France votes on Sunday, Macron could face tough result

French voters will go to polling stations on Sunday for the first round of choosing representatives for the lower house, the National Assembly.

President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the parliament and called a snap election following the defeat earlier this month of his centrist coalition to the far-right National Rally in the European Union's parliamentary elections.

Macron's party and its coalition partners, the National Rally and the newly formed leftist New Popular Front alliance, are vying for votes.

The National Rally is expected to take the lead. It supports a nationalistic policy and tighter regulations on immigration. It's been saying that it is ready to govern the country.

Macron asserts that a government under the National Rally would cause a national crisis in France.

A public opinion poll released on Friday suggests that the National Rally and candidates with ties to the party could win as many as 265 seats, or triple its number before the election.

The survey shows that the New Popular Front alliance could win as many as 200 seats to become the second largest force in the lower house.

Macron's centrist coalition may end up with 100 seats at most, losing more than half of its seats.

The results of the first round will come in on Sunday evening and the second round will be held on July 7.

North Korea denounces Japan-US-South Korea joint military exercises

North Korea has denounced a large-scale joint military exercise by Japan, the United States and South Korea, warning such action could lead to "fatal consequences."

The three countries carried out the "Freedom Edge" exercise for three days through Saturday in waters including the East China Sea, with the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt taking part. Seven types of drills were held, including a missile defense operation at sea and response to a cyberattack.

The North's Foreign Ministry said via the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Sunday that it strongly denounces the three countries for their "provocative military muscle-flexing."

The ministry branded the trilateral security cooperation as "the Asian version of NATO."

In an apparent reference to Pyongyang's ties with Russia and China, the statement vowed to further strengthen "mutual cooperation and concerted action" so as to deter "the hostile forces' collective military intervention."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly delivered what state media called an "important" speech at a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee on Saturday. The report did not include any details.

Focus is on whether Kim mentioned the country's nuclear and missile development programs in the fourth year of its five-year defense plan, or if he made any remarks on what posture Pyongyang will take toward the US and South Korea.

Kim Jong Un portrait badge confirmed for first time

North Korean media have published photos of senior officials wearing badges featuring the portrait of leader Kim Jong Un at a key meeting of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee.

This is the first confirmation of such badges, indicating accelerated efforts to iconize Kim in the North.

The Sunday edition of the party's newspaper, Rodong Sinmun carried photos from the second day of the plenary meeting.

The images show senior officials giving speeches while wearing the badges on their chests.

It is compulsory in North Korea to wear portrait pins to express loyalty to the leadership. So far, these badges have mainly featured Kim's grandfather, Kim Il Sung, and father, Kim Jong Il.

North Korean media last month showed a portrait of the current leader displayed alongside those of his two predecessors at a party cadre training school.

Kim Jong Un is believed to have turned 40 in January. More than a decade has passed since he became North Korea's leader.

Ohtani Shohei hits 26th homer of the season

Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Dodgers has hit his 26th homerun of the season in a 14-to-7 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Ohtani batted first in the lineup as a designated hitter in the Saturday game that went to extra innings.

In the third inning, the score was tied 1-1. Ohtani slammed a slider over center field in his second at-bat.

The solo homer came off the bat at a speed of 176.5 kilometers per hour, and flew 125.5 meters. It was his first home run in two games.

Ohtani has widened his lead over the runner-up in the National League home run race to five.

He will reach 200 career home runs in Major League Baseball with three more homers. He is also one score away from becoming the third Japanese player to reach 500 RBIs in MLB career.

Japan to offer foreign students help with high school entrance tests

Japan's education ministry has instructed public senior high schools across the country to provide special considerations for foreign applicants in taking entrance exams.

In a notice issued for the regional education boards, the ministry compiled steps to be taken to help foreign nationals applying for senior high schools.

The ministry cites the importance for children from abroad to receive proper senior high school education to become independent citizens in Japanese society.

The notice calls for setting up special quotas for such applicants. It also calls for allowing them to use dictionaries during the tests and providing phonetic hiragana characters beside more difficult kanji characters in their test sheets to help them read the questions.

A survey conducted by the ministry in 2021 shows more than 47,000 children lacked adequate Japanese language skills ---an 80-percent increase in the space of about ten years.

Officials say they issued the notice because only a limited number of schools have introduced special quotas or other measures for foreign applicants.

Crackdown on speech intensifies in Hong Kong under national security laws

Sunday marks four years since China's national security law for Hong Kong went into effect. The legislation is designed to crack down on anti-government activity.

The suppression of free speech intensified this year after a local ordinance to complement the law came into force in March.

The security legislation took effect on June 30, 2020, about a year after massive dissident protests erupted in Hong Kong.

Under the law, pro-democracy politicians and activists have been arrested, and anti-government rallies and demonstrations have been restricted.

Last month, 14 pro-democracy activists were convicted for their alleged violation of the law. They are among 47 activists, including former pro-democracy legislators, who were charged with subversion three years ago.

Court proceedings continue for the other defendants, effectively extending their detention.

A local ordinance that took effect in March criminalizes espionage and interference by foreign entities. It also stipulates stricter punishment for acts that instigate hatred against the Chinese government.

Earlier this month, a man was charged with violating the law for allegedly wearing a T-shirt with a slogan used in the 2019 protests.

Hong Kong's security authorities told NHK that over the past four years 299 people have been arrested for allegedly endangering national security.

Zelenskyy mentions 'comprehensive plan' by year's end to end conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that a plan to end the conflict with Russia will be prepared by the end of this year.

He said on Friday in Kyiv that "it is very important for us to show a plan to end the war that will be supported by the majority of the world."

Zelenskyy stressed the importance of resisting the Russian aggression by force, while preparing the plan for peace.

He said that "to be strong on the battlefield and to develop a clear, detailed plan" should be done in parallel.

He did not talk about the details. There is speculation that the plan could spark discussions at future gatherings of international leaders on bringing peace to Ukraine.

Russia, on the other hand, is demanding that Ukraine withdraw its forces from the four regions that Moscow unilaterally annexed as a condition for starting peace talks.

Israel trades fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon while attacking Gaza

Tensions have been mounting in the Middle East as Israeli forces trade fire with Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon while continuing fierce attacks in Gaza.

Clashes have intensified in recent weeks between Israel and Hezbollah, a Shia militant group backed by Iran.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Friday, "We aren't looking for a war, but we're ready for one."

Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations said on social media that should Israel "embark on full-scale military aggression, an obliterating war will ensue. All options, including the full involvement of all Resistance Fronts, are on the table."

On Saturday, the Israeli military said it identified anti-tank projectiles crossing from Lebanon, and struck the sources of fire.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have again carried out operations in northern Gaza, where they had claimed to have taken control, as well as in Rafah in the south. They said that they eliminated a large number of terrorists and located a weapons storage facility within a school compound.

Local media reported Israeli warplanes bombed a house in northern Gaza City, leaving several civilians dead and others wounded.

The United Nations said on Friday that the Israeli military ordered people in northern Gaza to immediately evacuate. It said its "humanitarian partners estimate that at least 60,000 people were displaced from this area."

Health authorities in Gaza say that the number of deaths in the enclave has risen to 37,834 since fighting began last October.
