S.Korea: N.Korea sent over 300 trash-carrying balloons
The South Korean military says North Korea has sent more than 300 trash-carrying balloons into South Korea since Saturday night.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it had detected about 330 balloons launched by the North, with some found in the capital Seoul and northern Gyeonggi Province.
About 80 balloons reportedly landed inside South Korea. The country's military and police collected them.
South Korea says the balloons were carrying trash such as paper, and that no hazardous materials were found. It adds many balloons appear to have fallen into the sea and mountainous areas.
It is the third time since May that Pyongyang has sent trash-carrying balloons into the South. It is an apparent retaliation for anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent via balloon by a group of North Korean defectors in South Korea.
The South Korean presidential office on Sunday morning held a National Security Council meeting to discuss how to respond.
South Korea's government is considering the resumption of loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts toward the North near the military demarcation line separating the two Koreas.
South Korean defense ministry sources said on Tuesday they are ready to restart loudspeaker broadcasting at any time, depending on the situation.

N.Korea again sends balloons carrying trash into S.Korea
The South Korean military says North Korea has again sent balloons carrying trash and waste into South Korea in an apparent response to anti-Pyongyang leafleting by an activist group in the South.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the balloons travelled eastward from northern Gyeonggi Province near the capital Seoul as of 11 p.m. on Saturday, and may be swept southward on the wind.
It is the third time since May that Pyongyang has sent a large number of trash-carrying balloons into the South.
On June 2, North Korea's vice defense minister announced the temporary halt of the balloon operation.
The official said the operation would resume if more anti-Pyongyang leaflets were sent North from the South.
He added that Pyongyang will respond by sending balloons carrying garbage amounting to 100 times the quantity of the propaganda leaflets.
The latest incident came after a group of North Korea defectors in the South on Thursday sent balloons carrying leaflets criticizing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, along with USB sticks containing South Korean dramas and other data.
The South Korean government is considering the resumption of loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts toward the North near the military demarcation line separating the two Koreas.

Ukraine faces summer power shortages with Russian attacks on energy facilities
Ukraine is likely to face a difficult summer of severe power shortages amid continuing Russian attacks on energy facilities with missiles and drones.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told local media on Friday that only 27 percent of the country's thermal power plants remain in proper working condition.
The CEO of the Ukrainian state-run power firm Ukrenergo revealed that the damage on power plants is larger in scale this year than how it was last year.
Local media reported that the power shortage will worsen further in summer.
The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, a Ukrainian opinion survey company, released the result of the survey conducted in May in which, it said, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's approval rate was 59 percent.
It said that in May, 2022, shortly after the beginning of the Russian invasion, his approval rate was 90 percent.
The firm said that many Ukrainians continue to trust Zelenskyy but the approval rate is on the decline.
It says the main reasons are that people feel that the burden of the war is unfair and that fighting corruption has not progressed enough.
Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed in his speech on Friday that Zelenskyy has lost legitimacy after a presidential election which was scheduled for March did not take place.
Russia has been and is keen on damaging credibility of Zelenskyy among Ukrainians, hoping, apparently, that it will lead to the change of leadership.

Israel, Hamas diverge on Gaza death toll from hostage rescue operation
The Israeli military has said its operation to rescue four hostages was carried out after weeks of preparation, but Hamas says that the operation's gun battles and air raids took the lives of over 100 more central Gaza residents than Israel claims.
Israel says its intelligence agency found out where one female and three male hostages were being held in separate buildings by the Islamic group. The rescue operation started at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The New York Times reported that Israeli forces chose to move in the daylight in an attempt to catch Hamas off guard since the armed group might expect such an operation to take place at night.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the rescue of the female hostage went smoothly, but the raid on the building where the male hostages were held ran into difficulties, triggering an exchange of fire.
The Israel Air Force bombed the area to extricate the hostages.
Israeli forces say fewer than 100 Palestinians were killed in the operation, but Hamas says 210 residents lost their lives. Its sharp criticism of the Israeli operation could have an adverse impact on negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of additional hostages.
Health authorities in the Gaza Strip have said the death toll in the enclave since the conflict began last October stood at 36,654 before Saturday's rescue operation.

Protesters gather in front of White House, demanding immediate ceasefire in Gaza
Thousands of protesters have gathered in the US capital Washington, demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Protesters came from places across the United States on Saturday in response to calls from Arab American groups, as talks to achieve a ceasefire are stalled.
They filled a square in front of the White House, holding signs which said "Stop genocide" or "Stop military assistance to Israel".
One protester said that he wants to see the bloody tactics end and children not to be killed.
He added that he wants President Joe Biden to work on the ceasefire and that the US should not be supporting Israel.
Another participant talked of the many lives being lost in the Gaza Strip every day.
She said there are no words to describe how devastating it is and that the "red line" was crossed eight months ago.
There is deep-rooted support for Israel in the United States.
But as more and more civilians are killed in Gaza, Biden and his administration, which provide military support to Israel, are facing increasing criticism.
The war in Gaza could cast a shadow over the presidential election in November.

Colombia to suspend coal exports to Israel
Colombia has announced that it will suspend coal exports to Israel over its military operations in the Gaza Strip.
President Gustavo Petro said on social media on Saturday that the exports will be suspended until Israel stops its attacks on civilians in Gaza.
Colombia is one of the major coal exporters to Israel. The Colombian government says coal accounted for 90 percent of the country's exports to Israel between January and August last year.
Colombia saw an internal conflict involving leftist guerrilla groups that lasted more than half a century. Israel provided military assistance, and the two countries developed close ties.
Petro became Colombia's first leftist president in 2022.
He has repeatedly criticized the administration of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He announced last month that Colombia would break diplomatic relations with Israel.
Left-wing governments in other Latin American nations have also taken steps to review their relations with Israel. Last year, Bolivia severed diplomatic ties with the Middle Eastern country, and Chile recalled its ambassador.

Israeli lecturer calls on Japanese to create peace without arms
A former Israeli soldier living in Japan has told an audience in a lecture in Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo that people must work together to create peace without use of force.
A civic group in Abiko City invited Dani Nehushtai on Saturday to talk about war and peace. Nehushtai has lived in Japan for about 40 years and is a peace activist.
He said after graduating from a high school, he was conscripted into the Israeli Air Force for three years, during which time he felt proud to defend his country.
But he said after the Israeli military attacked the Gaza Strip in 2008, leading to many casualties including children, he came to the realization that peace cannot be achieved through force.
Nehushtai spoke about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas that broke out last year in which civilians are dying in airstrikes. He said that war can be stopped if everyone works together. He called on the audience members to speak out for peace as children are being victimized.
A college student said it was a valuable experience for him to hear about the current situation in Gaza and the background of the Israel-Palestinian crisis from a person from Israel. He said that he has never experienced war, but said he wants to think about what is happening now without thinking that peace is a matter of course.

Ritual held for good harvest and revival from earthquake
Residents and volunteers in a farming area in Ishikawa Prefecture in Noto Peninsula which was hit by an earthquake on the New Year's Day have taken part in a ceremony called "mushi-okuri."
The ritual has been conducted every year after the rice planting is done to chase harmful insects away from rice fields with torches.
About 80 people gathered in the Omaki district of Nanao City on Saturday. They carried bamboo torches about one-meter long.
They walked slowly ringing bells and beating drums praying for a speedy recovery from the earthquake and rebuilding of the community.
The quake damaged irrigation canals that water the rice fields.
Most of the farmers in the district could not plant rice this year.
They thought about cancelling the event but they decided to hold it to keep the community spirit going.
One of the participants was a volunteer from Kobe City who came to help shortly after the quake.
She said that the situation has not changed much since the earthquake but during the ritual she could feel the hopes of the community residents for rebuilding their lives.
The leader of the organizing group, Urakami Hiroyuki, said that he is grateful to the many people who helped make the event possible.
He added that the community will work together to bring back normal life and the area's beautiful scenery.
