Zelenskyy calls for more air-defense aid at Ukraine Recovery Conference

Discussions on how to reconstruct Ukraine are being held in Berlin, Germany. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told the participants that to advance recovery efforts his country needs more support for its air defense system.

Around 2,000 people, including government and corporate officials from more than 60 countries, have gathered in the German capital for the two-day conference that started on Tuesday.

The World Bank and others estimate that the recovery and reconstruction effort in Ukraine will cost 486 billion dollars over the next ten years.

Zelenskyy, who attended the meeting in person on Tuesday, condemned Russia for intentionally targeting power infrastructure in Ukraine. He appealed for support and asked the participants to invest in his country's recovery efforts.

Zelenskyy said, "Air defense is really the answer for everything." He said his country needs at least seven additional Patriot air defense systems to prevent Russia's strikes and advance the recovery and reconstruction efforts.

At the meeting, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU is signing an agreement worth 1.4 billion euros, or around 1.5 billion dollars, to attract investment in Ukraine from the private sector.

Japan's Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Fukazawa Yoichi promised that his country will provide support for the electricity sector and countermeasures against land mines. He also noted that support will be provided through public and private sector partnerships.

Following the conference, the Group of Seven nations will hold a summit in Italy. The meeting will begin on Thursday. An international conference aimed at trying to implement a peace plan proposed by Ukraine will be held in Switzerland. It will begin on Saturday.

Zelenskyy is believed to be trying harder to urge the international community to provide support.

US: G7 leaders to discuss using frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine

A senior US government official says Group of Seven countries will look at ways to use frozen Russian assets to provide funding to Ukraine.

The group's members froze the assets using sanctions after Russia invaded its neighbor in 2022.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said on Tuesday the matter will be on the agenda of the G7 summit starting on Thursday in Italy.

Kirby said, "I think you're going to see unanimity here at the G7 when it comes to working towards using these frozen assets to help Ukraine with their reconstruction." He said leaders would announce "new steps" to that end.

The G7 countries have already said they are considering using interest earned on frozen Russian sovereign assets.

Kirby said G7 leaders will also announce a new set of sanctions and export controls, targeting entities and networks that are helping Russia procure resources for the invasion of Ukraine.

He added that US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will hold a news conference on Thursday on the sidelines of the summit.

Japan considers sanctions on firms in China helping Russia's war effort

Sources close to the Japanese government say Tokyo is considering new sanctions on organizations suspected of involvement in the provision of materials to Russia that could be converted for military use.

They say the sanctions could include a ban on exports from Japan to businesses in third countries, including in China.

The plan is meant to step up pressure on activities that help Russia's military operation in Ukraine.

The United States expressed concern earlier this year about Chinese exports to Russia of nitrocellulose, a dual-use material that can be used to produce ammunition.

Once the sanctions policy is in place, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio would present it to other Group of Seven countries at the summit in Italy. The meeting is scheduled to be held from Thursday.

Japan's imposition of sanctions on companies in China would be the first related to Russia's offensive in Ukraine.

Observers say the move would encourage China to act responsibly for global peace and stability.

Russia denounces Ukraine peace summit as empty and worthless

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has denounced as completely empty and worthless an upcoming international conference where a peace plan proposed by Ukraine will be discussed. Moscow will not take part in the gathering.

Lavrov made the remark on Tuesday, after he attended a two-day meeting of BRICS foreign ministers. The conference was held in the western Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.

The BRICS group includes Russia, China, India and other emerging countries. Iran, the United Arab Emirates and others joined the group this year.

Lavrov said that the number of countries interested in working with BRICS is steadily growing. He noted the figure is already approaching 30.

The foreign minister denounced the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, which will take place in Switzerland on Saturday and Sunday.

Lavrov's remark comes as western countries are bolstering their support for Ukraine. The Group of Seven nations is expected to discuss the issue at a summit in Italy. The meeting will begin on Thursday.

Russia is stepping up diplomatic efforts with the recently expanded BRICS group of nations and the emerging and developing countries that are collectively known as the Global South.

Hamas replies to US-backed ceasefire plan in Gaza

The US White House says it is evaluating a reply from Hamas to a US-backed proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. But it remains to be seen whether the proposal leads to progress in negotiations, as Israel appears to be unconvinced by the response.

US President Joe Biden on May 31 revealed a three-phase plan that includes a six-week ceasefire and release of hostages held by Hamas.

Egypt and Qatar, both serving as mediators in negotiations, said on social media on Tuesday that they have received a response to the plan from Hamas.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said, "It's certainly helpful that we have a response."

Details of the response have yet to be disclosed. Earlier, Hamas showed some positive signs toward the proposal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not changed his goal, which involves the complete destruction of Hamas.

An Israeli official told Reuters news agency that Hamas has rejected the hostage release proposal in the plan.

Blinken announces additional $400 mil. in aid to Palestinians

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced more than 400 million dollars in additional humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza.

Blinken made the announcement at a conference in Jordan on Tuesday. The 404-million-dollar aid package will reportedly be used to provide food, drinking water, medical care and shelter.

Blinken noted that Israel has taken some important steps in recent months to open more crossings into Gaza to address obstacles to delivery.

But he said, "It can and must to do more." He also called on Israel to take further steps to reduce civilian casualties.

Japan joins expanded US military drills

Japan's Self-Defense Forces have for the first time joined biennial US military drills known as Valiant Shield 24. They kicked off on Friday in the Indo-Pacific.

The large-scale exercises are taking place in an expanded area that stretches from waters off Guam to Japan.

Media including NHK boarded a cargo aircraft to observe an exercise involving the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan off the southern Japanese coast.

US Commander Gregory Newkirk says Japan's participation shows that the two sides "are coming together more often to train at a very high level."

The US space force is also taking part in the drills, apparently to counter China's increasing influence outside the Earth's atmosphere.

Survey: Japan lags behind at 118th in global gender equality rankings

A survey shows that Japan's standing in the global gender equality rankings still trails behind most of the world, despite some improvement from last year. The result highlights the slow pace of progress for women politically and economically.

Japan ranks 118th among 146 nations in the annual Global Gender Gap Report released by the World Economic Forum on Wednesday. Its ranking went up by seven places, from 125th last year.

The report compiles rankings for "Economic Participation and Opportunity," "Educational Attainment," "Health and Survival" and "Political Empowerment."

Overall, Iceland tops the list for the 15th year in a row, followed by Finland, Norway and New Zealand.

Japan almost achieves parity in education and healthcare, but again scored poorly in the other two categories.

The report says the share of women in legislative, senior official and managerial roles in the country increased by 1.7 percentage points from last year to 14.6 percent, but this remains amongst the lowest in the world.

It says that, "Japan's gender disparity in senior roles remains significant."

The report also warns that it would take 134 years to achieve equality worldwide at the current pace.

BTS member Jin completes mandatory military service

The oldest member of K-pop boy band BTS, Jin, has been discharged from South Korea's military, completing his 18 months of mandatory service.

The 31-year-old was seen leaving an army facility close to the military demarcation line between the two Koreas on Wednesday morning.

Jin became the first of BTS's seven members to finish his compulsory national service. The rest joined the military by December last year.
In South Korea, all eligible men are required to serve in the military for a certain period.

Jin saluted reporters before reuniting with five of his bandmates. Local media say the members applied for leave to greet him.

Almost no fans were seen at the site because the group's agency had advised them not to visit the scene in order to prevent overcrowding.

Jin is scheduled to hold a meet-and-greet event for fans in Seoul on Thursday. Fans across the world are looking forward to the BTS star's return to the music scene.
