Reformist Pezeshkian wins Iranian presidential run-off, Interior Ministry says
Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has won the Iranian presidential run-off election. During the campaign, he called for more dialogue with the West.
Iran's Interior Ministry announced that Pezeshkian defeated hardline conservative Saeed Jalili. The snap election was held after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May.
Pezeshkian is a former deputy parliamentary speaker and health minister. He says he wants to improve relations with the United States and Europe, so they lift sanctions on Iran.
He is expected to change Raisi's hardline diplomatic policy.
But it remains unclear to what extent relations with the West will improve as Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has a big say in important policies.

Hungary's PM Orban meets Putin
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as part of his push to bring about a ceasefire in Ukraine. The meeting on Friday came just a few days after Orban visited Kyiv. Hungary holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, and the trip is drawing criticism.
Orban is widely known as a close Putin ally. The two met to discuss a variety of global issues, including the fighting in Ukraine.
Putin said, "Russia stands for a complete and final end to the conflict." He added, however, that the fighting will stop only if Ukrainian troops withdraw from the four regions Russia has annexed.
Orban said the two sides are far apart but that he will do what he can to bring about a peaceful resolution. He said, "Many steps are needed to end the war, but we managed to take the first important step to restore dialogue, and I will continue to do this work."
Leaders in Kyiv criticized Orban for the visit and repeated their assertion that there can be "no agreements on Ukraine without Ukraine".
Authorities in Europe, too, condemned the trip. Charles Michel, president of the European Council, posted on X, "The EU rotating presidency has no mandate to engage with Russia on behalf of the EU."
Hungarian officials defended the meeting, pointing out that their country is slowly becoming the only one in Europe to engage with parties on both sides of the conflict. They had previously pledged to act as "honest brokers."

MSDF chief reportedly intends to resign over staff handling of secrets
Japan's Defense Ministry is said to be considering reprimanding senior officials of the Maritime Self-Defense Force after a revelation that they let unqualified members handle confidential information. The chief of staff of the MSDF has reportedly expressed his intention to resign.
In April, the ministry suspended the captain of an MSDF destroyer, saying the official allowed unqualified personnel to handle "specially designated secrets," including some concerning a foreign vessel.
Informed sources say investigation by the ministry revealed there were similar cases, such as on multiple other vessels.
They say the MSDF Chief of Staff, Admiral Sakai Ryo, has expressed his intention to resign.
The ministry is expected to announce the results of its investigation and the personnel to be reprimanded as early as this month.
Heads of government bodies have the authority to define as "specially designated secrets" information on defense, diplomacy and in other fields that relate to safety and security of the state and its people. Those who handle such secrets need to be vetted.
