Russian President Putin starts 5th term

Russian President Vladimir Putin was sworn in for his fifth term on Tuesday. The term will run through 2030.

Putin took the oath of office in an inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin.

He thanked Russian troops in Ukraine, saying: "We stand as a united and great nation. Together we will overcome all obstacles and ensure that everything we conceive becomes reality. Together we win!"

The widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny posted a message on social media.

Yulia Navalnaya said: "Our country is currently being led by a liar, a thief and a murderer, but this will come to an end. Don't give up. Truth will prevail."

Putin is scheduled to hold a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on Wednesday with leaders of former Soviet republics.

He will also take part in a Victory Day ceremony on Thursday to commemorate the former Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany in World War Two.

Putin is expected to call attention to Russia's cooperation with friendly countries and to push for national unity amid deepening rifts with Western nations over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Japan, China, South Korea prepare to hold three-way summit in late May

Japan, China and South Korea are making preparations to hold a three-way summit late this month. It would be the first such meeting in about four and a half years.

Arrangements have been underway since foreign ministers of the three countries agreed to hold the trilateral summit as soon as possible at a meeting in South Korea last November.

Government sources say Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol are scheduled to meet in Seoul. Kishida will likely visit South Korea from May 26 to 27.

Japan is seeking to reach an agreement on economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges in a bid to promote peace and stability in Asia.

North Korea's nuclear and missile programs are expected to be on the agenda. The three leaders will also likely exchange views on abduction issues.

Kishida is making arrangements to meet separately with Li and Yoon on the sidelines of the event.

The previous three-way summit took place in southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu in December 2019. Japan was represented by the late former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

German naval vessels depart for Indo-Pacific to take part in joint drills

German navy vessels have set off for the Indo-Pacific region to make port calls and hold joint drills with its local partners amid China's increasing maritime activities in the area.

A departure ceremony was held for the supply vessel Frankfurt am Main at the northern German navy base in Wilhelmshaven on Tuesday. German defense minister Boris Pistorius attended the ceremony.

The supply ship and a German frigate departing from a Spanish harbor will meet at sea. Together, they will participate in a US-hosted multinational military drill this summer. They will then head to Japan, where they are scheduled to hold joint drills with the country's Maritime Self-Defense Force in August.

The German government has expressed its determination to actively contribute to stability and security in the Indo-Pacific. It began deploying its forces to the region in 2021.

This year, Germany is also sending its Air Force to the region from mid-June to mid-August. A joint exercise is planned with Japan's Air Self-Defense Force.

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine drags on, surveillance activities in the Baltic Sea and other areas have put an additional burden on the German military.

But Pistorius says Germany wants to strengthen its regional partnerships and establish a firm and trusted presence.

North Korea's ex-propaganda chief Kim Ki Nam dies

A former member of the North Korean leadership who served all three generations of the ruling Kim family as the master of propaganda operations has reportedly died at the age of 94.

The state-run Korean Central Television reported that Kim Ki Nam, former secretary of the Central Committee of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, died of multiple organ failure on Tuesday.

It also stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un paid tribute to the former official at his funeral hall early on Wednesday.

After working as chief editorial writer of the Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun, Kim Ki Nam began overseeing the party's propaganda and ideology control operations in the 1980s.

His service spanned the regimes of the country's founder Kim Il Sung, his son Kim Jong Il and current leader Kim Jong Un.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that Kim Ki Nam orchestrated the efforts to idolize North Korea's leaders.

Kim Jong Un reportedly felt grief over the loss of a veteran revolutionary who remained a loyal, capable official until his death.

He will reportedly head the state funeral committee for Kim Ki Nam.

North Korea conducted rocket engine test in April, US think tank says

A US think tank says North Korea has conducted a rocket engine combustion test in late April at a test facility of the Sohae satellite launching station in the country's northwest.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies, or CSIS, released on Monday findings from the analysis of satellite imagery of the launching station. The image was captured on April 29.

CSIS researchers say they confirmed burned vegetation and ground scarring near the engine test stand. They also say the imagery and several sources suggested that a test of a liquid propellant rocket engine had been carried out.

The South Korean military told reporters on Tuesday that it was aware of the combustion test at the launching facility.

The military said the North is making preparations for its launch of another military spy satellite, although there are no signs of an imminent launch.

North Korea announced last November that it put its first military reconnaissance satellite into orbit. Pyongyang has revealed a plan to launch three more satellites this year.

Japanese citrus region hosts marmalade contest

An international competition to determine the best marmalades is taking place in one of Japan's leading citrus production areas -- Yawatahama City in western Japan's Ehime Prefecture.

Entries began being accepted in March for the sixth annual competition. A record 2,110 submissions were received from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the United States.

Thirteen judges, including chefs and patissiers from Japan and abroad, have gathered at the ferry terminal building at Yawatahama Port this week to screen the entries from Monday through Wednesday.

Working in pairs, the judges are assessing the marmalades for appearance, texture, aroma and flavor, and awarding points along with written comments. The maximum score possible is 30 points.

The contest is divided into two divisions: professional and amateur. The winners of the professional division will be allowed to market their products with the contest logo, while the Grand Prize winner of the amateur division will be able to sell their marmalade commercially.

The contest's results will be announced May 14.

Inoue Yoichi, who heads the event's promotion office in Yawatahama City, says he is pleased the number of entrants is growing year by year. He says he hopes the city will be recognized as "a hallowed place" for marmalade.
