Biden works to revive his campaign at battleground state rally
US President Joe Biden has reiterated that he will stay on despite growing calls from within his own Democratic Party to drop out of November's presidential election.
On Friday, Biden held a rally in the Midwestern state of Michigan, where a close race is expected between him and his Republican rival, former president Donald Trump.
Biden brushed aside speculation about whether he will stay in the race or if he will lose if he does, saying, "I'm running and we're going to win."
He also spoke about the media's heavy coverage of a slip of the tongue he made at a news conference on Thursday when he mistakenly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as Trump.
Biden said, "People would rather talk about how I mix up names" and pointed out that Trump confused former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The Biden campaign says about 2,000 supporters at the rally were chanting, "Don't you quit!"
Outside the rally venue, some Democratic voters called on Biden to drop out.
Biden spoke forcefully at the rally in an apparent attempt to show that he is fit for reelection.

EU says X is in violation of Digital Services Act in preliminary findings
The European Commission has issued preliminary findings that Elon Musk's social media service X violates EU law by misleading users about the credibility of accounts.
The European Union's executive body announced on Friday that the blue check mark on X, formerly Twitter, is in violation of the Digital Services Act. The act requires leading technology firms to take measures against fake information and illegal content.
Before Musk took over Twitter, the mark was used to verify that Twitter accounts of influential people and organizations were authentic. But now any paid subscriber who has met certain conditions can get one.
The Commission says, "Since anyone can subscribe to obtain such a 'verified' status, it negatively affects users' ability to make free and informed decisions about the authenticity of the accounts and the content they interact with."
It also says there is evidence of "malicious actors abusing the 'verified account' to deceive users."
X has a chance to challenge the preliminary views.
If X is ultimately found in breach of EU law, it can be hit with fines of up to as much as 6 percent of its global annual turnover.
The preliminary findings are the Commission's first related to suspected violation of the Digital Services Act.
Musk responded by posting a comment saying, "We look forward to a very public battle in court, so that the people of Europe can know the truth."
He also posted that, "The European Commission offered X an illegal secret deal: if we quietly censored speech without telling anyone, they would not fine us. The other platforms accepted that deal. X did not."
The Commission has denied the allegation, saying: "There has never been, and will never be, any 'secret deal.' With anyone."

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket fails in second stage
US company SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket experienced failure, leaving it unable to deploy internet satellites into its intended orbit.
The unmanned rocket carrying the satellites lifted off from the US state of California on Thursday.
The company says the rocket's first stage performed normally, but a liquid oxygen leak developed in the second stage. As a result, it says the satellites were deployed into a lower than intended orbit.
SpaceX expects the satellites will re-enter Earth's atmosphere and burn up. The company says they do not pose a threat to other satellites in orbit or to public safety.
US media say this is the first failure of a Falcon 9 rocket since 2016, when one exploded during an engine firing test, destroying a satellite loaded on it.
SpaceX is looking into what caused the failure.
The US Federal Aviation Administration says it must complete its investigation and give approval before another Falcon 9 rocket launch.
Falcon 9 is SpaceX's mainstay rocket and has had a streak of more than 300 successful launches.

Xi keen to boost ties with South Pacific island nations
Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his intention to strengthen ties with the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu in talks with the leaders of the two South Pacific island nations.
China's foreign ministry says Xi held separate meetings with Jeremiah Manele of the Solomon Islands and Charlot Salwai of Vanuatu on Friday in Beijing.
Xi said China sincerely wants to help Pacific Island nations develop.
He also expressed China's readiness to further strengthen ties through development of rural areas and infrastructure.
Xi said China does not seek geopolitical spheres of influence and does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
The remark is seen as a dig at the United States, which is stepping up its involvement in the South Pacific.
China has been showering nations in the region with huge amounts of financial aid, as well as boosting cooperation in fields such as security.
Japan will host the 10th Pacific Islands summit next week. The leaders of 18 countries and territories will be coming, including the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
Observers say Beijing has been working to expand its influence in the region ahead of the summit.

Sao Paulo kicks off Japan Festival
The Brazilian city of Sao Paulo kicked off its annual Japan Festival on Friday. The event showcases traditional Japanese culture and cuisine.
Brazil is home to the largest community of people of Japanese descent outside Japan. The festival is said to be one of the world's largest of its kind.
The festival boasts about 300 stalls set up by Japanese firms operating in Brazil as well as by groups of people representing different prefectures.
Local Japanese delicacies available include seared bonito from Kochi Prefecture, western Japan. Another is "Miso-katsu," a rice bowl from Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, that's made up of a miso sauce-covered fried pork cutlet on a bed of rice.
Japanese dishes have become increasingly popular in Brazil in recent years.
This time the organizers have for the first time provided spaces where business people can directly display local specialties and traditional cuisines to importers and those in the Brazilian restaurant industry.
The chair of an association to promote the local specialties of Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, said he hopes to deliver good things from his prefecture and Japan to the people of Sao Paulo.
The Japan Festival runs through Sunday and is expected to draw about 190,000 visitors.

Fishing season for Hanasaki crab opens in northern Japan
The season's first catch of Hanasaki crab, a local specialty in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, has been unloaded at a port in Nemuro City.
The king crab species is harvested in waters off the coast of eastern Hokkaido's Nemuro Peninsula. The crab turns bright red when it is boiled and has a rich flavor.
Three boats unloaded their first catch of the crabs with shells about 10 centimeters wide at Hanasaki Port on Thursday, a day after the city's crab season opened.
The total haul was about 400 kilograms, just one-tenth of last year's inaugural catch.
The crabs fetched as much as about 24 dollars per kilogram at auction -- about 20 percent higher than last year.
Noting the haul was very small, a fisher said he is hoping for larger catches from now.
The amount of Hanasaki crabs unloaded in Nemuro City in recent years has fallen to 20 to 25 percent of the catch when it peaked about 30 years ago. The city is trying to restore the population by releasing artificially incubated baby crabs.
The city's Hanasaki crab season will continue until September 20.
