Democrats plan virtual vote to nominate Biden ahead of the national convention

US media say the Democratic Party plans to hold a virtual vote ahead of the national convention in August to officially make President Joe Biden its nominee.

The move comes as some people, including Democratic lawmakers, call on Biden to step aside from the presidential race following a TV debate in June in which he gave a shaky performance.

US media outlets reported that the Democratic National Committee on Wednesday notified members of the plan to nominate Biden in an online roll call between August 1 and 7.

The procedures usually take place at a national party convention. But the committee announced in May that it planned for an early virtual nomination to ensure Biden would be on the ballot in the state of Ohio.

Some Democratic lawmakers have voiced their opposition to moving up the nomination.

They say extraordinary procedures could be perceived as curtailing legitimate debate or attempting to force an early resolution of the party nomination.

J.D. Vance accepts Republican vice-presidential nomination

US Senator J.D. Vance has accepted the Republican vice-presidential nomination on the third day of the party's national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The 39-year-old running mate of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gave his acceptance speech on Wednesday.

Vance began by referring to the assassination attempt on Trump. He praised the former president, saying, "When Donald J. Trump rose to his feet in that Pennsylvania field, all of America stood with him."

He said Trump has called for national unity, and he wants to respond to this call for unity himself.

Vance reflected on his experience of growing up in an area where many families lived in poverty, and stressed the need to promote Trump's "America First" policy.

He criticized President Joe Biden's economic policy, saying the US is "flooded with cheap Chinese goods and cheap foreign labor."

Referring to security issues, Vance said the US will make its allies share in the burden of securing world peace. He added, "No more free rides for nations that betray the generosity of the American taxpayer."

Vance is the author of "Hillbilly Elegy," the 2016 bestselling memoir about his upbringing in Ohio and the lives of white working-class Americans in a Rust Belt state.

He was first elected to the Senate in the 2022 midterm elections.

China suspends nuclear arms control talks with US

China's foreign ministry says talks on nuclear arms control with the United States will be suspended due to US sales of weapons to Taiwan.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian announced the suspension of the talks between senior officials of the two countries at a news conference on Wednesday.

The governments of the two countries resumed the talks last November, when a summit meeting was held in the United States. But no progress has been reported since then, and the US side has accused China of not coming to the negotiating table.

The spokesperson said ignoring China's firm opposition, the US side has continued to sell arms to Taiwan and seriously undermined China's core interests, damaging the political atmosphere necessary for continued arms control consultations.

The spokesperson said the US side bears full responsibility.

Beijing is apparently trying to keep Washington in check as it continues to sell weapons such as suicide drones to Taiwan, where the government of President Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party was launched in May.

Iran to receive natural gas from Russia

The Iranian government says the country has agreed on a contract to receive a large amount of natural gas from Russia.

Iran's state-run news agency says Iranian oil minister Javad Owji announced on Wednesday that the National Iranian Gas Company and Russian state-affiliated energy giant Gazprom have signed documents for the gas deal.

Russian gas supplies are expected to be consumed in Iran as well as exported to neighboring countries.

Iran has one of the world's largest natural gas reserves. But it lacks funds to maintain facilities and carry out new drilling due to economic sanctions by the US and other factors.

The Middle Eastern country experienced shortages of gas necessary for power generation during peak times in the summer and winter.

The amount of gas transported per year under the agreement is expected to be equivalent to a third of Iran's annual production, and worth up to 12 billion dollars.

European countries have significantly reduced their dependence on Russian gas in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The latest agreement could invite backlash from these countries.

Incoming Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is set to take office on July 28, has indicated he will seek to improve ties with Western nations while maintaining friendly relations with Russia.

Bangkok hotel deaths may be related to investment dispute

Thai police say they have information that six foreign nationals who were found dead from suspected poisoning in a luxury hotel room in Bangkok were embroiled in a dispute over money.

Police said the six people were apparently involved in a deal to build a hospital in Japan. The dispute concerned an investment of about 280,000 US dollars.

The bodies of the three men and three women of Vietnamese descent in their 30s to 50s were found in the central Bangkok hotel on Tuesday.

In a Wednesday news conference, police revealed that autopsies found a poisonous chemical in the six bodies. They said the same substance was found in cups in the room that the six are believed to have drank from.

Investigators said the bodies had no obvious wounds and there were no signs of struggle in the room. They added that no evidence was found to indicate the involvement of anyone else.

LDP lawmaker Horii investigated over alleged illegal donations

Tokyo prosecutors have raided the offices of Lower House member Horii Manabu of the Liberal Democratic Party over allegations that he repeatedly made illegal donations.

Investigators entered Horii's offices in Tokyo and Hokkaido on Thursday morning.

Sources with knowledge of the matter say Horii, from the proportional representation bloc in Hokkaido, gave condolence money to several people in his constituency about two years ago.

Horii reportedly asked his secretary or a family member to bring condolence money to a wake or funeral that he did not attend.

Under Japan's public office election law, politicians can only give condolence money in their constituency if they attend the funeral service in person and directly hand over the payment.

Horii is also said to have sent funeral flowers in his constituency.

The illegal donations could total thousands of dollars.

Tokyo prosecutors learned of these acts during their investigation into LDP factions' political fundraiser revenues.

Horii allegedly received reports and gave instructions through the Line messaging app on who to give money to and the amounts when he traveled outside Hokkaido.

Horii resigned as State Minister of the Cabinet Office when it was revealed that he had failed to report 21.96 million yen, or about 140,800 dollars, in fundraiser ticket revenue kickbacks from the LDP's Abe faction over a five-year period through 2022.

He is facing criminal complaint on suspicion of violating the political funds control law.

US media reports say "Shogun" is the second non-English language production to be nominated for outstanding drama series, after South Korea's "Squid Game" in 2022.
