Gaza authorities say Israel hostage rescue operation killed 274 Palestinians
Health authorities in the Gaza Strip say the number of Palestinians killed in the Israeli military's operation to rescue hostages in Nuseirat on Saturday has increased to 274 with 698 wounded.
Four Israeli hostages held by Hamas were rescued in the operation in the central part of the enclave that began at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday when many people were out shopping at a market.
The Israeli military said its troops engaged in fierce gun battles with Hamas fighters while trying to free the hostages. The military said it had also carried out an airstrike.
Video footage released by Reuters news agency on Sunday shows many buildings destroyed and streets filled with rubble and damaged cars. Authorities in Gaza said 89 houses and other structures had been destroyed.
Hamas' military arm published a video on the same day, claiming that three captives involved in the Israeli operation were killed, and that one of them had US citizenship.
The Israeli military continued airstrikes and ground offensives in the central and southern parts of Gaza on Sunday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel has no intention of ending the war without achieving the goal of eliminating Hamas.
Health authorities in the strip announced that the death toll has risen to 37,084 since the current conflict began in October last year.
Meanwhile, Israel's former Defense Minister Benny Gantz announced his resignation from the country's war cabinet on Sunday.
Gantz, a key centrist cabinet member, demanded last month that Netanyahu draw up a plan for the future governance of the Gaza Strip. He also suggested he would resign if the prime minister did not come up with one by Saturday.
At a news conference, Gantz criticized Netanyahu, saying, "Fateful strategic decisions are met with hesitancy and procrastination due to political considerations."
He called for early elections to seek the trust of the people.
Observers say far-right cabinet members are likely to increase their influence after Gantz's resignation, and further deepen divisions in the country.

Far-right parties projected to make big gains in European Parliament elections
Initial projections released by the European Parliament show that right-wing and far-right parties are expected to make big gains in the European elections.
Voting for the elections took place in 27 member states of the European Union from Thursday through Sunday.
In France, the far-right National Rally party is projected to win big over the ruling coalition parties led by President Emmanuel Macron. It is expected to secure more than twice as many seats as Macron's pro-European coalition.
The French far-right party opposes the EU in advancing European integration.
In response, Macron announced the dissolution of the national parliament and called for new elections, with the first round scheduled for late this month.
Macron said in a televised address that the rise of nationalists and what he called demagogues is a danger for France and also for Europe.
He said he has decided to give people back the choice of France's future through the vote.
In the 720-seat EU parliament, two groups, which include right-wing and far-right parties skeptical of the EU, are projected to increase their combined number of seats to around 130.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, which is not affiliated with the two groups, is also projected to increase the number of its seats to about 14.
Three major parliamentary groups of pro-European center-right and center-left parties are poised to maintain a majority. But it remains to be seen how the advancement of the EU-skeptic forces will affect Europe's future political direction.

Major reformists, moderates disqualified as Iran presidential candidates
The Iranian government has unveiled the list of six people allowed to stand in the presidential election on June 28. Most of the major reformist and moderate applicants were disqualified.
The Interior Ministry on Sunday announced the candidate lineup for the election, which was called after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash last month.
Eighty people filed for candidacy. The Guardian Council, or a panel of Islamic jurists and others, approved only six of them as candidates after examining their qualifications, such as loyalty to the country's Islamic establishment.
The six include parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who once belonged to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He is a hardline conservative like Raisi, whose administration was sharply at odds with Western countries.
The list also contains another hardline conservative, Saeed Jalili. He was secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, a body in charge of national defense and foreign affairs.
Candidacy was also granted to Masoud Pezeshkian, who was deputy parliamentary speaker and health minister. He is a reformist seeking dialogue with Western powers.
But other major reformists and moderates were disqualified for unknown reasons.
Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is popular among the underprivileged, was also barred from running.
Voter turnout in the previous presidential election in 2021 was 48.8 percent, the lowest since the Islamic establishment took hold in Iran in 1979. Many people did not vote as they were dissatisfied to see major reformists and moderates disqualified from running in the poll.
The Interior Ministry said electoral campaigns for the upcoming poll officially began on Sunday.

Japan limits asylum claims under revised immigration control law
Japan is starting to enforce the revised Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act on Monday. It makes foreign nationals who have applied for asylum status three or more times subject to deportation unless they have reasonable grounds.
Authorities say some foreigners try to avoid deportation by abusing a system that suspends it while their asylum claims are being processed.
The revised law also allows those facing deportation to live under the supervision of authorized individuals, rather than at detention facilities.
The Immigration Services Agency says it has witnessed prolonged detentions and screenings for repeat asylum seekers who refused to leave Japan for their home countries.
The agency adds that the situation made it difficult to swiftly safeguard those who really needed protection.
However, groups supporting foreigners are pointing out drawbacks in the revised law, such as failing to ensure sufficient transparency and fairness in asylum screenings.
They say the legislation could allow asylum seekers to be deported to nations where they may be persecuted.

Biden says he and Macron agree on how to use Russian assets to help Ukraine
US President Joe Biden says he has reached an agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron on how to use profits from frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.
Asked by a reporter on Sunday whether he discussed the issue with Macron and had come up with an agreement, Biden replied "Yes, and yes."
But Biden, who was in France, did not reveal the details.
The Group of Seven nations are considering using profits generated by the Russian central bank's frozen assets to support Ukraine. The assets were immobilized to sanction Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The United States estimates the frozen assets will turn profits of 3 to 5 billion dollars a year. The country wants to use the profits as collateral to provide Ukraine with up to 50 billion dollars in loans.
The leaders of the G7 countries are scheduled to discuss the issue at their summit set to open in Italy on Thursday.
