Lai: Taiwan military's mission is to protect peace in Taiwan Strait

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te says the highest mission of Taiwan's military is to take the heavy responsibility of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Lai was speaking on Sunday at an event at the military academy in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung to mark the school's 100th anniversary.

The academy was founded in China in 1924 by the Kuomintang party. It was relocated to Kaohsiung after the party lost a civil war with the Chinese Communist Party.

In his speech to cadets, Lai said the current army does not belong to any individual or party, but is loyal to Taiwan, the people and democracy.

He called on the cadets to recognize the challenges and the missions of the new era. He said the biggest challenge is that Taiwan is facing the powerful rise of China, which he said regards the annexation of Taiwan and the elimination of the Republic of China as the great revival of China's people.

Lai urged the cadets to firmly protect the military's beliefs, defend the constitutional system of freedom and liberal democracy, and stick to the position that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to each other.

His remark is based on the idea that Taiwan is distinct from China. Lai also referred to this in his inauguration speech in May.

In response, China conducted a large-scale military drill around Taiwan as a show of protest.

Meloni wants stronger ties with Japan especially in security area

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed her intention to further strengthen bilateral relations with Japan.

Meloni was speaking at a news conference on Saturday, as she wrapped up the Group of Seven summit in the southern Italian region of Puglia.

She said Italy will increase its engagement in issues in the Indo-Pacific region. It was one of items high on the agenda at the summit.

She also said Italy wants to further strengthen bilateral relations with Japan, based on an action plan it has signed with Tokyo. She cited security, defense, economic security, and supply chains as initial areas for bilateral cooperation.
The Italian aircraft carrier Cavour will make its first port call in Japan this summer.

Regarding relations with China, Meloni announced a plan to visit China in the coming weeks.

Italy was the sole country among G7 that joined the China's Belt and Road initiative, but it officially informed China last year that it is withdrawing from the initiative.

Meloni maintained China is a key player that Italy wants to continue dialogue with.

Zelenskyy stresses significance of participants at peace summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stressed the significance of a range of countries that have gathered at an international conference to discuss bringing peace to his country.

The summit to discuss a peace plan put forth by Ukraine began on Saturday in the Swiss city of Burgenstock. Delegates from about 100 countries and international organizations are taking part.

National leaders attending the forum include Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, US Vice President Kamala Harris, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Zelenskyy said, "We have managed to avoid one of the most terrible things, namely, the division of the world into opposing blocs."
The participants include nations from what is collectively known as the Global South and have ties with Moscow, but Russia is not taking part.

President Zelenskyy said Ukraine will cooperate with countries attending the summit to compile an action plan that will be communicated to Russian representatives.

He expressed his hope to "fix the real end of the war" at the second peace summit.

US Vice President Harris mentioned the proposal put forward on Friday by Russian President Vladimir Putin, including his conditions to start peace talks.

Harris said, "He is not calling for negotiations, he is calling for surrender."

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said serious negotiations will require "difficult compromise" and that Russia's participation in a credible process is necessary to achieve peace.

UK, France, Germany condemn Iran's plan to install new centrifuges

The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have issued a joint statement condemning Iran's plan to further expand its nuclear program.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported to its members on Thursday that Iran had informed the agency of its plans to install more centrifuges in the Natanz and Fordow sites in the country's central region.

The IAEA says that it verified at the Fordow plant that the installation of the centrifuges had begun.

The three countries said in the statement on Saturday that Iran's steps "will further increase Iran's enriched uranium stockpile and enrichment capacity, which already significantly exceed JCPoA limits."

The JCPoA is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed with Iran in 2015.

They said "This decision is a further escalation of Iran's nuclear program."

The IAEA's Board of Governors adopted a resolution on June 5 that calls on Iran to provide sufficient cooperation with its investigation into nuclear substances found at undeclared sites.

Apparently the latest moves by Iran are part of its strong reaction to the resolution.

Since May 2018, when the United States unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 agreement, Iran has been producing uranium enriched to up to 60 percent purity. That far exceeds the limit set by the agreement.

Narita Airport operator returns to black after 3 years of loss

The operator of Narita Airport, an international gateway to Tokyo, has posted a profit for the first time in four years. The good showing was helped by the easing of travel restrictions and the yen's depreciation.

Narita International Airport Corporation has released its earnings results for fiscal 2023, which ended in March. Sales increased by over 65 percent year-on-year to 216.9 billion yen, or nearly 1.38 billion dollars.

The company reported 10 billion yen or 63.5 million dollars in net income. In fiscal 2020, it logged its first loss since it was privatized.

The easing of the COVID restrictions in Japan in 2022 and the historic weakening of the yen in the previous fiscal year helped dramatic recovery of tourist numbers from overseas. The total number of travelers grew by 70 percent to 35.25 million a year.

The president of the operating company, Tamura Akihiko, said the number of take-offs and landings at the airport and the number of air travelers are expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels this fiscal year.

He said the company will secure enough manpower and boost the functionality of the airport.
