Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have left on an eight-day state visit to Britain.
The Emperor and Empress departed on a government plane from Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Saturday.
The Imperial couple were sent off by Crown Prince and Princess Akishino, Supreme Court Chief Justice Tokura Saburo, and the charge d'affaires ad interim of the British Embassy in Tokyo, among others.
They are scheduled to arrive in London on Saturday afternoon local time.
This is the Imperial couple's second state visit to a foreign country since Emperor Naruhito was enthroned in 2019.
The Emperor and Empress were officially invited by King Charles. They will attend a welcoming ceremony on Tuesday, as well as a banquet at Buckingham Palace.
The Emperor plans to visit the British royal family's tomb at Windsor Castle on Thursday to lay flowers at the grave of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip.
The next day, the Emperor and Empress are scheduled to visit the University of Oxford, where they both studied.
The Imperial couple will return to Japan next Saturday.
The visit was initially scheduled for 2020 upon the invitation of the late Queen Elizabeth II. But it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

UNSC meeting being arranged to discuss new Russia-N.Korea treaty: Sources
UN diplomatic sources say arrangements are being made for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council next Friday to discuss a new treaty between Russia and North Korea that strengthens bilateral military cooperation.
The sources say Japan and the United States are among countries calling for a Security Council meeting to discuss the matter.
The new treaty between Moscow and Pyongyang stipulates that if either of them is placed under a state of war, the other will provide military and other assistance.
Officials of countries such as Japan, the US and South Korea criticized and expressed concern over the treaty, saying that it will lead to worsening of the security environment in the Indo-Pacific region.

Japan conveys concern to Russia over advancing military ties with N.Korea
A senior official of Japan's Foreign Ministry has urged Russia to halt its invasion of Ukraine immediately, and expressed concern about Moscow's growing military ties with North Korea.
The Director-General of the ministry's European Affairs Bureau, Nakagome Masashi, met with the director of the third Asian department of Russia's foreign ministry, Lyudmila Vorobyova, in Moscow on Friday.
Japanese officials say this is the first time that the director-general of the Japanese foreign ministry has held talks with a Russian counterpart in Moscow since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Nakagome said relations between Japan and Russia face difficulties due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He called for an immediate halt, describing the invasion as a clear violation of international law.
Nakagome referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea earlier this week and signing of a new treaty that includes a pledge for mutual military support. The official conveyed concerns over enhancing military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
Nakagome also discussed issues relating to the Northern Territories. He called for the resumption of a program that allows Japanese citizens to visit their ancestors' graves on the islands and the restart of an agreement to let Japanese fishing boats operate safely in the area.
Russia controls the four islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.
Russia's Foreign Ministry also announced that the foreign ministry officials of the two countries had brief talks on Friday.
The ministry said it gave the Japanese side a fundamental assessment of the current state of bilateral ties, which have degraded to an unprecedented low level due to what it called the hostile policy by Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's administration.
The ministry also said a new package of sanctions against Russia, which was adopted by the Japanese government on Friday, was another step toward the complete destruction of bilateral relations.
The ministry said it warned Japan that Russia will continue to respond with the toughest countermeasures for Tokyo, guided solely by its own national interests.
The ministry also said it pointed out that Japan's attempts to "challenge" the development of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea are categorically unacceptable.
It added that it conveyed to the Japanese side the content of President Putin's initiative to create a new continental security architecture in Eurasia.

Ukraine intensifies attacks on Russian oil depots
Ukrainian defense officials said on Friday they carried out drone attacks on four oil facilities in southern Russia in an effort to disrupt infrastructure supplying enemy forces.
They also said fires at multiple fuel depots in the southwestern region a day earlier were the result of their attacks.
In the Kremlin on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an argument to maintain nuclear capabilities at a graduation ceremony for military, police and intelligence service academies.
Putin said Russia plans to "further develop the nuclear triad as a guarantee of strategic deterrence and to preserve the balance of power in the world." The "nuclear triad" is a reference to nuclear missiles launched from land, sea and air.
During a recent visit to Vietnam, Putin said he is thinking about possible changes to Russia's nuclear doctrine and strategy.

US agency accuses Honda Motor of quashing unionization drive
A US independent federal agency has accused Honda Motor of violating laws that protect workers' rights, saying it unlawfully suppressed an effort to organize a labor union at its plant in the state of Indiana.
The National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint against the Japanese automaker on Tuesday.
The accusations include instructing workers to remove stickers of the United Auto Workers union from their helmets and threatening disciplinary action against union supporters.
A hearing before the board's judge is scheduled for October.
Honda says the allegations of wrongdoing in the complaint are without merit and the company will cooperate in the hearing.
The automaker says filing unfair labor practice charges is a common tactic used by the labor union to generate publicity and attention for their organizing campaigns.
The UAW won big pay raises from the management of three major carmakers last year. It has been encouraging workers at plants of foreign auto firms in the US to unionize.
