Trump injured in shooting at Pennsylvania rally, suspected shooter dead

Former US President Donald Trump's ear was injured by a bullet fired during a Saturday rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service says the suspected shooter and at least one rally attendee are dead.

Multiple gunshots rang out intermittently about ten minutes into Trump's speech.

Trump ducked under the podium before he was escorted away by Secret Service agents.

The Secret Service posted a message on social media, saying that the former president is safe, and that the person suspected of firing the shots is dead. At least one person attending the rally was killed and two others were seriously injured.

ABC News quoted investigative authorities as saying that the suspect fired 8 rounds from a rifle from the rooftop of a building.

A woman attending the rally said that she heard "a bang-bang that sounded like a firecracker."

Trump released a statement on social media after the shooting.

Trump thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement for their rapid response. He added that he wants to "extend his condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed" as well as those injured.

Trump commented that "It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country" and added that nothing is known at this time about the shooter.

Trump said that a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear. He said he "knew immediately that something was wrong" when he heard a whizzing sound and shots. He said he noticed bleeding and knew what had happened.

US President Joe Biden strongly condemned the incident. He commented on social media and stressed that "there is no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."

The White House announced that Biden spoke to Trump after the shooting and that the president has changed his schedule to return to Washington to receive updates on the incident.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio posted a condemnation of the shooting of the former US president on social media.

Kishida commented, "We must stand firm against any form of violence that challenges democracy. I pray for former President Trump's speedy recovery."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on social media that he was "shocked by the apparent attack". The prime minister added that he prays for Trump's "safety and speedy recovery."

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer posted on social media that he is "appalled by shocking scenes at President Trump's rally". He added that "Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all victims of this attack."

Northern Kyushu region, Yamaguchi Prefecture could experience torrential rain

Bursts of intense rain have been pounding Japan's southwestern region of Kyushu. Bands of the type of clouds that cause such torrential rain may form over northern Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture, sharply raising the risk of rain-related disasters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says that warm and damp air has been flowing toward a seasonal rain front over the country, destabilizing atmospheric conditions over the western and eastern regions.

Rainfall in the town of Aya in Miyazaki Prefecture totaled 105 millimeters in a one-hour period through 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Bands of heavy rain clouds developed over the city of Goto in Nagasaki Prefecture on Sunday morning.

A mudslide alert is in effect for parts of Kagoshima Prefecture.

Downpours accompanied by lightning could sweep across northern Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture through Monday noon.

Thunderstorms are also expected to pummel Ehime Prefecture through late Sunday. Rain triggered a mudslide in the city of Matsuyama in the prefecture on Friday, leaving three people dead.

Total precipitation in the 24 hours through Monday morning could reach 250 millimeters in northern Kyushu and 180 millimeters in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Meteorological agency officials are warning of mudslides, floods and swollen and overflowing rivers.

People are advised to stay updated on the latest weather information and evacuation bulletins from local governments. They should also stay away from mountain slopes and rivers.

Hamas condemns Israeli attacks in northern Gaza

The Islamic group Hamas has condemned Israeli attacks on civilians in the northern Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces continued their offensive across the enclave on Saturday. In Gaza City, ground troops were supported by the air force. The Israeli military says the operations were aimed at eliminating Hamas fighters regrouping in the area.

On Friday, the military said it killed the deputy commander of a Hamas battalion based in Gaza City. It said it found large quantities of weapons, including tactical drones and rockets, inside a UN compound.

Hamas has condemned Israeli forces for targeting a neighborhood of Gaza City. It says the forces set fire to residential buildings and killed civilians, including elderly people and children.

Countries including Qatar have been mediating talks on a ceasefire and release of hostages. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists the deal must not prevent his country from resuming its operations after the ceasefire until its objectives are met. Hamas is resisting.

In Israel, far-right political parties which are part of Netanyahu's coalition government have expressed strong opposition to the negotiations. But the families of hostages have stepped up their criticism of Netanyahu, saying he is trying to derail a potential ceasefire and is putting the lives of the hostages in danger.

Gaza officials: At least 90 people killed in Israeli airstrike on Khan Younis

Health officials in Gaza say a major Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza has killed at least 90 people and wounded 300 others.

Israeli forces staged the airstrike in Khan Younis on Saturday. They say the attack targeted Hamas leaders.

Footage taken by a cameraman at NHK's Gaza office shows many wounded people, including children, being rushed to hospital.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that there still isn't absolute certainty that the airstrike killed the two targeted Hamas commanders. One of them is Mohammed Deif, who heads the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.

A statement from Hamas said the strike took place in an area crowded with more than 80,000 displaced people.

It said Israel's allegations about targeting Hamas leaders are false, and are merely aimed at covering up the scale of what it called a "horrific massacre."

The latest developments could derail ongoing efforts by Qatari mediators and others seeking an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of hostages.

Hamas says the bombing of Khan Younis clearly confirms that the Israeli government intends to continue its war against the Palestinian people.

IMF and Pakistan agree on 7-billion-dollar loan deal

The International Monetary Fund has announced that it reached a staff-level agreement with the government of Pakistan on a loan of about seven billion dollars.

Pakistan has suffered economic difficulties following major flooding in 2022, with its currency values plunging and inflation surging.

Experts say the country's debt-to-GDP ratio is above 70 percent.

The IMF says in a statement on Friday that the latest 37-month Extended Fund Facility Arrangement is to support efforts to "cement macroeconomic stability."

The agreement is subject to approval by the IMF's executive board and confirmation of necessary financing assurances from Pakistan's development and bilateral partners.

Pakistani media outlets reported that the deal would bring a much-needed respite to the country.

The government has introduced new tax reforms to fix the country's finances. Authorities will need to convince people that such unpopular measures are needed to achieve fiscal stability.
