Japan Meteorological Agency warns of more quakes in Ishikawa

Japan's Meteorological Agency is calling on people in the area hit by an earthquake on Monday morning to be on alert for falling rocks and landslides.

The quake hit Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, and registered an intensity of upper 5 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7.

A senior official at the agency told reporters at a news conference that local people need to stay alert, as the risk of falling rocks and landslides is increasing in the area where strong jolts were felt.

The official warned that more quakes with similar intensities may hit the area over the coming week, and that a large quake may follow in the next couple of days.

He said that seismic activities have been continuing in the area for over three years, including the earthquake that devastated the region on New Year's Day.

He warned that the activities are expected to continue for the time being.

Hiroshima begins annual update of atomic bomb victims register

The city of Hiroshima has begun adding new names to the register of victims of the 1945 atomic bombing.

The city is updating the registry to include the names of bomb survivors who died, or whose deaths were confirmed, over the past year. The list will be placed in a cenotaph during the peace memorial ceremony on August 6.

The recording of the names began at the Hiroshima city office on Monday and will continue through August 5.

City officials said 4,100 names are expected to be added this year to the list of 339,227 victims.

After offering a prayer to the registry, Ikegame Kazuko and Nakamoto Nobuko began writing the names and ages of the victims. Both women are atomic bomb survivors and former city officials.

Ikegame said she will continue to carefully write the victims' names while praying for those who died and those who suffered hardships in the bombing.

Nakamoto said she wrote the names while recalling the tragedy and with the wish to pass on the memories to younger generations.

Japanese golfer Saso Yuka wins 2nd US Women's Open title

Japanese golfer Saso Yuka has won the US Women's Open tournament in Pennsylvania, becoming the first Japanese to clinch two major overseas golf titles. Shibuno Hinako of Japan came in second.

Saso started the final round on Sunday in fifth place, three strokes behind the leaders.

The 22-year-old displayed good shots and putts, sinking a long birdie putt on the par-4 second hole.

She made double bogey on the sixth hole, but ran off back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th to take the sole lead.

Saso continued her stable performance in the final stage, while the other top players struggled.

After five birdies, one bogey and one double bogey, Saso finished with a 2-under-par 68 to win the tournament at 4-under, three strokes clear of Shibuno.

It was her second major title. She won her first US Women's Open championship in 2021.

Saso was born to a Japanese father and a Filipino mother. She played for the Philippines at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but later chose Japanese nationality.

Shibuno started the final round in fourth place, two strokes behind the leaders. The 25-year-old ended the tournament in second place at 1-under.
