Incumbent Koike Yuriko wins third term as Tokyo governor
Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko has won her third term in Sunday's election.
Koike addressed her supporters and cited various challenges Tokyo is facing, such as soaring prices and the falling birthrate. She has pledged to take action against the latter by expanding free childcare.
Koike said: "Our challenge is how to proceed with digital transformation as industries have changed significantly. Furthermore, the environment for women's empowerment is insufficient compared to other parts of the world. We must raise our efforts to keep improving Tokyo."
During the campaign, Koike stressed the achievements of her two terms in the governor's job. The 71-year-old Koike is a former defense minister who has served in both the upper and lower houses of Japan's Diet. She became Tokyo's first female governor in 2016.
Koike beat a record 55 rivals in the race, winning nearly 3-million votes. She was backed by the Liberal Democratic Party, Komeito and several other parties.
Ishimaru Shinji, former mayor of Akitakata City in western Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture, followed Koike, earning more than one-and-a-half million votes without any support from political parties. NHK's exit polls show that he's believed to have gained more than 40 percent of votes from 18 to 29 year-old voters.
Former Upper House lawmaker Renho came third. She was backed by several opposition parties, including the Constitutional Democratic Party.
The LDP and CDP both reacted after the election.
LDP Acting Secretary-General Inada Tomomi said: "I think it is a certain achievement for our party, but I don't think Koike's victory is a victory for the LDP. At the same time, the criticism of our party has not subsided yet, and we're still in a very difficult situation, so I feel once again that it is necessary to push forward with reform."
CDP Election Strategy Committee Chairperson Oogushi Hiroshi said: "I think we should have been in a position to gain votes critical of Koike's performance as Tokyo Governor, but we couldn't manage to do that. I would like to carefully analyze why Renho, and we, couldn't get enough support from independent voters.
Turnout was 60.62 percent, up 5.62 points from the previous race for Tokyo governor.

N.Korea stresses military power as it marks 30 years since Kim Il Sung's death
North Korea has underscored its missile and nuclear prowess and criticized South Korea for its recent military drills as the North on Monday marked the 30th anniversary of the death of Kim Il Sung, who is regarded as the country's founder.
The country's current leader, Kim Jong Un, is the grandson of Kim Il Sung.
The ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun carried a large portrait of the late founder on its front page. It called for loyalty to the younger Kim, who succeeded his father and grandfather as leader of North Korea.
It also carried a photo of the ICBM-class Hwasong-18.
The newspaper said the country has become the world's strongest power that no one can touch, indicating the nuclear and missile development programs under Kim Jong Un.
The Rodong Sinmun also carried a statement by Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong Un.
Kim Yo Jong lashed out at South Korea's resumption last month of live-fire artillery drills near the land and maritime borders as an "explicit provocation that aggravates the situation."
She also criticized the Freedom Edge joint drills conducted by the United States, Japan and South Korea in June, making Pyongyang's confrontational stance clear.
Her statement said in case it is judged that the drills violated the sovereignty of North Korea and committed an act tantamount to a declaration of war, "our armed forces will immediately carry out its mission and duty assigned" by the country's Constitution.

Zelenskyy hopeful NATO leaders agree to more assistance for Ukraine
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope that NATO leaders will agree to boost assistance to his country as Russian forces are intensifying their offensive in eastern Ukraine.
The NATO summit will open in Washington on Tuesday.
Zelenskyy said in a social media post on Saturday: "To protect all our cities and villages, and to truly overcome Russian terror, we need more concrete decisions. Next week, we will work with our partners for such decisions."
Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry said in a statement on Sunday that its forces have taken control of a village in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. It also said the forces improved their tactical positions as a result of active operations.
Ukrainian forces announced they had shot down Russia's Su-25 aircraft on the Pokrovsk front in the Donetsk region.
Attention is focused on how much assistance NATO leaders will be able to come up with while Zelenskyy has been stressing the need for support in obtaining long-range missiles and enhancing air defense systems.

Japanese rookie pitcher Imanaga picked for Major League All-Star Game
Japanese pitcher and Major League Baseball rookie Imanaga Shota has been picked to play in the MLB All-Star Game scheduled for July 16 in Texas.
Imanaga of the Chicago Cubs will join the game along with Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Dodgers as National League teammates.
Ohtani had been chosen earlier as a designated hitter by fan votes. Imanaga's selection was announced on Sunday. Pitchers are picked in votes by MLB players.
The southpaw has started in 16 games so far in his first MLB season, marking 7 wins and 2 losses, with a 3.16 earned run average. He has only given 15 walks, the least among the National League pitchers with a qualifying number of innings pitched.
Imanaga is the ninth Japanese player to have been picked for the All-Star Game in their first year with the MLB.
Imanaga told reporters after a home game that he is pleased to be chosen. He said that if he has a chance to pitch, he will do his best so many people will remember his name and face.
He said he hopes to watch all the hurlers pitch or play catch, even in the bullpen, should he have a chance.
Imanaga also said he never expected to be a teammate of Ohtani on such an occasion, and he feels honored. He also said he would like to learn the keys to success from Ohtani, who has been a top player in the baseball world for a long time.
