North Korea plans to launch 'satellite'

The Japan Coast Guard says it has been informed by North Korea of its plan to launch what it calls an artificial satellite sometime between May 27 and June 3.

The projectile will likely fall in one of three areas -- two locations in the Yellow Sea southwest of North Korea and one in the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines. All of them are outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Officials are urging vessels operating in the waters to be on the alert for any falling objects.

The Japanese government's task force at the prime minister's office is collecting and analyzing information.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has instructed relevant ministries and agencies to provide people with information appropriately through thorough gathering and analysis of intelligence.

He said Japan will work closely with the United States and South Korea, and strongly urge Pyongyang to exercise self-restraint.

Kishida instructed government agencies to take all possible measures to prepare for any type of event.

Leaders of Japan, China, South Korea adopt joint declaration

South Korea's president says he and the leaders of Japan and China have adopted a joint declaration that includes their pledge to work closely together to achieve regional peace and prosperity.

Yoon Suk-yeol made the announcement during a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, which was held after their talks on Monday.

The summit involving the three countries was held for the first time in nearly four-and-a-half years.

Yoon told reporters that the foundation of cooperation among the three countries is mutual understanding and trust, and their leaders must meet frequently to communicate with each other.

Yoon said the three leaders agreed to make the trade and investment environment transparent and predictable and to establish a secure supply chain.

He said the three countries will also cooperate to tackle environmental and other issues.

Yoon also referred to a plan by North Korea to launch what Pyongyang calls an artificial satellite sometime between May 27 and June 3. He said such a launch is a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and the international community must respond firmly to it.

Tel Aviv targeted by Hamas rocket attack as Israel continues Rafah offensive

Tel Aviv has come under a Hamas rocket attack as Israel continues its offensive in Rafah, southern Gaza. The Israeli media say Tel Aviv was targeted for the first time since January.

Hamas said on Sunday it bombarded Tel Aviv with a rocket barrage.

This comes as the Israeli military continues its operation in Rafah. The International Court of Justice had ordered Israel to immediately halt the attack in the area as a provisional measure.

The Israeli military said it eliminated "terrorist operatives" who attempted to attack its troops in Rafah. It also said the soldiers found large quantities of weapons, such as rifles.

Gaza's health officials say 35 people, most of them women and children, were killed in Israeli bombing on a camp for displaced people northwest of Rafah on Sunday evening.

CNN quoted an Egyptian official as saying negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire and hostage swap deal will resume on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt.

But the outlook for any agreement remains unclear as there is a wide gap between the two sides.

Okinawa's Shuri Castle holds safety ritual as restoration continues after fire

A traditional ceremony has been held to pray for safety for the ongoing reconstruction of Shuri Castle in Okinawa, southern Japan. The main hall and other buildings were destroyed in a blaze in 2019.

About 80 people, including carpenters, took part in the ritual on Monday after part of the roof was completed.

The participants checked the direction and position of the main hall, and lifted a ridge beam with a rope.

They chanted prayers as the timber was knocked into place with a hammer.

Master carpenter Kondo Katsuaki said he is happy to mark a turning point in the restoration of the building.

Okumura Koji, who oversaw the roof work, said the restoration of the castle will take two-and-a-half more years, and he is determined to keep moving forward.

The installation of the roof tiles is expected to begin this summer.

Carpenters completed the framework of the main hall at the end of last year. The rebuilding of the main hall is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2026.

The original Shuri Castle was built about 500 years ago. It was destroyed during World War Two. The main hall and other buildings were reconstructed decades later. In 2000, the ruins of the original castle were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
