Battle of Okinawa remembered 79 years on
People in Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa are remembering a fierce ground battle that unfolded 79 years ago in the closing stages of World War Two.
A ceremony was held on Sunday at the Peace Memorial Park in the city of Itoman, where the final battle was fought. Participants observed a moment of silence.
Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said, "I promise to all the victims of Okinawa that we are determined never to allow the ravages of war to happen again and to strive to achieve a world where everyone can live in happiness and peace."
The battle claimed over 200,000 lives, or roughly one-fourth of Okinawa's civilians.
Okinawa recognizes June 23, 1945 as the final day of organized combat between Japan's now-defunct Imperial military and US-led forces.
An Okinawa-based think tank suggests that the number of Okinawa residents who experienced the war is now less than 10 percent of the prefecture's population.

Russia attacks Ukraine's power grid
Russia's defense ministry said on Saturday that its forces had carried out attacks with missiles and drones on energy facilities in Ukraine, which they say support the country's military industry.
The Ukrainian state-run utility company Ukrenergo confirmed that its facilities in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia and the western region of Lviv were hit.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal revealed that less than one third of the country's thermal power plants remain in proper working condition.
The daily lives of Ukrainian people could be affected further with power shortages.
Meanwhile, US newspaper the Washington Post on Friday quoted Ukrainian officials as saying that being able to fire at Russian territory with US weapons to defend Kharkiv has helped to reduce Russian attacks.
But the Ukrainian officials also said that the United States has "restricted Ukraine to firing less than 100 kilometers" into Russia from the border, and that "prevents Ukraine from hitting key airfields," which are used by Russian jets to strike Ukraine.
Kharkiv has sustained major damage by Russian attacks with glide bombs and other weapons. The mayor says that the city is still under "constant threat."

Japan has highest rate of 'permanently childless' women among OECD members
A report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development shows that Japan has the highest rate of women who bear no children among OECD members.
The report released on Thursday says that among women born in 1975, 28.3 percent in Japan are "permanently childless." Portugal had the lowest rate at 8.9 percent, followed by the United States at 10.3 percent.
The total fertility rate among 38 OECD member countries stood at an average of 1.51 in 2022. Japan's rate was 1.26. The figure represents the number of children a woman bears in her lifetime.
The report says young people's struggles to become financially independent is one of the factors that lead to their choice of not having a child.
The OECD stresses the importance of comprehensive family support to help improve fertility rates.

Young Japanese lack positivity about themselves
A government survey shows that 57 percent of young Japanese people have positive feelings about themselves, a rise of more than 10 points from five years ago.
The score is the lowest among the five countries where the survey was conducted.
Young people in Japan, the United States, France, Germany and Sweden were canvassed.
All of the four western countries had a score above 70 percent. France had the highest at 76 percent.
The online survey was conducted from November to December last year among people aged between 13 to 29. It was first conducted in Japan 2013, and again in 2018.
Only 23 percent of the respondents in Japan replied that their country has a bright future, a decrease of 8 points from five years ago.
Around 50 to 60 percent of the respondents of the other four countries gave a positive reply to the same question.
The Japanese government wants to change the sentiment of young people through improved policies on poverty, education and employment.

Statue symbolizing 'comfort women' appears on Italian island
A statue symbolizing those referred to as wartime comfort women has been unveiled on the Italian island of Sardinia, prompting Japan's embassy to express concerns.
A civic group, which had donated the statue, says the sculpture was erected earlier this month in the town of Stintino, after the town granted permission.
The statue was unveiled on Saturday.
The group says this is the second such statue placed in a public space in Europe, following one in the German capital of Berlin.
Local authorities say the statue commemorates "the victims of atrocities perpetrated during World War Two," and was donated with the intent to raise awareness of women's rights globally.
The Japanese embassy in Italy says it is explaining Japan's stance to various related parties, conveying its strong concerns and asking for appropriate measures to be taken.

Facility opens to share experiences of 2011 quake and tsunami
Residents in a northeastern Japanese town have opened a facility designed to pass on the experiences of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
The new facility opened in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture, on Saturday.
It features more than 200 items related to the disaster and future preventive efforts. The items include photographs taken by residents right after the quake struck, and those showing the changes in the townscapes as reconstruction proceeds. The town's hazard map is also displayed.
A group of residents and reconstruction experts organized the project to renovate an old building as a private facility to house the exhibits.
They plan to use the space as a venue for disaster prevention drills and a place where residents can meet and chat.
The head of the group, Kurahori Yasushi, who lost his parents in the 2011 disaster, said he wants to use the facility as a place to remember the disaster and to prepare for a future disaster.
