Japan's total fertility rate hit record low in 2023
Japan's government statistics reveal that the total fertility rate last year dropped to the lowest since record-keeping began in 1947. The number of children a woman is expected to have during her lifetime fell to 1.20.
The health ministry released approximate demographic statistics for 2023 on Wednesday.
The total fertility rate last year was down 0.06 points from the final figure for the previous year. It also marks the eighth straight year-on-year fall.
The total fertility rate dropped in all prefectures. Tokyo posted the lowest figure of 0.99. Next was Hokkaido at 1.06, then Miyagi at 1.07. Okinawa had the highest rate of 1.60, followed by Miyazaki and Nagasaki at 1.49 and Kagoshima at 1.48.
The number of Japanese babies born last year stood at 727,277. It fell 43,482 from a year earlier and was the lowest since statistical records began in 1899.
There were 1,575,936 deaths last year. This was a record high and 6,886 more than the previous year.
The number of marriages was 474,717. The figure fell by 30,213 year on year, marking the lowest level in post-war Japan.
Ministry officials said the declining birth rate is in a critical situation. They pointed out that the period before 2030 will be the last opportunity to reverse the trend as the young population is expected to drop sharply after that.
The officials said a range of factors, such as economic instability and the difficulty of balancing work and childcare, are intertwined.
They expressed their intention to accelerate necessary measures, such as promoting the uptake of paternity leave and raising the income of younger generations.

Japan's Diet approves pact to launch liaison body for joint fighter jet program
Japan's Diet has approved a treaty to set up an organization that will coordinate development of a next-generation fighter jet with Britain and Italy.
The Upper House of the Diet gave the approval at its plenary session on Wednesday, with a majority in favor.
The move won the backing of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner Komeito, as well as the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party.
A project called the Global Combat Air Programme, or GCAP, will develop the fighter. The three countries had agreed to set up the liaison body, named "GCAP International Government Organization," or GIGO.
GIGO will be headquartered in Britain with a Japanese national set to serve as its first leader.
The treaty specifies contributions for the operating budget and the dispatch of government personnel to the body.
Several hundred people are expected to work at the new organization. The Japanese government plans to send officials and engineers from the Defense Ministry as well as Air Self-Defense Force personnel. The number of personnel has yet to be decided.
GIGO will be inaugurated in autumn at the earliest and start arrangements with participating firms and work on a development schedule.

Modi's alliance wins majority in India's election, but his party loses seats
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared victory in the country's general election as his ruling party-led alliance maintained a majority. But his own party fell far short of winning a single-party majority.
Vote counting started on Tuesday. The election began in April, with 543 seats in India's lower house up for grabs.
The results released by the Election Commission early on Wednesday show that Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance secured 293 seats.
The prime minister said at his party's headquarters in New Delhi, "Today's victory is the victory of the world's largest democracy."
The ruling coalition will likely rush to hold talks to maintain the Modi administration for a third term. But his BJP party was reduced considerably to 240 seats.
An opposition alliance increased its seats, far more than exit polls had predicted.
Analysts point out that voters, mainly in rural areas, are dissatisfied with deepening economic disparities and worsening unemployment amid the country's economic growth under Modi's leadership.
Rahul Gandhi of the largest opposition Indian National Congress party said the election clearly showed that Indian people are calling on Modi to step down.

Former Ohtani interpreter pleads guilty to bank and tax fraud charges
Japanese Major League Baseball player Ohtani Shohei's former interpreter has admitted to stealing millions of dollars from the Los Angeles Dodgers star to pay off his gambling debts.
Mizuhara Ippei's sentencing is scheduled for October 25.
US prosecutors charged Mizuhara with bank fraud and filing a false tax return. They say he stole nearly 17 million dollars from Ohtani's bank account.
Mizuhara appeared at a federal court in Santa Ana, California on Tuesday.
He said he "fell into major gambling debt and the only way that" he could think of to get out of it was to use the money in Ohtani's bank account, which he had access to.
He pleaded guilty to both bank and tax fraud charges.
Mizuhara has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He is facing up to 33 years in prison, but he is likely to receive a lighter sentence.
The former interpreter did not respond to reporters' questions on Tuesday.
At a news conference, the prosecutors said that, based on sentencing guidelines, Mizuhara will likely be incarcerated. They said he also faces the risk of being deported back to Japan after that.
They stressed that Mizuhara took advantage of Ohtani and victimized the superstar.
Ohtani has released a statement. It says, "Now that the investigation has been completed, this full admission of guilt has brought important closure to me and my family."
Major League Baseball and the Dodgers also released statements. They both indicated that they consider the matter to be closed.

Ohtani's former interpreter pleads guilty to bank fraud, tax charges
The former interpreter for Japanese Major League Baseball player Ohtani Shohei has admitted to stealing tens of millions of dollars from the star to pay for years of gambling losses.
Mizuhara Ippei appeared on Tuesday at a federal court in Santa Ana, California, where he pleaded guilty to charges of bank fraud and filing a false tax return.
The judge instructed Mizuhara to explain the charges in his own words.
He said that he fell into "major gambling debt, and the only way that he could think of was" to use the money in Ohtani's bank account, which he had access to.
Prosecutors say Mizuhara began betting on sports in 2021 through an illegal bookmaker. They say he ended up stealing nearly 17 million dollars.
They say there is no evidence that Ohtani was involved in, or even aware of, the gambling.
Mizuhara faces up to 33 years in prison. However, he reached a plea agreement last month with federal prosecutors. The sentence will likely be greatly reduced. Sentencing is scheduled for October 25.
