Mercury reaches 40 degrees Celsius in Shizuoka
Japanese weather officials are warning the public about heatstroke as extremely hot weather continues on Sunday.
Several elderly people have died of possible heatstroke.
The Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system in the Pacific Ocean continues to cover wide areas across western and eastern Japan, raising temperatures.
The mercury reached 40 degrees Celsius in Shizuoka City in central Japan at 1:18 p.m., the highest ever in the city since the agency started keeping records in 1940.
It is the first time temperatures reached 40 in Japan since August 10 of last year in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast.
Sunday's daytime high reached 39.8 in Shimonita Town, Gunma Prefecture, 38.8 in the town of Namie, Fukushima Prefecture and the cities of Otsuki in Yamanashi Prefecture and Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The agency and the Environment Ministry have issued heatstroke alerts for 26 prefectures from Kanto to Okinawa, including Tokyo.
People are urged to use air conditioners appropriately, and avoid unnecessary outings and exercise.
Families are advised to give special attention to the elderly and children who are vulnerable to heatstroke.

96-year-old dies of heatstroke, other cases suspected in Japan
A 96-year-old man has died of heatstroke in the southern prefecture of Oita as extremely hot weather covered Japan.
The man was found lying in the yard of his family house in Bungo-ono City at about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
He was brought to a hospital but died about two and a half hours later.
Local police say that the cause of death was heatstroke.
The temperature there soared to 35.8 degrees Celsius shortly after 3:30 p.m., the record high for the year.
Elsewhere, authorities suspect heatstroke as the cause of death of a man in Aichi Prefecture, a woman in Ehime Prefecture and another woman in Tokushima Prefecture where high temperatures were recorded.

Voters cast ballots in Tokyo gubernatorial election
Voters in Tokyo are casting ballots on Sunday to decide the next leader of the capital. A record 56 candidates are running for governor.
Polling stations opened at 7 a.m.
The main focus in campaigning has been incumbent Koike Yuriko's performance in the last eight years during her two terms.
Candidates have also made a number of proposals. One big issue to tackle is the declining number of births. Tokyo was recently found to have the lowest total fertility rate in the country.
Election officials say the early voting option was taken by about 2.1 million people, up 23 percent from the previous election. That means about 19 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots early.
Polls will close by 8 p.m. and vote counting will start the same night.

One-year mission in NASA's Mars habitat simulation finished
US space agency NASA has wrapped up an experiment with a volunteer crew of four people spending one year in a facility that simulates living on Mars.
The aim of the mission was to learn about the possible impact for astronauts staying on the planet in the future. The four volunteers entered the simulated Mars habitat at Johnson Space Center in the US state of Texas in June last year.
The facility features 3D printed private crew quarters and workstations. It also has an area with red sand resembling the surface of Mars.
The crew conducted various experiments, including growing vegetables to help with food self-sufficiency.
On Saturday, the four members left the facility for the first time in about a year. They were welcomed by applause as the door opened.
One of the participants, biologist Kelly Haston, said she is proud and honored to be part of "the work being done here on earth that will one day enable humans to explore and live on Mars."
The United States is leading the international lunar exploration program Artemis, which also aims to eventually facilitate human missions on Mars.
NASA plans to analyze the data obtained and use it for future space explorations.

Victory speech by Iran's president-elect, amid Khamenei pressure
Iran's President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian has delivered his first speech after winning Friday's presidential runoff.
Pezeshkian won more than 53 percent of votes as the sole reformist candidate, defeating hardline conservative Saeed Jalili who garnered about 44 percent.
During the campaign, Pezeshkian called for more dialogue with Western countries, while Jalili vowed not to hesitate in confronting the West.
Voter turnout in the runoff stood at 49.8 percent, an increase of about 10 percent from the first round of voting in June.
People who are discontent with the current situation are believed to have supported Pezeshkian.
In a victory speech on Saturday, Pezeshkian said that Iran is faced with a test to ease the concerns of people who strive for a better life.
The former deputy parliamentary speaker and health minister also said that he did not give people false promises in this election.
He expressed a readiness to try to improve relations with the West in a bid to have economic sanctions lifted, and revive the 2015 agreement on Iran's nuclear development.
People in the capital Tehran expressed their hope for a change. One 42-year-old man said that he wants the president-elect to start working as soon as possible on getting the sanctions lifted.
A 42-year-old woman said she expects Pezeshkian to build relations with other countries, taking into consideration the social situation.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued a statement that said the president-elect is advised to continue the course of his predecessor and envision a bright future for the country's development.
Pezeshkian will replace hardline President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash in May.
Attention is focused whether the president-elect can usher in any major shift in foreign policy in a parliament controlled by conservatives.

Putin is increasingly confident of victory in Ukraine, US think tank says
A US think tank believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is so confident that his country will be victorious in Ukraine that he is not considering a ceasefire.
Putin told Russian media outlets on Thursday that Russia cannot allow Ukraine to take advantage of a ceasefire to improve its positions.
Putin spoke to reporters again on Friday. He said a condition for a ceasefire would be the withdrawal of Kyiv's forces from the four Ukrainian regions that Russia has unilaterally annexed.
The Institute for the Study of War released an assessment on Friday. It said, "Putin's rejection of any ceasefire indicates that he is increasingly confident in his assessment that Russia can pursue victory by continuing creeping advances in Ukraine, outlasting Western support for Ukraine, and winning a war of attrition against Ukrainian forces."
The think tank stressed that the West must quickly provide Ukraine with the support it needs to conduct counteroffensive operations, so that a peace deal acceptable to Ukraine and its partners can be secured.
Ukrainian forces remain determined to hold their lines and positions. They also want to retake some of the territories that Russia is occupying.
Kyiv has been calling for Western military assistance ahead of a summit that will be attended by representatives of NATO member states. The meeting is scheduled to begin in the US on July 9.

Leaping cherry salmon delight crowds in Hokkaido
People are flocking to the town of Kiyosato in Japan's northernmost Hokkaido Prefecture to see thousands of cherry salmon attempt to scale a waterfall.
The fish swim up the Sharigawa River from the Sea of Okhotsk at this time of year to lay their eggs. The journey includes a three-meter waterfall called Sakuranotaki.
The local tourist association says only about 10 percent of the fish successfully leap to the top. The others spawn at the base, or downstream.
The waterfall attracts about 25,000 people every year.
A man from Kitami City in Hokkaido visited for the first time. He described feeling overwhelmed by the spectacle, and said he's glad he came.
A man visiting from Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo said he admires the perseverance of the fish.
The leaping cherry salmon can be viewed through August.
