France votes on Sunday, Macron could face tough result

French voters will go to polling stations on Sunday for the first round of choosing representatives for the lower house, the National Assembly.

President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the parliament and called a snap election following the defeat earlier this month of his centrist coalition to the far-right National Rally in the European Union's parliamentary elections.

Macron's party and its coalition partners, the National Rally and the newly formed leftist New Popular Front alliance, are vying for votes.

The National Rally is expected to take the lead. It supports a nationalistic policy and tighter regulations on immigration. It's been saying that it is ready to govern the country.

Macron asserts that a government under the National Rally would cause a national crisis in France.

A public opinion poll released on Friday suggests that the National Rally and candidates with ties to the party could win as many as 265 seats, or triple its number before the election.

The survey shows that the New Popular Front alliance could win as many as 200 seats to become the second largest force in the lower house.

Macron's centrist coalition may end up with 100 seats at most, losing more than half of its seats.

The results of the first round will come in on Sunday evening and the second round will be held on July 7.

North Korea denounces Japan-US-South Korea joint military exercises

North Korea has denounced a large-scale joint military exercise by Japan, the United States and South Korea, warning such action could lead to "fatal consequences."

The three countries carried out the "Freedom Edge" exercise for three days through Saturday in waters including the East China Sea, with the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt taking part. Seven types of drills were held, including a missile defense operation at sea and response to a cyberattack.

The North's Foreign Ministry said via the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Sunday that it strongly denounces the three countries for their "provocative military muscle-flexing."

The ministry branded the trilateral security cooperation as "the Asian version of NATO."

In an apparent reference to Pyongyang's ties with Russia and China, the statement vowed to further strengthen "mutual cooperation and concerted action" so as to deter "the hostile forces' collective military intervention."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly delivered what state media called an "important" speech at a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee on Saturday. The report did not include any details.

Focus is on whether Kim mentioned the country's nuclear and missile development programs in the fourth year of its five-year defense plan, or if he made any remarks on what posture Pyongyang will take toward the US and South Korea.

Kim Jong Un portrait badge confirmed for first time

North Korean media have published photos of senior officials wearing badges featuring the portrait of leader Kim Jong Un at a key meeting of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee.

This is the first confirmation of such badges, indicating accelerated efforts to iconize Kim in the North.

The Sunday edition of the party's newspaper, Rodong Sinmun carried photos from the second day of the plenary meeting.

The images show senior officials giving speeches while wearing the badges on their chests.

It is compulsory in North Korea to wear portrait pins to express loyalty to the leadership. So far, these badges have mainly featured Kim's grandfather, Kim Il Sung, and father, Kim Jong Il.

North Korean media last month showed a portrait of the current leader displayed alongside those of his two predecessors at a party cadre training school.

Kim Jong Un is believed to have turned 40 in January. More than a decade has passed since he became North Korea's leader.

Ohtani Shohei hits 26th homer of the season

Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Dodgers has hit his 26th homerun of the season in a 14-to-7 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Ohtani batted first in the lineup as a designated hitter in the Saturday game that went to extra innings.

In the third inning, the score was tied 1-1. Ohtani slammed a slider over center field in his second at-bat.

The solo homer came off the bat at a speed of 176.5 kilometers per hour, and flew 125.5 meters. It was his first home run in two games.

Ohtani has widened his lead over the runner-up in the National League home run race to five.

He will reach 200 career home runs in Major League Baseball with three more homers. He is also one score away from becoming the third Japanese player to reach 500 RBIs in MLB career.

Japan to offer foreign students help with high school entrance tests

Japan's education ministry has instructed public senior high schools across the country to provide special considerations for foreign applicants in taking entrance exams.

In a notice issued for the regional education boards, the ministry compiled steps to be taken to help foreign nationals applying for senior high schools.

The ministry cites the importance for children from abroad to receive proper senior high school education to become independent citizens in Japanese society.

The notice calls for setting up special quotas for such applicants. It also calls for allowing them to use dictionaries during the tests and providing phonetic hiragana characters beside more difficult kanji characters in their test sheets to help them read the questions.

A survey conducted by the ministry in 2021 shows more than 47,000 children lacked adequate Japanese language skills ---an 80-percent increase in the space of about ten years.

Officials say they issued the notice because only a limited number of schools have introduced special quotas or other measures for foreign applicants.

Crackdown on speech intensifies in Hong Kong under national security laws

Sunday marks four years since China's national security law for Hong Kong went into effect. The legislation is designed to crack down on anti-government activity.

The suppression of free speech intensified this year after a local ordinance to complement the law came into force in March.

The security legislation took effect on June 30, 2020, about a year after massive dissident protests erupted in Hong Kong.

Under the law, pro-democracy politicians and activists have been arrested, and anti-government rallies and demonstrations have been restricted.

Last month, 14 pro-democracy activists were convicted for their alleged violation of the law. They are among 47 activists, including former pro-democracy legislators, who were charged with subversion three years ago.

Court proceedings continue for the other defendants, effectively extending their detention.

A local ordinance that took effect in March criminalizes espionage and interference by foreign entities. It also stipulates stricter punishment for acts that instigate hatred against the Chinese government.

Earlier this month, a man was charged with violating the law for allegedly wearing a T-shirt with a slogan used in the 2019 protests.

Hong Kong's security authorities told NHK that over the past four years 299 people have been arrested for allegedly endangering national security.

Zelenskyy mentions 'comprehensive plan' by year's end to end conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that a plan to end the conflict with Russia will be prepared by the end of this year.

He said on Friday in Kyiv that "it is very important for us to show a plan to end the war that will be supported by the majority of the world."

Zelenskyy stressed the importance of resisting the Russian aggression by force, while preparing the plan for peace.

He said that "to be strong on the battlefield and to develop a clear, detailed plan" should be done in parallel.

He did not talk about the details. There is speculation that the plan could spark discussions at future gatherings of international leaders on bringing peace to Ukraine.

Russia, on the other hand, is demanding that Ukraine withdraw its forces from the four regions that Moscow unilaterally annexed as a condition for starting peace talks.

Israel trades fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon while attacking Gaza

Tensions have been mounting in the Middle East as Israeli forces trade fire with Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon while continuing fierce attacks in Gaza.

Clashes have intensified in recent weeks between Israel and Hezbollah, a Shia militant group backed by Iran.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Friday, "We aren't looking for a war, but we're ready for one."

Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations said on social media that should Israel "embark on full-scale military aggression, an obliterating war will ensue. All options, including the full involvement of all Resistance Fronts, are on the table."

On Saturday, the Israeli military said it identified anti-tank projectiles crossing from Lebanon, and struck the sources of fire.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have again carried out operations in northern Gaza, where they had claimed to have taken control, as well as in Rafah in the south. They said that they eliminated a large number of terrorists and located a weapons storage facility within a school compound.

Local media reported Israeli warplanes bombed a house in northern Gaza City, leaving several civilians dead and others wounded.

The United Nations said on Friday that the Israeli military ordered people in northern Gaza to immediately evacuate. It said its "humanitarian partners estimate that at least 60,000 people were displaced from this area."

Health authorities in Gaza say that the number of deaths in the enclave has risen to 37,834 since fighting began last October.

New York Times editorial calls on Biden to drop out of presidential race

The New York Times in an editorial has called on US President Joe Biden to drop out of this year's presidential race, pointing to his "uneven abilities" following a televised debate.

The leading US newspaper on Friday published an editorial titled, "To serve his country, President Biden should leave the race."

During Thursday's debate with former president Donald Trump, Biden's voice turned hoarse. He was lost for words for several seconds and frequently struggled to counter Trump's criticism.

Biden's performance reportedly prompted some Democrats to express doubts about appointing him as their nominee.

The New York Times editorial says that given the danger Trump poses, the stakes for the country and Biden's uneven abilities, the US needs a stronger opponent to the presumptive Republican nominee.

It says, "To make a call for a new Democratic nominee this late in a campaign is a decision not taken lightly."

But it says that the clearest path for Democrats is to acknowledge that Biden cannot continue his race, and create a process to select someone more capable to stand in his place to defeat Trump in November.

Biden, meanwhile, has vowed to fight on. He said in the southern state of North Carolina on Friday, "When you get knocked down, you get back up."

The focus now is on whether the editorial of a newspaper read by many Democrats puts more pressure on Biden to withdraw from the election.

US supreme court rules on Capitol riot charge

The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that a charge brought by federal prosecutors against hundreds of rioters who stormed the Capitol three years ago -- "obstruction of an official proceeding" -- may not be applicable to all the defendants.

The justices ruled that an "obstruction" refers to actions that "impair the availability or integrity" of "records, documents, or objects" used in an official proceeding. They say the Justice Department overstepped in their use of the statute and that lower courts need to reopen some of the cases.

Prosecutors argue that the presence of some of the rioters inside the Capitol while Congress was in session was an "obstruction." A second part of the statute says the law applies to whoever "obstructs, influences, or impedes" any official proceeding.

Still, Friday's ruling will require them to link a defendant's actions to trying to tamper with or destroy documents.

Former president Donald Trump is facing the same charge. He claimed he won the 2020 election and, just before the riot, called on his supporters to "fight like hell."

He posted on social media that the ruling is a "big win." Addressing supporters at a rally in Chesapeake, Virginia, he claimed that the "persecution" is happening because he is running for president and is leading in "all of the polls."

Trump has said he should be immune from prosecution for any "official acts" during his tenure in the White House. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on that issue on Monday, when it releases the final opinions of its current term.

Mongolia's governing party wins majority in parliamentary election

Mongolia's ruling party has won a majority in a parliamentary election that is held every four years.

Major issues in Friday's election included economic policy and anti-corruption measures.

The number of parliamentary seats has been increased to 126 from 76 in the previous election four years ago.

Media reports say preliminary results released early Saturday morning show the governing Mongolia People's Party won 68 seats.

The opposition Democratic Party won 42 seats, followed by the HUN Party at 8.

The Mongolia People's Party has ruled the country since 2016. In 2020, it won 80 percent of the parliamentary seats, but only secured about half the number in this election.

The party is expected to retain its diplomatic policy that is designed to strike a balance between its two major neighbors, China and Russia, as well as maintain close ties with Japan, which the party calls Mongolia's "third neighbor". The party will also likely maintain a friendly relationship with North Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is considering visiting Mongolia when he visits Kazakhstan in August.

If Kishida travels to the country, he and Mongolian officials will likely discuss bilateral cooperation and the abduction of Japanese nationals by North Korea.

UN Security Council members express concerns over new Russia-N.Korea treaty

Members of the United Nations Security Council have expressed concerns about a new treaty signed between Russia and North Korea that strengthens bilateral military cooperation.

The council convened an emergency meeting on Friday at the request of Japan, the United States and other countries.

The new treaty between Moscow and Pyongyang stipulates that if either of them is placed under a state of war, the other will provide military and other assistance.

UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Nakamitsu Izumi noted that the transfer of weapons from North Korea violates Security Council resolutions.

She said all countries, including Russia, "must fully abide by the relevant Security Council sanctions" on North Korea.

Japan's UN Ambassador Yamazaki Kazuyuki said Japan "condemns in the strongest possible terms" North Korea's export of ballistic missiles to Russia in violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, as well as Moscow's use of those missiles in Ukraine. He added that the transfer of these weapons will "exacerbate the situation in Ukraine."

Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, called the speculation about Russia using North Korean missiles in Ukraine untrue.

Nebenzia also said the Russia-North Korea treaty is "intended to play a stabilizing role in North-East Asia against the background of an unprecedented escalation of tension."

He criticized the US for increasing its military activity in the region.

North Korea's UN envoy, Kim Song, echoed the view. He said there is no reason to be concerned about this treaty if there is no intention to invade North Korea and Russia.

Emperor, Empress wrap UK visit with stop at Oxford

Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako wrapped up their visit to Britain with a stop at Oxford University, where they both studied in their younger days.

The couple toured the grounds of Balliol College on Friday. The Empress studied there for two years during her time working with the Foreign Ministry.

The Imperial couple later attended a luncheon hosted by the university's chancellor, and a ceremony where an honorary degree was granted to the Empress.

The Emperor also studied at Oxford for two years, in Merton College.
The experience of living with 150 other students in the dorms apparently had a major impact on his life. In a memoir, he wrote that he enjoyed a degree of freedom he couldn't experience in Japan, going out to pubs and discos with his friends.

The Emperor thanked the British people for their kind words and hospitality.

He said: "I feel like I returned to the place that existed in my memories. I was happy to hear so many people say, 'Welcome back!' Britain is also a nostalgic place for Masako, so we are very glad to be here together."

The Emperor also said he hopes their visit will strengthen the friendship between Japan and Britain.

The Imperial couple are now on their way back to Japan.

Biden, Trump trade barbs in 1st televised debate before US presidential election

US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump fiercely attacked each other in their first televised debate before the presidential election scheduled for November.

The debate between the two presumptive nominees -- Biden for the Democratic Party and Trump for the Republican Party -- was held in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday.

The faceoff between the pair was their first since the last presidential election in 2020.

The first topic in the 90-minute debate was on inflation. Biden said Trump left him a "terrible" economy when he took over office in 2021. He said the jobless rate shot up to 15 percent at the time, and that he created jobs, ensured employment and brought things back.

Trump said the only jobs Biden created were for illegal immigrants and "bounce-back" jobs from after COVID. He said that recent inflation under Biden is "absolutely killing us."

Trump said Russia's attack on Ukraine would not have happened if he were president. He said Russian President Vladimir Putin would have never invaded Ukraine if the United States "had a real president, a president that knew that was respected by Putin."

Biden said in contrast that he has won support from 50 other countries, including Japan, in supporting Ukraine to fight against Russia's invasion.

The candidates also discussed other major issues, at times accusing each other as being "the worst president" in history.

Some US media reports said Biden lacked strength and stability, as he spoke in a hoarse voice and stumbled over his words.

Torrential rain continues in some parts of Japan, triggering major flood and landslide warnings. Officials earlier issued a maximum level-five alert for residents living along the river in Shizuoka Prefecture's Iwata City.

They were urged to stay on the upper level of buildings. The order was later lifted in most areas.

Japan Central Railway says bullet train service has resumed between Shin-Fuji and Shizuoka station, after it was temporarily suspended.

A mudslide alert has been issued in Shizuoka, Nagano and Kagoshima prefectures.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says warm moist air flowing into the rain front and a low pressure system are making atmospheric conditions in western and eastern Japan extremely unstable.

Rain is forecast through Friday and Saturday morning with up to 200 millimeters expected in the Tokai and Kinki regions, and 180 millimeters in southern Kyushu.

Sources: US Marine indicted over alleged sexual assault attempt in Okinawa

Investigative sources say prosecutors in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture indicted a member of the US Marine Corps earlier this month for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a woman and injuring her.

Prefectural officials and investigators say the 21-year-old Marine Lance Corporal was indicted by the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office on June 17, after being arrested in May for allegedly trying to assault an adult woman and injuring her.

They say the woman resisted and the Marine left the scene, but the police found him after receiving a call and arrested him outside a US military base.

It came to light earlier this week that a US Air Force member based in Okinawa was indicted in March for the alleged kidnap and sexual assault of an underage girl last December.

On Thursday, the vice governor of Okinawa lodged a protest with the US forces in Japan over the December incident, saying it is causing concern for people who are forced to live next to US bases in Okinawa.

The vice governor also protested the delay in notifying the prefecture about the incident.

Okinawa Governor Tamaki Denny spoke to reporters on Friday about the latest case involving the US Marine Corps. He said that he feels anger beyond description.

He also pointed to the need to review a communication system for notifying the prefecture about incidents involving US military personnel.

Okinawa, where about 70 percent of the US military facilities in Japan are concentrated, has seen a number of incidents involving US military personnel. Protests about the situation are likely to intensify after the recently revealed allegations of sexual assaults in the prefecture.

Hayashi made the comment when speaking to reporters on Friday.

He said the government took seriously the fact that a sexual crime alleged to have been carried out by a US service member followed a case involving a US Air Force member last December.

Hayashi said that Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Okano Masataka conveyed regret over the matter to US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, and called for stricter discipline and thorough measures to prevent a recurrence.

Hayashi said he believes the US side is taking the matter extremely seriously.

He also said incidents and accidents involving US military personnel cause great anxiety for local people and should never happen. He said the government will continue to call on the US side to take thorough preventative steps.

Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru said on Friday that the head of the ministry's Bureau of Local Cooperation conveyed regret to the commander of US forces in Japan and called for stricter discipline and thorough measures to prevent a recurrence.

He said the ministry will take every opportunity to call on the US for thorough preventive measures.

Kihara did not disclose when the ministry's call to the US side was made, citing relations with the US and investigative agencies.

Iranian voters cast ballots in presidential election on Friday

Voters in Iran are heading to the polls on Friday to choose their next president. The election is a de facto three-man contest, with two hardline conservatives and a reformist.

The vote was called to pick a successor to Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline conservative who died in a helicopter crash last month.

The Guardian Council, a panel of Islamic jurists and other members, approved the candidacies of six people. But two of them withdrew.

The three major contestants are two hardline conservatives who do not mind being confrontational toward Western countries, and a reformist who seeks dialogue.

One of the hardline candidates is Saeed Jalili. He was secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, a body in charge of national defense and foreign affairs.

The other hardliner is parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who belonged to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The two are battling for support among conservative voters.

The reformist candidate is Masoud Pezeshkian, who was deputy parliamentary speaker and health minister. He is trying to win over voters unhappy with hardline conservative policies.

Preliminary results are expected as early as Saturday. If none of the candidates gains a majority, a runoff will take place on July 5 between the top two finishers.

Report: N.Korea executed resident for watching and sharing S.Korean culture

South Korea has released a report on North Korea that cites a defector as saying that a North Korean resident was publicly executed for sharing South Korean movies and music.

South Korea's Unification Ministry released the report on Thursday. It outlines human rights conditions in North Korea, based on testimonies obtained from more than 600 North Korean defectors.

One defector reportedly witnessed the public execution of a 22-year-old resident in South Hwanghae Province in southwestern North Korea in 2022. The punishment was purportedly based on a law adopted four years ago that calls for eradicating "the reactionary ideology and culture."

The defector reportedly heard a person who appeared to be a judge say at the execution site that the resident had listened to 70 South Korean songs and three South Korean movies, and shared them with other people.

The report says other practices deemed "reactionary" include brides wearing white dresses and grooms carrying brides at weddings. Wearing sunglasses and drinking wine from a wine glass would also trigger a crackdown.

The report says North Korean authorities are stepping up ideological controls and are especially nervous about people being exposed to and influenced by South Korean dramas and other outside culture.

Japan, US, South Korea hold trilateral exercise

Japan's Defense Ministry has announced the start of a trilateral exercise with the United States and South Korea on Thursday in the East China Sea.

The Defense Ministry says Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the US and South Korean militaries are holding the exercise -- called Freedom Edge -- through Saturday.

Seven naval vessels from the three countries, including the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, are taking part along with fighter jets and patrol aircraft.

The exercise will include drills to counter ballistic missiles, submarines and cyberattacks.

The ministry says the aim is to ensure peace and stability in the Indo Pacific, including the Korean Peninsula, by improving interoperability among the three countries and demonstrating their will to protect freedom.

The drills are seen to be aimed at showcasing trilateral cooperation to countries such as North Korea and China.

North Korea has been repeatedly launching missiles.

The start of the exercise comes as Japan's Defense Ministry is keeping a close watch on North Korea after it fired a ballistic missile on Wednesday.

North Korea had warned it would take countermeasures in response to the arrival of the USS Theodore Roosevelt at a South Korean port last weekend.

Vice Governor Ikeda Takekuni met on Thursday with Brigadier General Nicholas Evans, commander of the 18th Wing at US Kadena Air Base, and other US officials at the prefectural government office.

Evans did not apologize for the incident, but said, "I'm deeply concerned by the severity of this allegation, and I regret any anxiety this has caused."

He promised the US military will fully cooperate with the investigation by local authorities and the legal process.

Ikeda said this is a serious and vicious incident that tramples on the rights of women, and is unforgivable.

He sought an apology and compensation for the victim, saying this is a worrying incident for people who are forced to live next to US bases in Okinawa.

Ikeda protested the fact the prefecture was not notified about the indictment that was made in March until it was contacted by the Foreign Ministry's Okinawa office on Tuesday.

Ikeda also demanded stricter implementation of curfew measures, a quick compilation and disclosure of preventive measures and thorough education and management of service personnel.

Also on Thursday, representatives from six civic groups in Okinawa called for the removal of all existing US bases and a ban on building new ones at a news conference at the prefectural government office.

Itokazu Keiko, who co-heads a group of women protesting bases and troops in Okinawa, said she feels heart-wrenching pain when she thinks about the terror and despair inflicted on the victim.

She criticized the Japanese and US governments, and the US forces in Okinawa, for promising to ease the burden of the bases while doing nothing about the actual situation, where the lives and livelihoods of the people in the prefecture are threatened by such serious and vicious crimes.

The representatives plan to soon ask Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and US President Joe Biden to take and disclose effective steps to address the issue of US bases in Okinawa, and to eliminate crimes by US military personnel and civilian employees.

Okinawa vice governor protests alleged sexual assault of minor by US airman

The vice governor of Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa has expressed strong anger over the indictment of a US Air Force member for the alleged kidnap and sexual assault of a girl under 16.

Suzhou Japanese school reopens after knife attack at school bus stop

A Japanese school in Suzhou City in China's eastern province of Jiangsu has been reopened after a knife attack at a school bus stop on Monday.

The school was closed following the incident, but it resumed classes on Wednesday after taking safety measures.

A man, believed to be Chinese, armed with a knife attacked the bus carrying students returning home when it arrived at the stop. A Japanese woman and her child, who were waiting at the stop, were wounded. A Chinese bus attendant was also stabbed. She is in critical condition.

Reuters news agency released footage believed to have been taken at the scene. It shows several people gathered around a person lying beside a yellow bus.

Japan's Consulate-General in Shanghai and other sources say that in April a Japanese man was stabbed by another man believed to be Chinese on a street several hundred meters from Monday's attack site. The street is lined with Japanese restaurants. The sources say the Japanese person suffered a minor injury to his neck.

Local authorities detained the man, but the motive for the attack has not been disclosed.

Emperor Naruhito attends banquet at City of London

Japan's Emperor Naruhito has attended a welcome banquet in London's financial district during his state visit to Britain.

Wednesday's dinner party at the Guildhall was held by representatives of the City of London and others. About 650 people participated in the event, including Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh.

Emperor Naruhito said in his speech the citizens of Japan and the UK have made bold efforts to solve challenges, building on the achievements of their predecessors and flexibly embracing new technologies.

Emperor Naruhito said: "It will be a source of great pleasure to us if our visit to the United Kingdom can provide a chance for the people of both countries to reconfirm their bonds of friendship and goodwill, underpinned by the long-standing people-to-people connections, as well as an opportunity to pass on to the next generation the leadership role in resolving the challenges common to mankind."

Earlier, the Emperor also visited the Royal College of Music, one of the world's leading music universities. Over 900 students from some 50 countries study there.

Emperor Naruhito listened to a performance by students at a simulation facility that re-creates the acoustics and appearance of settings such as concert halls.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will wrap up their engagements as state guests with formal farewells to King Charles and Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace on Thursday morning.

Victims of sarin gas attack in Matsumoto City remembered 30 years on

Thursday marks 30 years since the Aum Shinrikyo cult carried out a deadly sarin gas attack in a residential area of Matsumoto City in central Japan.

The cult's former leader Asahara Shoko, whose real name was Matsumoto Chizuo, ordered the attack. Eight people were killed and at least 140 others were harmed by the toxic nerve gas.

People remembered the victims on the 30th anniversary at a park on the site of the incident. Many of them brought flowers.

A woman in her 50s came to offer prayers for a man who was her work supervisor. He died in a dormitory where the park now stands. She said it had been too painful for her to visit the place where he died, but she was finally able to come here after three decades.

A man in his 50s who lived in the neighborhood at the time said he often walked by the area. He said he hopes nothing like that will ever happen again.

A man in his 90s who lives nearby said religion is supposed to help people but it caused a tragedy. He said he can only pray for the repose of the victims' souls.

People can leave flowers at a stand in the park through Friday.

S.Korean military: North's missile launch likely failed

South Korea's military says that North Korea unsuccessfully test-fired a ballistic missile early on Wednesday and that it is analyzing the launch.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff say the missile was launched from an area in or around Pyongyang at about 5:30 a.m., but that the launch apparently failed. The missile was reportedly fired toward the Sea of Japan.

According to Yonhap News Agency, a military source said, "The North appears to have test-fired a hypersonic missile, but the test is believed to have ended in failure after the missile flew some 250 kilometers."

The military says the South Korean and US militaries are conducting a detailed analysis.

This is the first time that the North has fired a ballistic missile since May 30.

The launch comes after Pyongyang warned that it would take countermeasures in response to the arrival of a US aircraft carrier in Busan. The USS Theodore Roosevelt will take part in the inaugural trilateral Freedom Edge exercise. Japan, United States and South Korea are participating in the drill.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol inspected the vessel on Tuesday, which was the 74th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War.

North Korea's vice defense minister said in a statement on Monday that his country "condemns the provocative attempts" of the US and South Korea "with the most powerful rhetoric and with all possibilities of demonstrating its overwhelming and new deterrent force."

North Korea holds massive anti-US rally on Korean War anniversary

A massive anti-US rally was staged in North Korea on Tuesday, marking the 74th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Participants expressed their determination to strengthen Pyongyang's nuclear capabilities.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Wednesday that more than 100,000 people, including workers and students, took part in the rally at a stadium in Pyongyang.

The newspaper quoted one participant as saying that North Korea will multiply its strongest war deterrents by a hundredfold or a thousandfold to terminate those who stand in the way of the country's prominence.

The participants later marched with banners that read "Destroy the American invaders who are the sworn enemy of the Korean people."

North Korea is expected to hold a plenary meeting of its ruling Workers' Party Central Committee this week. It will be the first such meeting in six months.

Attention is focused on how leader Kim Jong Un will address his country's relations with Russia.

Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty last week that pledges mutual military assistance if either of their countries is placed under a state of war.

Observers will also be watching for Kim's remarks on the relaunch of military reconnaissance satellites as well as references to the United States and South Korea.

Zelenskyy replaces commander of Ukrainian armed forces

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has replaced the commander overseeing the Ukrainian military's joint forces in the war against Russia.

Zelenskyy announced in a video message on Monday that the post held by Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol would go to Brigadier General Andriy Hnatov.

Zelenskyy did not give a reason for the replacement, but Ukrainian media reports say some units have been increasingly critical of the heavy losses sustained by the military under Sodol.

The New York Times notes the move follows the dismissal of the highly popular then-commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, in February.

It says Zelenskyy's decisions continue to "threaten military cohesion."

Ukrainians have expressed hope that the personnel shake-up will help improve the situation on the eastern front, where Ukrainian forces are struggling.

A resident in the capital Kyiv told NHK on Tuesday that Ukrainians have a very strong enemy and that she hopes the changes will be for the better.

Security tight in Paris one month ahead of Olympics

With one month to go before the Paris Olympics, security has become a major challenge for the French capital.

About 10,000 athletes will parade for six kilometers on the River Seine aboard roughly 90 boats at the opening ceremony. More than 320,000 spectators are expected to line the riverbanks to see the parade.

Games organizers say this is the first time the opening ceremony of Summer Olympics will be held outside a sports venue.

To prevent terrorist attacks, Paris authorities plan to create security zones around the river from July 18, eight days before the ceremony.

Only spectators and Games-related officials will be allowed to enter the areas. People who live or work in the areas can apply for a pass on a special website and obtain a QR code, which they need to present to enter.

Authorities plan to mobilize 45,000 police and other security personnel on the day of the ceremony.

France raised its terror alert level to the highest nationwide in March. Police arrested a man from Chechnya, southern Russia, on suspicion of plotting an attack at an Olympic venue in central France in May.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told reporters on Friday that terrorism by Islamic extremists is a main concern.

Meanwhile, restaurants and other businesses in the designated areas are concerned that tight security could affect their operations.

A restaurant along the Seine, which has 200 seats including those on the terrace, says it has not decided whether to stay open during the Games, because customers need to apply for a pass and it remains unclear whether food will be delivered as usual.

Some local businesses are said to have decided to close down during the Games and are considering seeking compensation from local authorities.

The manager of the restaurant said the staff initially expected the Olympics to be a business opportunity, but the event will instead cause a great loss.

The manager also says authorities need to strike a balance between providing security and keeping restaurants and bars open.

About 170 people from Japan and the UK attended the dinner. King Charles used some Japanese phrases when he delivered his welcome speech.

King Charles said: "Welcome back to Britain. At the core of our partnership is a close friendship."

Emperor Naruhito responded to the King's speech by saying he hopes the UK visit will enable the friendship that exists between the two countries to be passed on to young people and children who will develop it even further.

Emperor Naruhito said: "It is my sincere hope that both Japan and the UK as friends like no other, will continue to make untiring efforts for true mutual understanding through exchanges of our people, thereby building an enduring relationship based on friendship, goodwill and cooperation."

This is the third time that an Emperor and an Empress from Japan have made a state visit to the UK.

Lotus grown from 200-year-old seed in full bloom at Kyoto's Byodoin Temple

The flowers of a lotus grown from a seed excavated from a layer of earth dating back about 200 years are now in full bloom at an ancient Buddhist temple in Kyoto Prefecture, western Japan.

Byodoin Temple in Uji City, dating back to the 11th Century in the late Heian Period, is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

The temple places pots of lotus flowers around its precinct at this time of the year. About 50 pots with pink and red blossoms are now on show.

One variety, called the Byodoin Temple Lotus, has successfully been grown from a seed obtained during excavation of a pond in the compound 25 years ago. Its flowers are white and have typically thin petals. The flowers are quite similar to those depicted on the ancient murals of Hou-ou-do, or Phoenix Hall, which is designated as a national treasure.

Temple officials said the flowers began to bloom last week. They added that many buds are being formed and the color of the flowers appears good.

Head priest Kamii Monsho said he hopes visitors who see the flowers will find them therapeutic.

The flowers can be enjoyed before the middle of next month.

Japanese schools in China tighten security after attack in Suzhou

Japanese schools in China are tightening their security following an attack on a bus carrying Japanese schoolchildren in Suzhou, eastern China.

The Japanese Consulate-General in Shanghai says a man, apparently armed with a knife, struck when the school bus arrived at a stop on Monday.

It says the vehicle was carrying students on their way home from a Japanese school in Suzhou.

Consular officials say a Japanese mother and her child were injured in the attack. They say a Chinese bus attendant was stabbed and is in critical condition.

The assailant is believed to be a Chinese national. He has reportedly been detained and is being questioned, but his motive remains unclear.

The school in Suzhou is closed on Tuesday.

The Japanese Embassy in Beijing says Japanese schools in Beijing, Shanghai and elsewhere in China are holding classes as usual, but have asked local authorities to tighten security. Parents are also being asked to watch over their children on their way to and from school.

In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa expressed regret over the incident and said he hopes for the early recovery of the victims.

Hayashi said the Consulate-General in Shanghai has asked local authorities to share information and take steps to prevent similar incidents.

He said consular officials from Shanghai have been sent to Suzhou to provide support to the people involved.

Hayashi said Japanese consulates across China have issued email alerts, urging Japanese nationals to be on the alert when going out.

Blaze at South Korea lithium battery plant kills 22

Twenty-two people have been confirmed dead in a fire that engulfed a lithium battery factory near Seoul, South Korea, on Monday.

Fire department officials said the blaze started after battery cells exploded one after another at the plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, citing information from witnesses. There were about 35,000 lithium batteries at the site.

They said the deceased included 18 Chinese, two South Koreans and one Laotian, but that the nationality of the one remaining victim has yet to be identified.

Most of the bodies were found on the second floor of the factory, where workers were examining and packaging products. Officials said the victims failed to escape, despite the existence of a staircase leading outside.

President Yoon Suk-yeol visited the site on Monday night. The president blamed the deaths on the existence of ignitable materials near an emergency exit, which he said kept workers inside from fleeing. He instructed officials to determine the cause of the incident and take steps to prevent a recurrence.

S.Korean president criticizes Russian-N.Korean treaty as 'anachronistic'

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has denounced a treaty recently signed by Russia and North Korea as "anachronistic" and stressed that his country will boost its defense capabilities.

Yoon made the remark on Tuesday in Daegu during a speech at a ceremony to mark the 74th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War.

He said that while his country has moved along on the path toward freedom and prosperity, North Korea has stuck to its retrogressive ways. He noted that the North has been developing its nuclear and missile capabilities and behaving in an irrationally provocative way by sending trash balloons to the South.

Yoon also referred to the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed last week by Russia and the North. It includes a pledge by the countries that they will mutually support each other militarily.

The president said the treaty blatantly violates UN Security Council resolutions. He described Pyongyang's actions as "anachronistic," and he said that they go "against the progress in history."

Yoon stressed that his country will boost its defense capabilities. He noted that the South will deter North Korea's provocations and protect freedom and peace by maintaining a robust security posture as well as its alliance with the United States and others that share its values.

The South Korean military said Pyongyang sent trash balloons to South Korea again from Monday through Tuesday.
It has determined that more than 350 of the balloons were sent. Over 100 of them reportedly dropped inside South Korea. The military said nothing dangerous has been found attached to the balloons.

North Korea has been flying the trash balloons into the South since last month.

The military said it is ready to respond to the North's actions. It has hinted that it may use loudspeakers near the military demarcation line between the Koreas to start broadcasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda messages again.

Russia may help N.Korea with nuclear, missile development, US warns

A senior US State Department official has warned that North Korea may get assistance for its nuclear and long-range missile development programs from Russia.

Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell was speaking on Monday at an event in Washington that was hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations, a US-based think tank.

Campbell noted that Pyongyang has provided Moscow with military assistance to help it continue its military operation in Ukraine.

He said, "We believe that there are discussions about what North Korea gets in exchange and it could be associated with its nuclear or long-range missile development plans, perhaps other things in energy."

Last week, the two nations signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty. It states that Russia or North Korea will provide the other with military assistance, if one of the countries is invaded and placed under a state of war.

Campbell expressed concerns about steps the two nations are taking to expand their military cooperation. He said that the US is carefully watching to see what will happen in the wake of the agreement.

The deputy secretary also said, "China is somewhat anxious about what's going on between Russia and North Korea."

He added, "China is probably worried that North Korea will be somehow encouraged to take provocative steps that could lead to a crisis in Northeast Asia."

Russia summons US ambassador over Crimea attack

Russia's government has summoned the US ambassador to Moscow to protest a deadly Ukrainian attack on Crimea, which it says employed US-supplied ATACMS missiles.

Russia's foreign ministry on Monday summoned US envoy Lynne Tracy over the attack, in which its defense ministry said five long-range ATACMS missiles equipped with cluster warheads were used.

Moscow-installed authorities in Sevastopol said the Sunday attack killed four people and injured 153, including children.

The foreign ministry told the envoy that the United States has actually become a party to the conflict by supplying Ukraine with the most advanced weapons.

The ministry also said the US bears "equal responsibility" with Ukraine for the attack. It warned that "retaliatory measures are certain to follow."

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak defended the attack, saying on Monday that Crimea is definitely a territory occupied by Russia and is the site of a full-scale war.

Meanwhile, authorities in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk said the town of Pokrovsk was hit with two Russian short-range Iskander missiles. At least four people were killed and 34 others, including children, injured, officials said.

State of emergency declared over wildfires in Brazil's Pantanal wetland

Brazilian researchers say a record high number of wildfires for June are burning in the Pantanal wetland, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Brazil's National Institute for Space Research has announced that 2,363 fires broke out in the wetland in the country from June 1 to 23. Most of the wetland is located in Brazil.

The researchers said the number was more than five times that observed in June 2005, when a record high for the month was posted. They blamed prolonged dry spells with little rainfall.

Local authorities declared a state of emergency for 180 days on Monday, saying that fires usually increase from July to September every year.

The wetland is home to diverse wildlife and one of the largest in the world, spanning Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay over roughly 200,000 square kilometers. Some of the area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Last year, Brazil suffered what was described as the worst drought on record in the Amazon River Basin.

At least 9 killed after gunmen fire on targets in Russian republic of Dagestan

Members of an armed group opened fire in two cities in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, resulting in a number of casualties.

Gunmen attacked a synagogue, two Orthodox churches and a police post in Derbent and Makhachkala on Sunday.

A Jewish organization says the attackers set fire to the synagogue. Video footage from the site shows the building in flames, with plumes of smoke rising from it.

Russian media reports say at least nine people, including police officers and those at the church, have been killed and many others injured.

It is not known what was behind the attack and nobody has claimed responsibility for it.

The Russian Investigative Committee has opened an investigation into what it believes to be a terrorist attack.

Last October, protesters in opposition to Israeli military attacks on the Gaza Strip stormed an airport in predominantly Muslim Dagestan when a passenger plane arrived from Israel.

Russian authorities have carried out counterterrorism operations in Dagestan and detained Islamic extremists following a terrorist attack at a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow in March.

Four killed in Ukraine missile attack on Crimea, Russia says

Russia-installed authorities of Sevastopol in Ukraine's southern region of Crimea say a Ukrainian missile strike on the port city has left four people dead and 144 others wounded. Russia claims to have annexed Crimea in 2014.

The Russian defense ministry says in a statement that the attack shortly after midday on Sunday involved five ATACMS missiles supplied by the United States to Ukraine.

The ministry says Russian air defense units intercepted four of the missiles equipped with cluster warheads but the fifth one exploded in mid-air.

The ministry says Washington is mostly responsible for the deliberate missile strike as it delivered the weapons to Ukraine. It adds that Ukraine is also to blame as the attack was launched from its territory.

The Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, is reportedly capable of precision strikes. US media outlets report that missiles launched by the system have a range of about 300 kilometers.

N.Korean official criticizes US for Kyiv's use of US weapons to hit Russian land

One of North Korea's top military officials has criticized the United States for allowing Ukraine to use US-supplied weapons to attack Russian territory from across the border.

Pak Jong Chon, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea, released a statement via the Korean Central News Agency on Monday.

The statement refers to Washington's decision to allow Kyiv to use US weapons for limited strikes inside Russian territory for the defense of eastern Ukraine.

Pak said the US move will inevitably provoke a stronger response from Russia, "resulting in an all-out military conflict with Russia and a new world war, the worst-ever consequences."

He went on to stress North Korea's stance in siding with Moscow, saying "it will be a just action for legitimate self-defense" for Russia to make a strategic counterattack.

Pak attended the summit on June 19 between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who visited the North for the first time in 24 years.

Pak's statement is apparently intended to underscore the growing military ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.

During Putin's visit, the two leaders signed a new treaty that includes a pledge for mutual military support.

The Emperor browsed around its ground floor, where visitors can buy food, traditional crafts and other products from Japan.

The items on offer include Wajima-nuri lacquerware from Ishikawa Prefecture. A major earthquake caused significant damage to the prefecture's Noto Peninsula and elsewhere on New Year's Day.

The Emperor then moved on to an exhibition dedicated to uniquely Japanese designs selected by seven of Japan's leading creators.

The exhibits include earthenware from the Jomon period that is estimated to have begun about 15,000 years ago. Also on display is sportswear that was produced with cutting-edge technology and drew inspiration from giant paper lanterns on festival floats in Toyama Prefecture.

The Emperor is scheduled to visit a large movable flood barrier on the Thames on Monday.

Another hole found in screen at Mt. Fuji photo spot

A hole more than 10 centimeters wide has been found in a black screen that was set up at a popular photo spot in central Japan to block the view of Mount Fuji.

Japan's highest peak can be seen just above a convenience store in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture. Overseas tourists began flocking to the area around the store when photos of the view went viral on social media.

Some tourists crossed the busy road in front of the convenience store and entered private property without permission to take pictures. The town set up the black mesh screen to mask the view.

Town officials say a vertical rip about 13 centimeters long was found in the screen on Monday morning.

They say a hole found on Saturday has been patched up. They suspect the holes were made intentionally.

The officials plan to replace the screen with one made from stronger materials.

They are urging people not to damage the screen, saying it was installed to ensure the safety of tourists and vehicles as well as residents' peaceful lives. They say they hope people will visit other places in the town where they can enjoy scenic views of Mount Fuji.

S.Korea to appoint Japan expert Park Cheol-hee as new ambassador to Japan

Sources familiar with Japan-South Korea ties say the South Korean government plans to appoint an expert on Japanese politics as its new ambassador to Japan.

Park Cheol-hee currently heads the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, a think tank under South Korea's Foreign Ministry.

South Korean media say Park is to be tasked with building future-oriented relations with Japan as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic ties next year.

Park was formerly a dean and professor at the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University. He has long been engaged in the research of Japanese politics and is a well-known Japan specialist.

In the 2022 South Korean presidential election, he joined then-candidate Yoon Suk-yeol's camp as his foreign policy advisor. Park visited Japan as a member of the delegation dispatched by Yoon before he took office as the country's president.

Park became chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy in March last year.

Tokyo police warn political group leader over posters unrelated to election

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have warned the head of a political group over inappropriate posters placed on a campaign board for the Tokyo gubernatorial election.

Investigators told NHK that 24 posters carrying the name of an adult entertainment shop had been found on an election poster board in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward.

The police reportedly warned the political group's leader on Saturday on suspicion of violating the law regulating advertisements of adult entertainment businesses.

Following the warning, the political group apparently replaced the posters.

The incident follows a similar case in which posters of an almost-naked young woman were displayed on campaign boards on Thursday, when campaigning for the gubernatorial election officially kicked off.

Tokyo police also warned the candidate responsible for those posters for violating the capital's regulations.

A record 56 candidates are competing in the race to choose Tokyo's next leader in the election on July 7.

Japan launches nationwide survey of PFAS chemical concentrations in tap water

The Japanese government has launched a nationwide survey on the levels of potentially harmful chemicals known as PFAS in tap water.

The Environment Ministry and the infrastructure ministry have asked local governments and water service providers to report the results of water quality tests since fiscal 2020. The deadline is the end of September.

Survey recipients are asked whether or not they have conducted tests for PFAS. If the organic fluorine compounds were detected, they are asked to report the highest concentrations found.

If they have not carried out such tests, they are asked to explain why, and whether they plan to do so in the future.

Experts believe some of the compounds could be harmful. In October last year, tap water tests in Okayama Prefecture's Kibichuo Town found levels 28 times higher than the government's provisional target.

The nationwide situation is unknown because tests for PFAS are voluntary.

Local governments and water service providers that have never carried out such tests are asked to conduct at least one by September 30 and report the outcome.

The ministries say they will use the data from the survey when they consider reviewing the preliminary target.
