Chinese defense minister keeps US in check over Taiwan
China's Defense Minister has warned that whoever tries to split Taiwan from China will end up in self-destruction, apparently referencing the United States.
Dong Jun made the remarks during a speech at the Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, in Singapore on Sunday.
The conference was held as China steps up military pressure on Taiwan amid growing US involvement.
Dong said the world is now at a crossroads. Referring to his country's relations with the US, he suggested it is important to find ways to build good relations.
The Chinese military conducted drills around Taiwan after President Lai Chin-te of the Democratic Progressive Party took office last month.
Dong said Taiwan is the core of core issues for China, and the current problem is that the DPP authorities are incrementally pursuing Taiwan's independence.
The defense minister said Taiwan falls entirely within China's internal affairs and external forces have no right to interfere.
Dong asserted his country's position as he took part in the conference for the first time.
Some participants criticized China's stance of carrying out military drills around Taiwan.
On the previous day at the conference, Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru stressed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait during a speech. He was apparently referring to China's increasing maritime activities in the East and South China Sea.

Coast Guard officials discuss South China Sea maritime security
Coast Guard officials have discussed ways to ensure maritime security amid China's increasingly coercive actions in the South China Sea.
The Shangri-La Dialogue session in Singapore on Saturday included delegates from Southeast Asia, the United States, and Japan.
Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan touched on a recent incident in which the Chinese Coast Guard fired water cannons at Philippine ships in the South China Sea, injuring crew members.
He said water cannons are supposed to "save lives and properties from fire, or simply to put off fire," and are not "meant to light up fire."
US Coast Guard Commandant Linda Fagan stressed plans to increase support for the Philippine Coast Guard and other organizations.
She said the United States will help its partners build their "own capacity to exercise sovereignty in their waters."
Japan Coast Guard Vice Commandant Seguchi Yoshio, who participated in the meeting for the first time, said "Coast Guard agency ships must not be used as tools to change the status quo."

Chinese military ships enter waters near Kinmen Islands
Taiwan's coast guard authorities say two Chinese military ships navigated in waters near the Kinmen Islands, which Taiwan effectively controls.
Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration announced on Saturday that the Chinese ships intruded into what it calls "restricted waters" on the south side of the islands on Wednesday.
Taiwanese authorities ban Chinese ships from entering the area without permission. In Wednesday's incident, patrol boats were dispatched to warn the Chinese vessels to leave, but the ships reportedly navigated in the waters for about 40 minutes.
The Taiwan Army's Kinmen Defense Command says it monitors all movements in the area and reacted appropriately for the level of threat.
Chinese authorities began asserting a clearer stance of denying Taiwan's jurisdiction over the waters after two Chinese fishers who were illegally operating near the islands in February died when their boat capsized while being pursued by Taiwan's coast guard.
Since then Chinese ships, including Coast Guard vessels, have frequently been observed intruding into the waters on the Taiwanese side. But there were no reports until recently of Chinese military ships entering the area.
The Chinese military last week conducted drills around Taiwan's main island and also around Kinmen and other remote islands. Military vessels navigated into waters off the Kinmen Islands for the first time, prompting Taiwan to step up its alert level.

China's Chang'e-6 probe lands on moon's far side, state-run media report
China's state-run media say the country's unmanned lunar probe touched down on the far side of the moon on Sunday morning.
China Central Television reported that the Chang'e-6, which was launched early last month, began the descent shortly after 6 a.m., Beijing time, and successfully landed about 15 minutes later.
Chinese space authorities released footage purportedly taken by the Chang'e-6 as it landed.
The landing area is near the lunar south pole. Scientists say there may be ice on the far side of the moon that could be turned into drinking water and fuel.
The Chang'e-6 is maintaining communication with Earth through a relay satellite. Chinese officials say the probe will aim to collect soil and rock samples for about two days from Sunday. These would be the first samples to be brought back to Earth from the far side of the moon.
The mission aims to pave the way for establishing a lunar base where astronauts can stay.
The United States and India are also exploring areas near the moon's south pole.
Observers say China apparently hopes to enhance its presence in lunar exploration and development through the sample-return mission.

North Korea sends more trash balloons towards Seoul
The South Korean military says that North Korea launched balloons carrying trash and waste towards South Korea again.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said that the launch began at around 8:00 p.m. Saturday.
They say that about 90 such balloons were found, which dropped cigarette butts and paper waste in the capital city Seoul and nearby Gyeonggi Province.
The military advised people to beware of falling objects and inform either military or police if they found suspicious items.
North Korea launched about 260 similar balloons towards various parts of South Korea including Seoul several days ago.
South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik on Saturday condemned North Korea calling the action crude and low during a speech at the Asian Security Summit in Singapore.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that North Korea sent GPS jamming signals in the Yellow Sea west of the peninsula for four straight days till Saturday.
Seoul says it considers the recent Pyongyang's provocative actions very serious.

Voting in India's election ends, Modi's alliance projected to win majority
All voting in India's general election ended on Saturday. Local media released the results of exit polls showing the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's alliance seems on track to win a parliamentary majority required to keep him in office.
The final round of the seven-phase election, which is the world's largest with nearly 1 billion eligible voters, finished on Saturday. The voting took place in 543 electoral districts.
Modi heads the governing Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, and seeks a third term as prime minister. The party won a majority of seats in the previous 2019 general election, and the ruling coalition gained nearly two-thirds of the seats.
Media exit polls predict that such momentum will continue this time as well.
Opposition parties are complaining that the results of exit polls do not correctly reflect the actual vote.
During the election campaign, the ruling bloc focused on Modi's popularity to expand support. It stressed that his strong leadership has led to the country's economic growth.
The opposition aimed to win over voters critical of Modi by saying that unemployment among young people and economic disparity started becoming serious under his administration.
Vote counting will take place across the country on Tuesday.

Traditional riparian iris flower wedding procession reenacted
Visitors to a riverside garden in Ibaraki Prefecture enjoyed a traditional wedding ceremony procession on a boat amid irises in full bloom.
Itako City, northeast of Tokyo, is surrounded by lakes and rivers where boats plying waterways was once a daily form of transportation.
Until the 1960s, it was customary for brides in white wedding kimonos to be seen on row boats heading to meet their bridegrooms.
The revived tradition has become a highlight of the annual Suigo Itako Iris Festival.
Recently married couples, or those planning to marry sent in applications to the city for a chance to take part in the event.
On Saturday, a boat carrying a bride set out as visitors watching from the riverside applauded.
The bride and groom were united at a dock and then proceeded to walk through the iris garden.
One of the visitors said the ceremony was so beautiful that he was almost moved to tears.
Bride Miyamoto Michiko said it was a very happy day for her, and that she could see from the boat each one of the people along the river applauding her.
Bridegroom Miyamoto Kensuke said that he was elated by all of the congratulations.
The ceremony can be seen on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through June 16.
