NATO leaders affirm continued support for Ukraine in summit declaration

Leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries have stressed their alliance's unity and affirmed continued support for Ukraine in their summit declaration.

The declaration was adopted on Wednesday at the NATO summit meeting in Washington.

The leaders stressed unity and solidarity in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, saying they are "bound together by shared values: individual liberty, human rights, democracy and the rule of law."

They agreed to strengthen NATO's role in supporting Ukraine and to coordinate the provision of military equipment and training of Ukrainian soldiers.

NATO members have provided 40 billion euros, or about 43 billion dollars, in military aid each year since the start of Russia's invasion. They agreed to sustain that level next year.

The leaders also confirmed efforts to strengthen their countries' defense industries, noting that ammunition is running low on Ukrainian battlefields.

The declaration says the leaders "condemn in the strongest possible terms" the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian people, including a children's hospital in the capital Kyiv, on Monday. It demands that Russia stop the war immediately.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters, "The more credible and enduring our support, the quicker Moscow will realize it cannot wait us out and the sooner the war can end."

In the declaration, the leaders also called China a "decisive enabler" of Russia's war against Ukraine, adding that its actions increase the threat Russia poses to its neighbors and to Euro-Atlantic security.

They urged China to stop all material and political support of Russia's war effort, including the transfer of dual-use components and raw materials.

US media: Pelosi comments signal Biden should reconsider reelection bid

American media are reporting that former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is signaling that Joe Biden should reconsider staying in the presidential race.

Pelosi, a longtime ally of President Biden, gave an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, as Biden faces growing calls to step aside after his shaky performance in a televised debate against former President Donald Trump.

When asked whether she supports Biden, Pelosi said: "It's up to the president to decide if he is going to run. We're all encouraging him to make that decision, because time is running short."

Hollywood star George Clooney, a longtime Democrat who co-hosted a major fundraiser for Biden in June, called on the president to withdraw from the race.

Clooney wrote about the event in an article in The New York Times published on Wednesday, saying Biden was "the same man we all witnessed at the debate."

The actor said, "This is about age." He added, "We are not going to win in November with this president."

Biden gave a speech at a labor union meeting on Wednesday. He noted food prices and rents were too high, and said, "We have a whole range of things we're going to get done with your help in the second term."

Boeing, NASA say Starliner's return to Earth to be further delayed

US aerospace giant Boeing's new Starliner spacecraft is expected to return to Earth much later than initially scheduled due to mechanical issues.

US space agency NASA and Boeing made the announcement on Wednesday.

Starliner lifted off with two NASA astronauts onboard and docked at the International Space Station in June.

The spacecraft was initially planned to bring the crew back to Earth in about a week, but it remains docked to the ISS due to glitches found in its thruster system.

NASA and Boeing said they are currently performing ground tests of the spacecraft's propulsion system, and they will decide on a new return date after reviewing the test results.

No health problems have been reported about the two astronauts.

The astronauts told reporters on Wednesday that it feels great to work with ISS crew members, and that they are not complaining about spending a couple of extra weeks in space.

Starliner is in the final stage of test flights. If approved by NASA, Boeing's spacecraft will be used as another way to taxi astronauts into space.

South Korea appoints girls group NewJeans as ambassadors for tourism

Aiming to enlist the global popularity of K-pop to promote inbound tourism, the South Korean government has appointed the popular girls group NewJeans as honorary ambassadors.

The group's members attended an appointment ceremony in Seoul on Thursday.

Member Minji said they want to be at the forefront of efforts to promote South Korea's wide-ranging attractions.

Speaking at the ceremony, South Korea's culture, sports and tourism minister Yu In-chon said the government hopes to welcome 20 million inbound tourists this year.

He said he has great expectations for the members of NewJeans in their new role.

Tourism promotional videos released at the ceremony showed the group's members enjoying Korean food and other activities.

The videos are to be aired worldwide, including in New York's Times Square, Tokyo and Paris, where the Olympic Games will start later this month.

NewJeans has quickly risen to international fame. In 2023, the five-member group topped the US Billboard albums chart. That same year, it also appeared on NHK's annual New Year's Eve live music show.
