Trump formally accepts Republican presidential nomination
Former US President Donald Trump has formally accepted the Republican Party's nomination as its candidate for the November presidential election.
Trump spoke on the last day of the four-day Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday. It was his first public address since the assassination attempt last Saturday.
He said: "The discord and division in our society must be healed quickly. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny."
He added, "I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America."
A Trump campaign official disclosed that the former president drastically rewrote the speech after the attempt on his life.
Trump is apparently calling on Americans to unite in hopes of boosting momentum for his presidential bid through the speech, while President Joe Biden faces increasing pressure to end his reelection campaign.

Trump to accept nomination in speech at Republican convention
Former US President Donald Trump is to deliver a speech on Thursday at the Republican National Convention, accepting the party's nomination as its candidate for the November presidential election. It will be his first address at the event since he survived an attempt on his life.
Trump will take the stage on the final day of the convention. He has attended every day since it opened in the Midwestern state of Wisconsin, two days after Saturday's assassination attempt.
Trump revealed after the shooting that the speech would be an opportunity to bring Americans together. A Trump campaign official disclosed that the former president had drastically rewritten it himself.
Trump is likely to use the address to project himself as a strong leader who never yields to violence. He is also expected to seek to unite people, including Republican moderates and swing voters who have distanced themselves from him.
Trump's rivals for the Republican nomination threw their support behind him. They included Nikki Haley, a former ambassador to the United Nations.
Republican efforts to present a united front come at a time when President Joe Biden of the Democratic Party is under growing pressure to quit his reelection bid.

Washington Post: Pelosi thinks Biden may be persuaded to exit race soon
A major US newspaper says former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes President Joe Biden can be persuaded to exit the presidential race fairly soon.
The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Pelosi told several House Democrats that she thinks Biden is getting close to deciding to abandon his reelection bid. The paper says calls have been growing for Biden to step down, since he gave a halting performance during a debate last month.
It is said that the former speaker retains much influence on Biden and Democrats in the House.
The Washington Post also cited sources as saying that former President Barack Obama told allies recently that Biden's path to winning reelection has diminished greatly. The newspaper said Obama told associates that Biden needs to seriously reconsider the viability of his candidacy.
An official from the Biden camp told reporters on Thursday that the president will continue his reelection bid. But the Washington Post said, "Biden appears more politically isolated than ever."

Obama tells allies Biden's path to winning reelection diminished, US paper says
A major US newspaper says former President Barack Obama has told allies in recent days that President Joe Biden's path to winning reelection has greatly diminished.
The Washington Post broke the news on Thursday, quoting multiple sources. It says Obama has also told associates that Biden needs to seriously consider the viability of his candidacy.
Obama, who worked with Biden for eight years as president and vice president respectively, has retained influence in the Democratic Party.
He backed Biden following the president's faltering performance in a televised debate against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump late last month, but has publicly remained silent since then.
CNN says former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Biden that polling shows he cannot defeat Trump.
ABC News reports that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer made a case to Biden that it would be best if he dropped out of the race. It adds that House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed similar views directly to the president.
Biden has been self-isolating at his home in the eastern state of Delaware since he tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday.
A physician treating Biden released a statement on Thursday, saying the president is still experiencing mild upper respiratory symptoms and remains on medication.
An official of the Biden camp told reporters on Thursday that the president will continue his reelection bid.

North Korea's Kim holds talks with Russian military delegation
A North Korean media outlet says the country's leader Kim Jong Un stressed the need for Pyongyang and Moscow to strengthen military ties in a meeting with a Russian delegation.
Friday's edition of the ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported that Kim met a Russian military delegation in Pyongyang on Thursday. The delegation was led by vice defense minister Aleksey Krivoruchko.
The meeting reportedly confirmed the importance and necessity of the military cooperation between the two countries to defend mutual security interests.
The paper said Kim expressed North Korea's strong support for Russia's military operation in Ukraine.
It said Kim stressed the need for the two countries' militaries to be united more firmly to lead bilateral relations in a new era to play an important role in defending international justice.
Last month, North Korea and Russia concluded a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty that pledges mutual military assistance if either country is placed under a state of war.
North Korea sent a delegation of military education officials to Russia earlier this month.

S.Korea resumes loudspeaker broadcasts in response to N.Korea trash balloons
The South Korean military says it conducted a loudspeaker broadcast campaign against North Korea overnight near the military demarcation line. The move comes after North Korea's latest launch of trash-carrying balloons.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on Friday that its propaganda broadcast, using frontline loudspeakers, took place between Thursday evening and early Friday.
The JCS said it had detected numerous balloons sent by the North since Thursday. Dozens were found in Gyeonggi Province near Seoul.
North Korea has repeatedly sent balloons with bags of trash attached to them across the border since May.
Pyongyang said the acts are in retaliation for the flying of balloons carrying anti-North Korea leaflets by activists in South Korea.
The South Korean propaganda broadcast was the first since June 9. These broadcasts usually contain criticism of the North Korean leadership and news about developments in South Korea. They are aimed at lowering the morale of North Korean soldiers.
The South Korean military is on alert for possible reactions by North Korea.

China's Communist Party sets new goal of completing reform by 2029
The Chinese Communist Party has set a goal of completing reforms by 2029, announcing it with a communique issued at the end of a key meeting on economic policy. President Xi Jinping's current term as party head is set to end in 2027.
The party wrapped up the third plenary session of the party's 20th Central Committee on Thursday after four days of discussions. The communique was released through China's state-run media.
The document says the meeting adopted a resolution to further deepen reform comprehensively, as advocated by Xi, and advance Chinese-style modernization. The communique mentions a plan to improve party leadership.
It also says the party will support the development of the non-public sector as well as the public sector, and ensure they can compete in the market on an equal footing.
It adds that the party will improve institutions and mechanisms for fostering "new quality productive forces," and will implement measures to prevent and defuse risks in real estate, local government debt and other areas.
It says the reform tasks laid out in the resolution shall be completed by the time the country celebrates the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the People's Republic of China in 2029.
It says the party plans to lay a solid foundation for building China into a "great modern socialist country" by the middle of this century.
The communique also stressed the necessity of emphasizing national security, saying this is a pivotal foundation for ensuring progress in Chinese modernization.
The communique also refers to the meeting's decision to expel former Defense Minister Li Shangfu from the party, saying he seriously violated party discipline and law.
The meeting also accepted a letter of resignation from former Foreign Minister Qin Gang and decided to remove him from the Central Committee.
Both were dismissed from the Cabinet last year.
Takahara Akio, distinguished visiting professor at Tokyo Woman's Christian University, specializes in China's modern politics.
Takahara referred to the communique's goal of completing reform by 2029, which will come after Xi's current third term as party head expires in 2027. He says this gives the impression that Xi has no intention of stepping aside after the end of his third term.

Paris police officer seriously wounded in knife attack
A police officer has been seriously wounded by an attacker armed with a knife in central Paris. Security is tight in the French capital, as the Paris Olympics start on Friday of next week.
The police in Paris say on Thursday night they received reports that a man holding a knife was in a store near the Champs-Elysees avenue. They say police officers rushed to the scene, and that the man ran out of the store.
The police say the officers pursued the man, but that he confronted them with the knife. He reportedly stabbed one officer, but was shot by another officer. Local media outlets indicate that the assailant died later.
Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told reporters that the attacker was a 27-year-old foreign national. The chief explained that at this point the incident does not appear to be linked to terrorism.
A nearby resident said that the attack may have made some people anxious, as there are many tourists in the city. He said he hopes the Olympics will start without any trouble.

New MSDF chief assumes post after staff misconduct
The chief of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force has been replaced following a series of cases of misconduct that include those involving handling of confidential information related to national security.
Sakai Ryo resigned as MSDF Chief of Staff on Friday. Saito Akira assumed the post on the same day.
Last week, Defense Minister Kihara Minoru announced the replacement, saying it was prompted by a series of illegal and inappropriate practices involving "specially designated secrets" and fraudulent allowance claims by MSDF divers.
The outgoing chief asked Saito to carry out reforms in a handover ceremony at the Defense Ministry in Tokyo.
Saito responded that he will deal appropriately with misconduct. He said there is no time to waste, considering the security environment surrounding the country.
Regarding the fraudulent allowance claims, the ministry said the total amount may be as much as 53-million yen, or about 340,000 dollars, up about 10-million yen from the ministry's previous disclosure last week.

Grilled eel shipments peak in Japan to beat summer heat
Shipments of grilled eel are in full swing at a factory in southwestern Japan ahead of the day when people traditionally eat the fish to maintain their stamina in the summer heat.
This year, the Day of the Ox marking midsummer falls on next Wednesday.
About 100 employees are grilling up to 30,000 eels a day at the food-processing factory in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The daily shipments can reach nearly 6 tons.
Over half the eels come from the prefecture, which is Japan's top producer of farmed eels, helped by its warm weather and rich groundwater.
Live eels are put in ice to stop them moving before being sliced but there are regional variations. In the Kanto region of eastern Japan, the fish is cut open from the back. The Kansai and Kyushu regions in western through southwestern Japan prefer cutting from the belly.
Eel fillets are grilled alternately using an electric heater and gas, before being sprayed with steam as hot as 300 degrees Celsius. They are then dipped in a sauce and grilled. This process is repeated four times. The cooked eels are quickly frozen at a temperature of minus 40 degrees Celsius before being packed.
A sales manager of the eel-processing company said the employees are producing top quality eels, and he hopes consumers will eat the delicacy to beat the summer heat.
The eels will be delivered to markets across Japan for the Day of the Ox.
