Kishida meets senior Chinese Communist Party diplomatic official

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has met with a high-ranking official of the Chinese Communist Party. Kishida expressed his desire to make progress toward resolving pending issues and concerns through dialogue.

Kishida received a courtesy call by Liu Jianchao, the head of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee, on Wednesday.

Liu is now visiting Japan at the invitation of the country's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner Komeito. He is viewed as an important figure who may assume a key role in Chinese diplomacy in the near future.

During the meeting, Kishida said he hopes to accelerate cooperation in areas in which they work together and to resolve pending issues through dialogue, in line with the broader goal of expanding common interests under the "mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests."

In response, Liu referred to the importance of bilateral dialogue and expressed his commitment to enhancing it.

Kishida also stressed the importance of inter-party exchanges for the development of Japan-China relations.

Liu replied that he hopes to further promote exchanges in various areas, including between political parties.

The International Department of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee says Liu told Kishida that maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait is in the common interest of the two countries and Japan should abide by Beijing's "one-China principle."

Liu also reportedly referred to the discharge of treated and diluted water from Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.

He described the water as "nuclear contaminated" and said such sensitive issues should be properly addressed.

The nuclear power plant suffered a triple meltdown during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Water used to cool molten fuel at the plant has been mixing with rain and groundwater. The accumulated water is being treated to remove most radioactive substances, but still contains tritium.
Before releasing the treated water into the ocean, the plant's operator dilutes it to reduce tritium levels to about one-seventh of the World Health Organization's guidance level for drinking water.

Kim acknowledges failure of military spy satellite launch

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has acknowledged for the first time that Pyongyang's fourth launch of a military reconnaissance satellite failed on Monday.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Wednesday that Kim delivered a speech at the Academy of Defense Science on Tuesday. The academy develops military spy satellites.

Kim reportedly noted that a rocket carrying the military reconnaissance satellite had exploded in midair. He said a self-destruct system had activated, due to an abnormality in the first-stage engine.

Kim asserted that North Korea's possession of military reconnaissance satellites is justified, as the nation must counter US military maneuvers and provocative acts.

He said the satellites are needed to further strengthen North Korea's defense and deterrence capabilities, as well as to protect the country's sovereignty from potential threats.

He went on to say that although Monday's launch did not achieve the desired result, North Korea will not be frightened by the failure. He said the nation will instead make a greater effort.

He encouraged the scientists and technicians by telling them that failure is a prerequisite for success.

North Korea has announced that it plans to launch three military spy satellites this year. The country's scientists are expected to investigate the cause of the failure and to carefully consider the timing of the fifth launch.

North Korea sending balloons carrying trash to South Korea

The South Korean military says North Korea has flown large numbers of balloons carrying objects, including trash and waste, into South Korea. The move appears to be in retaliation against South Korean activists' sending balloons with anti-Pyongyang leaflets the other way.

The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Wednesday that the North has been flying the balloons toward the South since Tuesday night. They said some of the balloons have been found in Seoul and areas close to the border with North Korea.

Released photos show balloons with plastic bags attached and trash scattered on the ground. The South Korean military said trash was inside the bags. Local media said what appeared to be manure was also included in the waste.

About 200 balloons have reportedly been found so far. The military's anti-chemical and biological warfare team, as well as an explosive ordnance unit, have been mobilized to inspect and collect the objects.

Expressing worries about possible damage to airports and motorways, the South Korean military warned the North to immediately stop what it called vulgar act.

On May 10, North Korean defectors in South Korea flew balloons carrying leaflets critical of Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un toward the North.

In response, North Korea's vice defense minister said in a statement issued over the weekend that "mounds of wastepaper and filth" would be scattered over border areas in the South in a tit-for-tat action, adding that Seoul will learn how laborious it is to clear them.

US expresses concern over Rafah airstrike but continues military aid to Israel

A senior US government official has expressed concern over the Israeli bombing in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip that killed dozens of people, but indicated there is no change to the US policy of providing military aid to Israel.

Health officials in Gaza said the Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced people northwest of Rafah on Sunday killed at least 45 people, including women and children. They also said a shelling on another camp in Rafah on Tuesday killed at least 21 people.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said in a news conference on Tuesday that the loss of innocent lives in Sunday's strike was "heartbreaking" and "horrific." He called on Israel to "take every precaution possible to do more to protect innocent life."

Kirby refrained from commenting on Tuesday's shelling as Israel's military has denied responsibility.

Reuters news agency and other media outlets quoted witnesses as saying Israeli tanks and armored vehicles were spotted in central Rafah at the time.

But Kirby said the US has not seen evidence of what it considers a major ground offensive.

When asked by reporters of any changes to US policy following Sunday's airstrike and ongoing ground operations, Kirby said, "I have no policy changes to speak to." He acknowledged Sunday's incident would not prompt the US to halt its military aid to Israel.

US President Joe Biden previously warned that the US would withhold weapons shipments to Israel if it conducts a full-scale ground invasion in Rafah.

US media are questioning the Biden administration's criteria for halting military aid as the number of civilian casualties continue to rise.

UN chief Guterres urges Israel to stop Rafah offensive immediately

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has demanded Israel immediately cease attacks on Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

Guterres spoke in an exclusive interview with NHK in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday.

Guterres said that because of the way Israel's attacks in Gaza are being carried out, civilian casualties and the destruction of infrastructure and housing are "unprecedented" during his tenure as secretary-general. He added that the levels of destruction are unacceptable.

Guterres also talked about a recent provisional order by the International Court of Justice for Israel to immediately halt the offensive in Rafah.

Guterres said, "The message is simple. Abide by the decisions of the International Court of Justice. We are in a world where we must make sure that international law prevails, international humanitarian law prevails, the rule of law prevails and decisions of courts, universal courts are respected because they are binding." He said, "This is not an opinion. This is a decision that is binding, Israel must abide by the decision."

He called on other parties around the world to do everything to allow the release of hostages taken by Hamas, stop the destruction and killing of civilians and "create the basis for a two state solution to be implemented." The solution refers to Israel's coexistence with a future Palestinian state.

Rare video of sunfish swallowing jellyfish goes viral

A rare video showing a captive sunfish swallowing a jellyfish is attracting millions of views on social media.

The images were taken at an aquarium in the western Japanese city of Shimonoseki.

The video drew more than 2.5 million views in just over a day after the aquarium posted it on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

An NHK staff member was also able to record the event.

Officials at the Kaikyokan aquarium said the opportunity to see a fish eat a jellyfish whole while in captivity is quite rare. Jellyfish are believed to be part of a typical sunfish diet in the wild.

The officials cited an expert saying the footage may be the first to capture the fish swallowing a jellyfish whole. The expert reportedly suggested that aquarium staff write a thesis on the footage.

Miyazawa Moe, who looks after ocean sunfish at the aquarium, said she hopes that many visitors will come to watch the adorable fish eat.
