in advance gathered on the occasion. They enjoyed watching the giant panda, with some taking photos of her.

A woman in her 70s who came with her daughter said she was invited to the zoo by her daughter, who applied for the event. She said she believes it was a Mother's Day gift.

Zookeeper Nakaya Yuka said the staff wanted to show their gratitude to Rauhin for having dedicated herself to raising many cubs. She added that she wants to continue taking good care of Rauhin, so that the panda can stay healthy.

Northern Lights visible across Hokkaido in northern Japan

The Northern Lights were visible in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido from Saturday night through early Sunday morning, following a series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

The lights, also known as the aurora borealis, lit up the night sky in Nayoro City in the northern part of Hokkaido. The sky began to turn purple at around 7 p.m. on Saturday. Many people posted on social media that they had seen it.

In Rikubetsu Town in eastern Hokkaido, a video camera captured the night sky tinted light purple from sunset until dawn.

An official at an observatory in the town that filmed the image said the lights were believed to be low-latitude auroras as the sky behind the clouds shone brightly.

The director of the observatory pointed out that solar flares caused geomagnetic storms, which allowed the Northern Lights to put on a rare show in a lower latitude like Hokkaido.
