Trump makes public appearance after securing Republican presidential nomination

Donald Trump has been formally nominated the US Republican Party's presidential candidate -- two days after he survived an attempt on his life at a rally.

Trump appeared at the Republican National Convention as it kicked off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday.

It marked his first public appearance since he was shot and injured during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The former president waved and smiled at his supporters with a bandage on his injured right ear.

Trump won a majority of state delegates at the convention. Ohio Senator J.D. Vance was also nominated as his running mate for the November presidential election.

Vance is the author of "Hillbilly Elegy," a bestseller published in 2016. It is a memoir about his upbringing in Ohio, and the life of white working-class Americans in a Rust Belt state where manufacturing has declined.

The 39-year-old senator is known as a staunch supporter of Trump's "America First" policy.

Trump's policy agenda is also deeply reflected in the Republican Party platform approved at the convention.

It calls for stronger measures against immigration, and blanket tariffs on foreign imports.

Trump is due to deliver his acceptance speech on the final day of the convention on Thursday.

Biden administration to launch independent review of security at Trump rally

US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says an independent review will be launched into security arrangements at the campaign rally where former President Donald Trump was shot and injured.

The suspected shooter is believed to have fired shots from the roof of a building near the rally's venue in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The Secret Service and other law enforcement authorities have come under criticism for allowing the man access to a place where he had a full view of the former president.

Mayorkas said on Monday that an independent review will be conducted at President Joe Biden's direction, and that the findings will be made public.

Mayorkas said it "will examine the Secret Service's and other law enforcement actions before, during and after the shooting, to identify the immediate and longer-term corrective actions required to ensure that the no-fail mission of protecting national leaders is most effectively met."

The homeland security secretary also said the Secret Service will provide protection to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Senator J.D. Vance, who Trump has named as his choice for vice president.

Biden disputes criticism that his comments incited Trump's assassination attempt

US President Joe Biden has disputed criticism from some Republicans that his comments incited the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Biden was interviewed by NBC News anchor Lester Holt on Monday.

In response to the criticism about his comments, Biden argued about the difficulty of discussing the threat to democracy. He said: "Do you just not say anything because it may incite somebody? Look, I have not engaged in that rhetoric."

Holt noted that Biden had said a week ago that "it's time to put Trump in the bullseye." When asked about the term "bullseye," Biden said, "It was a mistake to use the word."
Biden explained that he meant to say that they should focus on Trump's policies and the number of lies the former president told in the debate.

Biden criticized Trump's language as "inflammatory" and said he will "continue to talk about the things that matter to the American public."

China, Russia launch joint military exercise in South China Sea

The Chinese and Russian navies have launched a joint military exercise in the South China Sea, in an apparent bid to keep the United States and the Philippines in check.

China's defense ministry says a three-day drill began on Monday in the waters around Zhanjiang in the southern province of Guangdong.

The ministry says the participating fleet includes a missile destroyer and two frigates, and that the aim is to unify the command of the two forces.

The Russian defense ministry announced on Monday that two corvettes from the Pacific Fleet will join the training. It said the two navies will carry out air defense, anti-submarine and other drills.

In May, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Beijing. They signed a joint statement that includes deepening military cooperation, such as expanding the scale of joint military drills.

The latest move comes as the United States steps up its involvement in the South China Sea. The exercise is also apparently aimed at putting pressure on the Philippines over the waters where Beijing and Manila have territorial disputes.

Key Chinese Communist Party meeting opens on Monday

A key four-day meeting of China's Communist Party opens on Monday to decide long-term economic policies.

The third plenary session of the party's Central Committee will be held in Beijing through Thursday.

The party says participants will discuss key policies under two major themes, "overall deepening of reforms" and "promotion of Chinese-style modernization."

The meeting will be held behind closed doors. A communique is scheduled to be released on Thursday.

All eyes will be on what kind of policies the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping will set forth amid growing uncertainty over the country's economic prospects.

China's property market has been in a slump, and domestic demand remains sluggish.

Attention is also focused on whether there will be a reshuffle of those in senior party posts. A media outlet in Hong Kong says Cabinet ministers who have been fired -- former foreign minister Qin Gang and former defense minister Li Shangfu -- may be removed from the Central Committee.
