Trump holds Michigan rally, first since shooting
Former US President Donald Trump has appealed for support at his first election campaign rally since his attempted assassination one week earlier.
The event was held indoors in the battleground state of Michigan on Saturday under heightened security.
Trump said the Democrats keep saying that he is the threat to democracy. He asked what he did for democracy? He answered, "Last week, I took a bullet for democracy."
Speaking in a state that is a hub of the US automotive industry, Trump vowed to bring back the industry.
Trump also said he had received a "beautiful note" from Chinese President Xi Jinping after he suffered a gunshot wound.
On this day, the large white gauze dressing on his right ear was replaced by a smaller flesh colored bandage.
Trump's running mate, J.D. Vance, also attended the rally, making it the first one where both the presidential and vice presidential candidates appeared together.
Vance called for strengthening immigration policy. He vowed to shut down the border and make America safe for American citizens again.
The Washington Post reported that the rally was initially planned to be held outdoors, but changed to indoors after the July 13 shooting incident.
The newspaper said the Trump campaign does not expect to hold any more outdoor rallies soon.
Also on Saturday, Trump's former physician and Congressman from Texas Ronny Jackson gave new details on the GOP nominee's wound on his right ear.
Jackson said in a statement that the wound was 2 centimeters wide and reached the cartilage. He said the bullet came about 6 millimeters from entering Trump's head and struck the top of his right ear.
He said there was initially significant bleeding, followed by marked swelling of the upper ear. He said the swelling has since resolved, and the wound is beginning to heal properly. He said no sutures were required.
Jackson said Trump will have further medical evaluations, including a hearing exam, as needed. He said the former president will follow up with his primary care physician.
In front of the White House, a group of about 70 demonstrators gathered on Saturday to call on President Joe Biden to step down from the presidential race.
The participants held up signs saying "Pass the Torch."
A man in his 30s said he had driven eight hours from Michigan. He said Biden has done great things as president, and he is proud of him in many ways, but it is time to let the younger generation lead. He said it is not too late to wait until the Democratic national convention so long as they choose the best nominee.

US media: Biden's family has discussed possible plan for him to exit race
A US media outlet says members of US President Joe Biden's family have discussed how his election campaign should end, if he decides to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
On Friday, NBC News quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that members of Biden's family have discussed what an exit from his campaign might look like.
NBC says the family members have indicated in conversations that any plan to exit the race should put the Democratic Party in the best position to beat former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate.
The members have also reportedly noted that any plan should reflect the more than five decades that Biden has served the country in elected office.
But a White House spokesperson has denied that the family members have had such discussions.
Biden issued a statement on Friday. He stressed that he intends to push on with his reelection bid, even though some are calling for him to end it.
The president has been self-isolating since he tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday.
Biden's doctor released a letter on Saturday. He wrote that the president "is still experiencing a loose nonproductive cough and hoarseness." But he added that Biden's "symptoms continue to improve steadily."
US media outlets say that Biden could reach a "critical" point over the next few days.

NASA to use new SpaceX deorbit vehicle to bring down ISS
The National Aeronautic and Space Administration of the United States has announced a plan to use a new spacecraft developed by the US-based firm SpaceX to bring the International Space Station out of orbit after the end of its operational life in 2030.
The agency says it is crucial to prepare for the safe and responsible deorbit of the ISS in a controlled manner.
Following the beginning of the construction in 1998, crew members have conducted various research experiments since 2000.
It is now in orbit 400 kilometers above the Earth.
The deorbiting plan is to use SpaceX's Dragon, which is currently used for supply transportation, as a concept base for the new vehicle.
NASA says that "about half of it will be new design, new development and 100 percent of the new deorbit functionality."
It says lowering the ISS will take time and that engines of the new deorbiting vehicle, being docked to the station, will be used to lower the station's orbit to make atmospheric re-entry.
NASA says as some elements of the station could survive burning when re-entering the atmosphere, the trajectory will be controlled to target unpopulated ocean areas to avoid any risk to the public.
It says the South Pacific is one of the potential locations.
The contract with SpaceX for developing the new spaceship is said to have a total value of 843 million dollars.

S.Korea's first lady questioned by prosecutors over luxury bag scandal
South Korean media say prosecutors have questioned the wife of President Yoon Suk-yeol over allegations that she illegally received a luxury handbag and other gifts.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office reportedly questioned first lady Kim Keon-hee at a government building on Saturday for about 12 hours.
Kim is reportedly suspected of illegally receiving the handbag worth some 3 million won, or about 2,150 dollars, among other gifts, from a Korean American pastor in September 2022.
Prosecutors are also believed to have questioned her over separate allegations of stock price manipulation involving an imported car dealer before Yoon took office.
Yoon apologized in May for causing concern over what he described as the "unwise conduct" of his wife.
The series of allegations involving the first lady is seen as one of the reasons for the public's growing distrust of the Yoon administration.
The opposition camp has severely criticized her, and called for an investigation by a special counsel.

Aquarium damaged by January 1 earthquake reopens in central Japan
An aquarium in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, has reopened about six months after a powerful earthquake devastated the region on January 1 this year.
A ceremony was held on Saturday in the city of Nanao to reopen the Notojima Aquarium.
The facility had been forced to suspend operations after its water circulating equipment and pipes were damaged. About 4,000 creatures perished in the quake, including whale sharks that were popular among visitors.
As reconstruction efforts progressed, penguins, sea turtles and other creatures were returned after being evacuated to other facilities.
Aquarium officials say dolphins and sea lions remain at their evacuation sites to avoid being transported in the summer heat.
Until the resumption of shows featuring dolphins and sea lions, a discount admission fee of 1,000 yen, or about 6 dollars, for senior high school students and above is in effect. Younger visitors can enter free of charge.
People with children were seen taking photographs.
A woman visiting with a child said that she is glad the aquarium has reopened as they used to come every month before the quake. She said she wants to see the facility restored to its original state.
Aquarium director Sakaidani Hitoshi says he is happy to see visitors enjoying themselves. He says he and his staff want to do more to restore full operations.
