Trump, Zelenskyy discuss Russian invasion of Ukraine by phone

Former US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have held phone talks on Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The conversation took place after Trump's official nomination as the opposition Republican Party's presidential candidate for the November election.

Trump announced his meeting with Zelenskyy in a social media posting on Friday. He said as the next president of the United States, he "will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families."

Zelenskyy also took to a social media platform and said, "I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation's freedom and independence."

Zelenskyy also wrote, "We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting."

Trump has repeated that he intends to end the conflict if elected US president. Since he has not presented any specific means to do so, Ukraine and European nations are skeptical about his plan.

Israel hints at countermeasures after Houthi-claimed drone attack on Tel Aviv

Israel has hinted at countermeasures after a drone strike on the country's largest commercial city of Tel Aviv. The Yemen-based anti-government Houthi group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

One person was killed and eight wounded in the strike on Friday.

Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari said the drone was likely a Samad-3 that flew from Yemen to Tel Aviv.

He added that the Samad-3 is an Iranian weapon, and that the drone was likely upgraded to extend its flight range.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said he held an emergency meeting to review the steps required to strengthen the country's "defense arrays," as well as the "intelligence and operational activities required against those responsible for the attack."

Israeli media outlet Haaretz said the attack "signals a new stage in the war, setting it up to be a regional, multifront conflict."

Amid Israel's ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have expressed solidarity with the Islamic group Hamas. As Lebanon-based Shia militant group Hezbollah has also continued to launch attacks against Israel, concerns are rising that conflict could spread further in the region.

ICJ: Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory unlawful

The International Court of Justice has described Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories as "unlawful."

The court in The Hague released an advisory opinion on Friday about Israel's occupation, which began in 1967.

It says Israel is under an obligation to immediately cease new settlement activities, and to evacuate all settlers from occupied Palestinian territory.

Israel continues to attack the Gaza Strip, and will likely come under more criticism now that the court has deemed the settlement policy to be illegal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded in a statement on Friday, saying the ICJ cannot deny the legal right of Israelis to live in their ancestral home.

Nauru president talks about diplomatic shift toward China

The leader of Nauru has spoken to NHK about why the Southern Pacific island nation recently severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China.

President David Adeang was in Tokyo to attend the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting, hosted by Japan every three years.

Nauru established diplomatic relations with China in January and severed ties with Taiwan. The Solomon Islands and Kiribati, also Pacific island nations, did the same in 2019.

Speaking on Friday, Adeang said, "We are confident that we will be on the right side of history for partnering with China at this time."

He went on to say China's economy can't be ignored, and that the country has a lot of technology to support the development of small island nations.

Nauru has a population of just over 12,000.

Adeang said a port reconstruction project led by China and supported by the Asian Development Bank is expected to be completed no later than the middle of next year.

He said Nauru's infrastructure needs improving, and described the plan as a "very exciting, transformational project for the people."

The party had announced on Thursday that Trong was letting go of his duties to focus on his medical treatment, without mentioning his condition.

Paris Olympics opening ceremony like a 'big fresco'

Details about the Paris Olympics opening ceremony have been sparse, other than it will take place along the River Seine. But with one week to go, the event's artistic director has likened his vision to a "big fresco," and a celebration of humanity.

Thomas Jolly and other senior officials from the creative team spoke on Friday from a hotel terrace in the French capital.

The July 26 event will see the athletes ride on boats. The ceremony will be the first for a Summer Games held outside a stadium.

Jolly described the event as a place where "we can love each other and also ourselves," adding that it is important to "celebrate shared humanity."

The organizing committee says nearly 3,000 artists will take part in the four opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics and Paralympics.

France locks down central Paris ahead of Olympic opening ceremony

French authorities have started implementing entry restrictions in central Paris ahead of the July 26 opening ceremony for the Summer Olympic Games.

Athletes from around the world will ride boats along over 6-kilometer route on the Seine River during the opening ceremony parade.

On Thursday, the authorities set up a terrorism alert zone using metal fences and other barriers along about 10 kilometers of the river.

Access to the zone is generally restricted except for those who live or work within it, as well as officials and staff working for the Olympics.

Near the Eiffel Tower, residents were seen showing pre-approved entrance passes to police officers to enter the area.

A resident said that she agrees with the strict security measures as anything could happen.

People who were not aware of the restrictions or had not yet received a pass were seen giving up trying to pass through.

A man on a bike said that he wanted to cross a bridge to get to his workplace but couldn't due to the restrictions. He said he had assumed only vehicles were barred from the area.

A cafe manager said that the number of customers will probably decrease by more than half as the streets are closed.

She said that the Olympic Games are a festival for Paris, but business owners have mixed feelings about them.

Festival in Japan town hit by 2011 tsunami features millions of sunflowers

Millions of sunflowers are blooming on farmland in a town on the Japan's northeastern Pacific coast that was hit hard by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Farmers in Yamamoto Town's Kasano District have been planting them every year since 2018 as sunflowers help make the damaged soil fertile for growing crops.

About a half of the 2.8 million Sun Marino variety of relatively short sunflowers on a tract of 7.6 hectares are in bloom.

The town kicked off a sunflower festival on Friday for visitors to enjoy picking and taking photos of the flowers and strolling.

A woman in her 70s from a neighboring town said the yellow flowers in full bloom brighten her heart. She said she wants to come back to view them many more times.

The festival will run through July 28. The sunflowers are expected to be in full bloom early next week.
